The expansion is basically needed. Most of the end game content that is different from the campaign is unlocked by the expansion. I have convinced a few of my friends to buy the game and they played for 2-3 months before giving up playing it. I will say it is very addicting starting out but if you have no long term goals it can lose interest after that 2 month period of play.
Community is there but not huge or anything. If you have a friend to play with I would recommend just playing with them as the game is a lot of fun with a small group of friends.
The only thing I would say about playing duo starting out is that there are 2 classes for each primary stat and these classes can share gear fairly easily.
Dexterity - Monk and Demon Hunter
Intelligence - Wizard and Witch Doctor
Strength - Barbarian and Crusader
Beyond that I wouldn't worry too much about which classes you play. If you don't enjoy a class, leveling a new character is easy and quick in this game and your friend can power level you pretty quickly if they aren't interested in leveling another character.
These threads never cease to amaze me. When 99.9% of a player's time in a season is spent AFTER lvl 70 why are so many players in a rush to just get to 70? Does it make a difference if build A gets there in 2 hours and build B gets there in 4?
Maybe to give you a new perspective think about it this way. The 1-70 process is the only thing that a player can truly plan out and control before the season starts. After you get to 70, there's no telling what kind of gear you'll have available to you and what option will be the best to take. A lot of people are planners and like to have all their ducks in a row with things they're passionate about.
I haven't played this game since there was an auction house I believe (I came for the pvp and realized it wasn't happening). I now want to start up in the new season but I'm hearing about a ton of things that I don't know about (augments, ubers, etc.). Anyone have any tips on where to go to learn everything I might need to know?

No, they could drop from a monster in normal mode after you unlock them with the 70+ Solo GR.
