Update: August 20th - Are you ready for 1.0.4?
After getting my hands on Adobe Premiere, here I unveil the next instalment. Enjoy while waiting for this week's (hopefully 1.0.4) maintenance!

You may have seen the multiboxers in MMOs,
You may have seen the quadriple monk or the triple wizard,
You may have not liked them, because they are really playing the same character with 4x the power and 4x the loot.
All the more power to them - after all they have invested a lot of time and money to play the way they do, and how they do it is their business.
You may believe that even if Blizzard does not have active policy on those kinds of players, they give multiboxing a bad name.
This is for you.

3. Advantages
3.1 - Promoting Build Diversity
There are some builds which are difficult to use solo, either because they lack the survival skills, or because the DPS skills lack the versatility to deal with all elite combinations. Here are some examples of combinations which I really enjoy using:
(Update 8/20: Going up to 4 characters means there are so many more options...will post something in 1.0.4!)
<< The Arreat Duo >>

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/barbarian#SXVRkg!beX!cacYcb
The first barb is a sprinter with one thing missing - War Cry, which the second barb covers.
Many sprinters are also limited in their ability to chase act 3 ranged elites, because neither sprint nor WW work. Of course, a sprint build can be done without using WW, but WW is just amazing mobility. Bash is for non-awkward rage generation and superior WotB upkeep compared to Frenzy when chasing. My rune for Battle Rage is based on using a Mighty Weapon...of course using Axes will keep WOTB up even better. And of course, when you are spinning your way through 3 elite packs at a time, Crushing Advance is too good to pass up.
The second barb applies debuffs, carries magic find, and has two %life heals to distract even the deadliest of elites. Mob Rule is handy in allowing sprinter to spin up to speed.
<< Convicted Sharpshooter>>

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#fYajgk!UeZ!ZYacYa
What happens when you combine the biggest burst potential (arguable) in the game, with the biggest % damage increase skill? Explosions.
Here the demon hunter uses a Grenadier/Sharpshooter build, because with Conviction's 48% already, Steady Aim is no longer as attractive. Grenadier allows for a Long Fuse, Long Fuse, wait 0.3, LfB LfB combo. Conviction is popped right before the first LfB lands. Grenadier allows for cheaper trash clearing with LfB. And grenadier also allows for faster Hatred Regen while walking away and throwing Tinkerer into empty space.
The Monk's main role is cyclone strike and conviction (and carrying MF+tanking). The rest is up to personal preference. Note that Pacifism is used instead of STI because the monk does not have any dex, and Pacifism suits the non-perfect left-handed play very well.
3.2 - Cost
Let's face it, Blizzard designed the item system with one thing in mind...longetivity of the item market. The triangle of MF, Survivability and DPS becomes very expensive to obtain when you seek all 3 stats. Even seeking high stats in two of those departments gets costly.
The way I set up my characters allows me to get away with making glass cannons, building cheaper MF, making 3k LoH tanks, etc, in a cost effective way.
Your buddies may not be willing to do non-existent DPS, but my Left Hand has no qualms about that!
3.3 - Misc
Easier Traversing (Especially with one Barb chilling in town while the sprinter scouts), Quick Piggy-back (even if both die)...oh...I forgot to mention double the drops (tho I'm pretty sure one character can farm faster than I can...but can you farm twice as fast? Doubtful)
4 - Disadvantages
- Hard elites in act3-4 are even harder with 2x HP...if you want to zerg them at respawn.
- Repair costs when playing badly.
- No Companions.
5. What you need:
- 2 Physical Computers
- 2 Mice
- Reasonable Ambidexterity
- A Sense of Peripheral Vision
- Practice
