They don't change it because why change a winning formula, you may disagree but in my clan I've seen at least a few dozen brand new players in the last few months, that's only english speaking players and one's who have crossed my path in the clan. Blizzard don't release results but to their shareholders which they can't lie to by law, Diablo 3 is one of their biggest money earners.
I notice a lot of people complain because the game has gotten stale but have spent a 1000 hours on the game, of course it's going to get stale. D2 only had one big change during it's 12 year run, nothing else, no 3 mth patches with new items and set buffs.
I just don't get the constant complaints from a select few, is this really the only thing you have in your lives. No other game, no real friends just the desire to complain about something that won't change, you know what they say about the definition of insanity.
A lot is timing your jaunt and using cdr and passive that reduces cd on death of enemy. Helltooth you run around a lot buffing your pets and keeping in the thick of it. Teleporting death, well a lot of that is internet lag.
Most of the nerfs won't make sense to solo players because they're being made because of group play. Solanium was nerfed because a support could keep the damage dealing wizard buffed with resource constantly. Now this nerf is probably made beause a support with enough globe bonus and a large enough pick up radius can circumvent that nerf, for example.
Started out as a monk as planned, was going to change to DH for gift but stayed as monk for my favorite SWK WoL build but RNG knew what I was up to and hit me hard. I was not able to complete an entire build until over p400, just refused to give me crucial pieces of different builds including no ring sets or unity until then, even with Uliana the seasonal monk set I still don't have the fist of az and I'm now heading towards p600.
I've just levelled up a Barb with the ik set so I'll master the set dungeon with him as it is so unbelievably easy and I'm only doing it for the stash tab, but I'm spending all my time on WoL and shenlong's inna/R6.
You recieve the Haedrigs gift on which ever class hits 70 first and I'd rather have Natalya than Uliana but I like playing the monk in the lead up to it (and both use dex as their primary stat). I find once I get the first 2 pieces there is a bit of a lull patch while working my way towards the rest of the set then it is about trying to progress up the GR's towards my ultimate goal of Raiment/Shenlongs.
I'm not in it to race against the clock so I'll bring the monk up to 69, then get the Demon hunter up quick to get that set and then work on my WoL and R6 builds again.
I'll use a gift on a follower wep and put a gem in it (why wouldn't you?) to max out their damage. .
I'll admit I've used a gift on a non ancient that I've used because I just couldn't get an ancient but I found that decision hard let alone one for a follower. If you want to see how much damage they do change your settings to the lowest difficulty (normal), at a lvl 70 with 600 paragons nothing will be able to touch you (they die as soon as they do) and just stand there and let the follower fight trash that you were killing at the beginning of season with a bow that had 11 dps on it.
My other favorite is the blinding sands sword in the enchantress' hands (as she is the only one that can carry a 2 hander). With enough CDR and AS she blinds the RG for half the fight and it spends a lot of time spinning around trying to find me, I don't know how many times the RG has about to lay the big smackdown only to end up blinded at the last moment.
No use trying to add any damage to your follower first of all their output is a fraction of yours and then add the fact you are boosted by set items which add 100's if not 1000's of percent of extra damage to you only so rather than wasting a roll on crit or socket if the weapon has CDR already for example then I will try and roll for AS or vice versa as they are the only real ways to add any kind of function to the follower.
Unity is a must in every build, if you are punching in a melee then spirit guards are good and Le Sol with cyclone strike for other types of offensive options, also try to have about 1700 of each type of resistance.

I love all the stats a SoJ gives but there is just not one build where it is BiS.

Internet latency, FPS. Has happened to me where I have gotten on a roll and then the next day I'm all thumbs.

I stand corrected, although I'd still have to level up my DH to 70
