Enemies get 75% stronger per player, so if everyone is equally skilled the game will generally be easier with more players. There is no other benefit to grouping.
There is only a brief time when the game is new and fresh, everyone is on equal footing, you need to think about what works best instead of just copying a build/strategy from a website, there aren't any geared 60's to rush you through content, you can't overgear the content after a quick trip to the AH...
And even if the RMAH isn't your goal, it can make the game more exciting knowing you might be one of the first to get a rare drop and be able to turn it into a little cash before everyone catches up and prices crash.
Why waste this limited opportunity piddling around talking to every useless NPC? They aren't going anywhere...
