I think the one thing I find most interesting about this RMAH is how many people are considering the idea of doing something like this as opposed to doing something actually productive as a means of actual income.

I'm not much of a gamer to the point that I'd be willing to play D3 for hours so that I can live on a sustainent income. It just sounds massively lonely and boring.

Inappropriate or doesn't fit? Christ was never in Sanctuary. So I can see why there would never be any crucifixes.

Crosses could be different though. It was originally used for a kind of execution and torture before Christianity hijacked it.

I can sort of see that to an extent and it's the most reasonable excuse.

I'm sure that they can have ways of making something look "satanic" without having to use pentagrams. I mean, they ARE fighting Hell. Let's not mince words or even realms here. Hell is Hell. Heaven is Heaven.

    Athene_Wins,

If you want to get the numbers right and actually accuse Jesus of wrongdoings correctly, you have to blame Yehwey, NOT Jesus. It is only according to what the bible says in the old testament and in any actions that Yehwey did throughout the bible that you can lay claim that it was technically more murderous than Hitler. Not Jesus.

    Anyway... A retcon? Boulderdash.

Really? I wonder if that's going to stop Id when they create DooM 4. I doubt it.

I don't know, I don't think that kind of excuse holds much water. The music industry has had a plethora of artists who invoked disturbing imagery and yes, they had public outcries, and YES, they're still incredibly and unstoppably successful.

I just find it completely flimsy of an excuse that gaming has somehow gotten somewhere now that it wasn't 10 years ago.

I mean, really? 10 years ago, gaming was just as popular and huge as it is now.

I'm going to call it. Blizzard is being per-emptively cowards on this issue.

The ONLY excuse that I can think of is that they're trying to make Diablo a more child/teen friendly game. That's the ONLY reason that seems to make any coherent sense.

Edit: Or as someone else mentioned, they want the religions in Sanctuary to be their own religions.

I've read off and on that Blizz took out pentagrams and crosses from the game.

    Why? Because of religious sentiments.

Honestly, I don't know about crosses so much. That doesn't really seem to be a constant theme in Diablo from what I remember. But there WERE pentagrams at one time, weren't there?

Was this REALLY a serious problem? I honestly don't remember there being such a huge public outrage and if there wasn't, I don't see a reason for them to consider the inclusion/exclusion of certain imagery from their game now based on what a few people may say.

So if it wasn't such a big deal then, why are they doing it now?

How many of you guys were actually offended about the depiction of pentagrams? Any Wiccans play this game and felt upset that their religious symbol was being misused?

I really just don't get it, honestly.

I really just want to say that... somewhere between diablo 2 and diablo 3, the art style had changed. It's as if there's something missing in the DNA of the design for Diablo 3.

Honestly, this is EXACTLY what I think happened:

You've got an art team that's been working tirelessly on a single ip for probably a decade now and NOW they are telling you to design yet ANOTHER fantasy game. You think some of that artistic influence from WoW wouldn't be apparent in Diablo 3 when the last thing their artists have been working on non-stop has mostly been WoW?

I wouldn't say that WoW's art style has been a direct translation to Diablo 3, but you CAN see its influence.

I'm actually quite surprised that a LOT of what I've seen according to armor and item design has been highly ornamental pieces.

I'd LOVE to see an inferno set of items for the Monk that makes him look like he has just some really badass weathered cloth garments with some kind of wrappings around his fists. It would help me believe that my monk is actually very naturally capable of taking a hit because it really IS his body that he's trained to being so rock hard.

So TECHNICALLY then, stat customization access is dependent as to how much gold you have.

That actually sounds really reasonable because I still don't think gold is going to be really really hard to come by, but there will be plenty of sinks in order to keep gold valuable.

    Quote from Kilvoctu

Because I'm oddly curious, after rereading through your posts, kontan, what would be satisfactory in allowing to feel like you can achieve a carefully planned build without the use of trading or good luck with loots?
First, I figure manual stat point allocation would help. What else?

Edit: Whoa, you just rewrote that whole post (I should have quoted it). Slightly invalidates my question, but still curious, though.

It's probably most that I'm just set in my ways because I'm used to Diablo 2, I kind of expect something a little different, but something that I'm more familiar with than different.

Honestly, I would argue that if stat allocation is out the window and skills are being treated differently, I'd be cool with say... being able to craft gear from the ground up to minimize the dependency of the luck game. We're talking using manual gear creation while also creating a viable gold sink with a dash of luck thrown in. Maybe that's what they plan to do. I'm not sure.

That's all good and fine. I guess I'm just not sure how much of the loot finding system is something I want to rely on.

Yeah, loot was vastly important in Diablo 2, but I sort of always felt that leveling certain skills and using your stat allocation properly was pretty much what makes or breaks a decent build.

I have this impression that even though I can plan ahead of time and try to build my character exactly the way I want, I just feel that I'd have to answer more to a roll of the dice when it comes to item drops.

Honestly, it doesn't sound attractive to me. I'm definitely going to wait until others have actually played it and can explain what's really going on under the hood of the game. To me, right now, it sounds initially frustrating.

Thanks for the clarification, dudes. It was a big help.

    Edit:

Oh, okay. So it does seem like you have at least a good amount of control over character builds BUT there really is a huge luck factor in there as well.

Hmmm... That's going to take some getting used to.

So I looked in the FAQ or that one stickied thread up top to see what we knew so far of what's going on with Diablo 3 and it didn't seem to contain the information I was looking for.

Ok. So I'm a bit at a loss here and I blame most of that from coming into the discussion rather late.

Couple of questions (thanks for your patience):

So there's no actual manual control over stats?

I understand that Diablo 3 is based more on what you find in loot. That loot is the key factor in character customization.

Does this mean that MOST of the character customization process is inherently luck of the draw?

What's this I read about traits? Is that like Feats in Fallout 3?

If I actually want to make a glass cannon wizard, I have to find the appropriate gear and if I can't find that gear, then I'm just going to have to do with what I find as far as a build goes? Let's assume that I'm not interested in trading at all for now.

If that's the case, you COULD theoretically be playing an entire game of chance and not any real and carefully planned build ideas?

I'm asking because what I've heard about character customization is pretty much nothing resembling what I am familiar with as far as Diablo goes and I guess I'm just looking for some clarity.

    Thanks again.
