Mmmm I see. The words enhancements and enchantments are too close and must have confused me. Thanks for the clarification!

runes aren't necessarily drops if they are blank runes that are then turned into alabaster, crimson, golden, etc runes. Since they're changing that system, nothing is set in stone.

keep in mind it's only crafted gear. I don't think crafted gear will be the best of the best. And we don't know how tough rerolling or upgrading the item will be, so it shouldn't make doing runs shorter. Crafted items will probably be the entry level gear for that tier, unless they add in extremely rare crafting materials.

:edit: I may have misheard Jay. There's a chance I'm thinking of upgrading the artisan and not the crafted items. I'm still searching for the source. I'm somewhat confident that I heard him correctly, but I'm second guessing myself.
    ------------------------------------------------------------

When I was listening to Jay talk about crafting, he mentioned that crafting weapons and armor would not necessarily be random because you'd always receive the item at least as good if not better than what you previously had. This is a huge huge huge change that I personally am supportive of, and I was wondering how the rest of the community has responded to this, if they caught it at all. I'll edit this post with the source video unless someone else finds it before me.

    benefits of this new system:
constant progression. less heartbreak. ideal crafted items at least manageable. possibly less reliance on the AH as long as crafted items are close to top tier items.

    downfalls of new system:
randomization is cut down. gold dump/material dump is less extensive. price of crafted items either extremely high or extremely low depending on material accessibility, not volatile.

one question that comes to me from all this is whether or not this applies to runes, if runes are considered "crafted" or something else.

    how 'bout everybody else?

I think Blizz could pull off voice acting... I'm just not sure if I want to see Diablo stand still and talk. I want him killing things, especially me. Also, I don't think the leak saying we kill diablo at the end actually spoils anything. If you've been following the lore of Diablo, there are numerous things that could lead to killing Diablo, but Diablo being a manifestation of something or an amalgamation of the prime evils. We'll just have to see. I don't think we got any sort of spoiler. Maybe it was a bit of a slip of sorts, but I don't think it's too worrisome.

Biggest leak in the development of D3 so far? Or biggest troll? Jay only knows.

    *Spoiler Alert* ;)

"Everyone inside the company can play all the way through and kill Diablo."

My heart actually sagged a little when I heard him say this.

If you play diablo 2 single player then you might experience the play style that d3 seems to be going toward. But online, play revolves around items which grant you the ability to teleport and kill things instantly. D3 is looking to be a much different experience than what most people have had with D2. If you want to know what the game could feel like, play either of the diablo games single player, and then imagine having an online community with you. It's really the only way anymore.

    Also, welcome! :D

posted a message on Runic Revision?
Here's my question. Why would attuning a rune to a skill force a rune to change into a randomly generated type of rune? It's like our character or the artisan has a rune attunement ability but is absolutely horrible at it and can't even get the type correct. If we're going the blank rune route, let us choose the type of rune we want the rune to turn into. Maybe when we take it to an artisan or when our character attempts to slot it into a skill, a box appears with the choices of rune types and the specific rune type's affect on the chosen skill appears on mouseover. The randomly generated stats come after. That way the "insert jay wilson's rune transformation noise" will make a bit more sense.

    ~~ edit ~~

and the rune wipe ability could then work only for the random attributes and not the rune type.

I also feel like there could be the possibility of blank runes dropping, as well as preset runes dropping without random attributes. The only issue that comes from this is the "randomness" in drops. Shamans seem like a monster that would have specific runes, but a zombie type monster would not. There's a small discussion to be had.

posted a message on Shoutouts from Indiana
Hey! I figured I should introduce myself to the forums since I've been reading posts for several months now in preparation for Diablo 3 (keeping up with every tiny piece of news I can possibly get). I've been playing for about 7 years or so, and I'm hoping with the release of D3 I can start getting into the community more. Thanks diablofans for creating a community gathering point on the internet!

Also, I apologize for the blandness of my profile. I hope you can forgive me. ;)

posted a message on Portals Still In?
I have a few points that came to mind regarding the tp's/pots etc.

Potions I feel are a slow regeneration mechanic that is useful in between battles, but too slow for when in the middle of a battle. In combat healing will be done by Orbs. That just seems like how it will work as of right now.

TP's are an interesting mechanic to toy with though. It seems to me that the major problem was that people would high-tail out of battle if it wasn't going well. to solve this they could make you face the boss (either by letting it chase you or confining you to the arena) and then have the TP be a channeled action. It does not need to be interrupted, although that was a good idea. :Thumbs Up: Imagine channeling a spell while fighting Durial. If you are not doing well already you will die before you make it home! This would certainly prevent people from escaping dire situations weather it was a boss battle or just a normal mob. Notably, this does not require a cool-down or arbitrary location restrictions. Add the 'only the caster' idea and it sounds like a great solution.

As for skipping content, I get the impression that they don't like it, but they are not fundamentally against it either. The way to reduce content skipping that I think they will go for is making the content both interesting and rewarding. Remember Bash posted that there was already a separate mechanic for joining allies in the field one-way so, even without TP's, rushing is possible.

agree 100%. There are a few things we need to think about in terms of balancing TP's. Single player and multiplayer games and translating TP's to be relevant for each. In the diablo 2 single player campaign, what was the role of the TP? Selling items and escaping combat, maybe hiring back your mercenary. In diablo 3, TP's will not need to function like this anymore if we are to believe they won't be usable in combat. I don't think escaping combat is necessarily a bad thing, but should not be instant.

As for being restricted to using TP's out of combat, I'm not sure when our character is ever technically out of combat. If TP's are serving a function that aligns itself with the universe, combat persists throughout the entire game. And I refuse to believe that our lovable game designers are trying to find a way to get us out of the action so that we can take a trip to town. No, channeling a portal sounds much more likely, and much more desirable. TP's actually help the game keep its hellishly fast pace.

It's safe to assume we are not going to have tomes for TP's. I just don't see them coming back. We're going to have to change our belief that TP's are scrolls. I'm almost certain they will not be.

    **

Also I wanna give shout outs to the Diablo fight in D2 for attempting to solve the TP problem. If TP's are usable during boss fights, we need to see more of this.
