The survivability is supposed to come through being able to constantly spam Iron Skin, holding prophet for oh shit moments and just nuking your way through with huge damage - or did I miss something cause its works fine for me.
The weapon and shield is just the weapon requirement of the "set" - you still need to gear yourself appropriately to do good damage.
Its like flipping a switch between tank to dps then clicking the tickbox that says Ranged. If your damage is low is because your gear and skill choices arent tuned correctly.
The advantage is straight up simple, you no longer need Wrath. Left Click throw Pinball Shield and Right Click summon 4 archers. Your 4 buttons is just there as dps cooldowns, extra crit damage, increased attack speed, orbital laser strike to speed up that boss kill.
Single target got buffed significantly last patch is by far not a problem anymore.
srsly, ive played the wiz since launch and there is 1 lesson to learn. Get vitality.
you are going to be in melee alot, some of your abilities are even focused on melee range - but you are squishy.
yes you can turn on invincibility, rune 20% dam reduction etc etc but in the end you need to live long enough for the big bads to die so you can health globe to the next group of mobs.
after you got the basic hp problem down, then do what the hell you like.
