It should also be noted that Blizzard says that they don't "add more features" during a beta, but they often have features being developed internally that haven't yet pushed out to beta testers. An example is the Heart of the Swarm leveling system that was "added" during the beta: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/7681240/

Here's a bucket of cold water:

Blizzard has a certain amount of money they want to spend on RoS, and a certain timeframe they want to ship it by. That's how project management works. This is an awesome idea, but (assuming they're not already working on something like it), it would cost millions and delay release by months. At the risk of uttering heresy, I've no doubt that Blizzard has ideas board has stories every bit as cool as this one, and more besides, but some point they have to stop burning time and money and get the product ready for release.

But if we lobby hard enough, maybe they'll add it post-release.
I think this is more of a "Diablo 3: the future" kind of post. There will come a time when expansions for D3 will be done (I'm guessing they do 2), and the team will slim down to focus on features like are shown in this thread.

All this talk about SoJs and the recent ladder reset made me reinstall D2.

    I blame you guys ! :P

I also tried it some time ago but it hurt my eyes so badly I didn't even reach the Den of Evil. Blizzard really should consider releasing a HD pack for Diablo 2. Widescreen support for 1920/1080 resolution at least. Hell, I'd even pay for that some money.

As for the OP: I'm also playing PoE now and I am having a lot of fun. I'm still leveling my first char so I can't really say anything about the end-game, but the whole currency/passive tree/skill gems system gives so many opportunities for character building that's it's almost breathtaking.

I'm no tech whiz, but I'm pretty sure making an HD version of a 10+ year old game with sprite graphics would be impossible. Someone with the knowledge feel free to call me out on that.

They still update it so I'm sure it's doable. They would have the go the route of AoE HD and re-do a bunch of assets.

There's a lot of good stuff in there, and it's great to see an indie dev staking a claim in a fairly tough genre, but there's stuff in there that feels like it's only there to pander to people who want to feel hardcore. Maybe GGG needs to spend less time trying to be 'Not Diablo' and more time just making the game more fun.... /shrug

This is basically how I felt about it, especially the "pandering to hardcore" aspect. There are just a lot of hidden poison pills thrown in that you figure out until they bite you in the ass or you look them up because they feel weird (leveling up individual skills gems was one for me). It's just a lot of stuff. I get a lot of fun out of it, but I have a PoE wiki open most of the time so I don't get stuck in any of the pot-holes.

Thing is, if there's a gold wipe of the entire community, I lose more than just 20 or 40 bucks on gold...my TIME gets taken away and made a complete waste.

It sounds like you didn't have fun during that time, and were just making an investment. That's what you're saying when you state that "[it would be] made a complete waste". If you had fun, it wasn't a waste; if you didn't have fun, then that begs the question: why were you playing?

Agreed. This is usually my response when people worry about "losing" hardcore characters. It's about the journey..

    posted a message on Rifts...
The issue that I see with rewarding players for going deep into a rift is that the difficulties of rifts vary wildly due to randomization. This is likely why the current system is the same across all rifts.

    (Pulling numbers here)
If you spawned a 10 level rift and you spawn the guardian on the 5th level, you now have to go 5 more levels (but you don't know that yet). Then the next time you spawn a guardian on the 5th level of a 5 level rift. So the same reward for a dungeon twice as big.

To counter, you might suggest scaling: deeper rift, longer to activate the guardian. Then you would need a scaling reward. If it's based on rift depth, maybe a deep rift is full of an easy combination, but a shorter rift rolls something really difficult. What if a player keep spawning short rifts for mediocre rewards? They may be discouraged and just never bother with them again.

Adding incentives for rifts (or others gimmicks) is a great idea, there are just many aspects in play here. The feature has a ton of room for expansion which makes it very exciting and gets the game mechanic brain juices flowing!

Theoretically, at least. Of course, after a few hundred hours, you'll never need to pick up a rare again, which is sad. :(

This perspective is so interesting to me because I feel like after a few hundred hours of play, I've earned being decked out in Legendary items.

I mean, there's got to be a top-end somewhere, and that top-end has to be Legendary, otherwise Legendary isn't the top tier in the game and people call them lame.

I guess there's just a fine line for when the need of something becomes obsolete... However, even things like whites still have more value in comparison to rares imo. A white is still needed at level 70 even though it's the least valuable type of item. I think that at end game, White, Blue, and Rare items should all still have their values, but respective to their power.

I think his point (correct me if I'm wrong) is more that after you play the game for 100 hours, maybe it's unreasonable to expect that rares are still a viable source for regular upgrades.

From what I've seen so far I'm not very impressed. The game does have a console feel to it which I don't like. It's strange to see Blizzard go for a console experience when PC style games are doing better than ever, talk about strange timing. Blizzard made their name by providing great online gaming experiences, now they seem to abandon that. Doesn't make much sense to me.

PC games are doing better than ever because they embrace session gameplay more than ever. Diablo 3 isn't any different. They want to make a short (1-2 hour) play session rewarding.

Make the game great for 1-2 hour is fine but you can still have the mechanics and min max for the players who want more they are not mutually exclusive.

Also somebody said you that we can still min max in ros, not so with out trading.

Rift runs etc I hoped would have "diffrent" things inside like cold immune, extra fast, x10 mobs or what ever, having diffrent monsters spawn is nice but when playing it's still much of a muchness. Also going to random maps great but it's still a basic thing that should be in at version one.

Lack of details unfortunaely seems to be everywhere right now tv, movies, games even jobs are making everyhing out to be super complicated when there not.
You can still min/max. Just not as quickly as you could before. Min/max means getting the most out of what you have and tweaking as you go along with max efficiency and best gear in every slot the end goal.

You are underrating rifts a bit. There can be some really crazy and unexpected combinations in there (combinations of mobs, mob affixes, environments) that make it complicated enough without needing anything extra.

posted a message on The casual player of D3
You have a paragon 60 character and have played for "hundred[s] of hours". You are not a casual player. That's not a put down, you are just underrating your play a bit.

Edit: Discussing who and who is not casual is a deep hole of forum discussion that has been around since the early days of WoW. If I had to guess based on those experiences, I would put the casual player as someone who plays a couple hours a week (at most) and has dabbled in Hell difficulty, Inferno if you are really really stretching the definition.

Things like Adventure Mode that provide goals/rewards for session gameplay (an hour-ish at most) is perfect for this crowd.

posted a message on Friends & Family Beta Test Hotfixes
They are experimenting with the bounty/rift reward balance. It's a beta, and it's safe to say that the rewards for these will be changing a lot over time based on feedback and data collected from testers.

Giving a greater reward for a rift is a solid plan. Completing all 5 bounties still gives a big cache, and it wouldn't surprise me if the small caches made a return in a "less rewarding" state in a later patch.
