Or, they could do what PoE did this league. Make a completely separate ladder for characters that have spent 100% of the time Solo, self found.
This pretty much. Make a toggle when creating a character for Solo, separate ladder, and if you decide to migrate it to standard play you get removed from solo ladders.
No more balance issues.

Honestly I'd be game for any mechanic that gets D3 out of the OP 6 pc set/Rift/Paragon grind it is currently mired in. New zones and Mobs also don't interest me much. History says if they add new maps or mobs, they will likely be on the "skip" list for GR progression.

I think D3 is essentially in maintenance mode. Even the big reveals at Blizzcon were pretty underwhelming.
If you want to play an ARPG game that has changes and growth, I'd suggest either PoE (new leagues with different mechanics every 3 months and a fifth act coming in the middle of the year) or Grim Dawn (released last year, DLC last year, new expansion this year). I think Blizzard just has more franchise that keep bringing in new revenue like WoW, Overwatch, and Hearthstone, so Diablo gets the red headed stepchild treatment since the franchise isn't still bringing in big bucks.

I'm sure the good people at Grinding Gear Games and Crate Entertainment were absolutely delighted at the announcements.

Because I like ARPGs and D3 in its current form with its current loot drop rates and skill system seems impossibly broken.
As far as D3 goes, the only reason I played this season is the tenth stash tab, I seriously doubt I'll play D3 in future seasons. The game as it stands now has about a week or so of fun to it and then it is time for Path of Exile or Grim Dawn or some other game where it is more fun exploring all the build possibilties.

Apparently the game that Brevik was talking about was actually Path of Exile for the Chinese launch
http://poe.qq.com/webplat/info/news_version3/22557/22558/22601/m14525/201610/514677.shtml confirmed by Chris Wilson of Grinding Gear Games https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/581ajq/david_brevik_actually_heading_poe/d8woktz
It kind of makes sense since PoE is more of the spiritual successor to D2 than D3 ever was.

I'd doubt they'd have him post an out and out lie for legal reasons. I could see them working on new IP not in the Diablo universe. Let's face it, if they released a new ARPG that wasn't the Diablo universe, they'd still get a lot of Diablo players to try it out. I don't think people played D3 for the great campaign story /s

I think the similarity comes down to infinitely scaling dungeons. On the one hand, they help because you always have a challenge in front of you, on the downside, the new challenge just looks like the old challenge with more HPs. Also, infinitely scaling dungeons tends to winnow out sets and builds that can't get within a few GRs of another build. It tends to force conformity.
Also, high drop rates tends to mean everyone who pushes hard has fairly similar gear, and the big differences between the top players are paragons and gem levels, and none of that stuff is particularly fun to farm.
So, cookie cutter builds and a lot of rng and grind in the endgame, with all the fun character development happening in the early and mid game. It's not that surprising that people leave. It's pretty much a recipe for burnout.

I'm convinced we play 2 different games. You'd be the first person I ever met who gave a shit about eras in any way, shape or form. Eras and nonseason play in general are pretty much completely irrelevant to everyone I know who plays D3. There is a reason that nonseason play is a complete ghost-town, and it is the lack of frequent DB wipes that seasons bring. Honestly, I could see them going to 6 seasons a year, because why not? The game is so devoid of real content that 2 months is more than enough to do it all. In fact people are often bored with the game after a week or two, so there is nothing wrong with monthly seasons.
ARPG games are about getting stuff. They aren't about having stuff. Seasonal play ends up with everybody having everything and not needing anything and not having any desire to play.

Interns can start new season if there are no code changes, also. It's a pretty trivial process.
I'm pretty sure the start of seasons is the only time you see a lot of people playing D3. You rarely ever see anyone playing nonseason. Start of seasons is the best thing this game has going for it currently.
