For stats it really depends on your class. As a monk I went high up in vit or nightmare and hell, but when I got a godly weapon, I started trading off tons of vit for dex, and just use skills to survive. In inferno with self buffs I hit around 24k dps, and sit on around 40k hp, with no problems from mobs (besides the elite packs no one wants to touch). Mobs hit for around 15k, but with every skill healing, and lots of crowd control it's not a problem.
I know the feeling, im done with act 4 in hell now, and near death experience saved me 6 times so far.

Only 6? Just wait till inferno with these laggy servers, used it more in inferno than everything before combined, and usually to the stupid zombies at the gate when it lags.
