Considering how popular D3 will be, we can safely assume, for years, you think that you'll ever be alone in your MP game for more than a few minutes at most? You really dig you'll have that follower while you sit in town buying a potion or to help you in your first two kills until someone joins and POOF the follower is gone again? That's going to be a system you're interested in checking out, i.e., you'll feel really invested in keeping your Follower equipped / etc. just for that? Maybe at first because it's new and novel, but after those first few games they're going to feel completely pointless to most players.

I could see myself creating a password protected gamed to do some solo MFing, and thats when I could get some use out of a follower.

I read the posts above, my sentiments apply either way. I'd imagine if someone is on Bnet their primary focus is not sitting in private games forever by themselves. I repeat: whatever manpower was used on such a narrow feature was wasted on this. Cool system, but after maybe the initial playthrough, few people will ever see it again.

Considering you can still use the followers in a MP game when its ONLY you in the game, I can see myself getting some use out of the follower system for sure.

Do Followers feature in PvP or co-op modes?
Followers aren’t in PvP at all, and in cooperative Followers return to town. We found that having four players and four Followers on-screen all at once was pretty chaotic and hard to tell what’s going on. We logic’d out that a player is better than a Follower, they’re better companionship and they’re certainly more effective than a Follower. We figured any player would prefer to have another player, so at that point we decided to have the Follower return to town. You can always get him back later – if the other player leaves the Follower will return.
If you happen to play just by yourself and a friend of yours joins your game then the follower goes back to town.

Awesome, thats good news and something I can deal with. I think I agree that it does get chaotic with so much shit on the screen at once. Thanks for that find!

I think you are misunderstanding how this works (or maybe it's me, in that case i agree with you). As i understood it you will have mercenary whenever you are in the game alone. In case someone joins game mercenary despawns, when they leave mercenary comes again.

    From an interview found here,

Gameplanet: Will followers be used in multiplayer at all?
Boyarsky: No, they’re purely for singleplayer

Anyone else think its lame, sad, and disappointing that followers will only be available in single player mode? I personally played very very little single player in D2. I know the argument is, "You dont need a follower if you play MP, you'll have friends playing with you". I disagree, there have been many times that I've played MP alone, simply doing Diablo and Baal runs MFing. Then someone might argue that you should just play SP then. I disagree again, theres times when I do want to play alone or cant find anyone to play with and DONT want to load up a SP character. I feel like there are ways to allow followers in MP, maybe increase the difficulty of the game for each follower thats tagging along or something?

    UPDATE:

This really clears things up a bit, thanks Doomscream:

Hey guys, just thought I would do a simple introduction. My names Cody and I've been a Diablo fan since it was around, I've been on a super long break from D2 playing other games such as TF2, WoW, and QuakeLive. I'm beyond excited about D3 and cant wait for its release, pretty much nothing else will mater when this game comes out. I live down in Georgia and I'm a Software Engineer that just graduated with my B.S. I look forward to being apart of this community!
