Mar 27, 2011Juystafan posted a message on How will set items work?Scalable Set items: This would be a pretty bad idea... I think... Mainly because this could dissuade people from trying new gear. Of course that all depends on the stats of the set items. If set items are to be scaled with character level, they should be scaled back at the very least, 1-2 tier levels so that drops during the game always have the potential of being better suited than that a particular set items attributes. I prefer the creativity be left to the players for determining the right attributes to have on equipment rather than them be pre-seleced for an entire armor/weapon set. It does too much work for the player. Hence my quote, "Set items are for lazy players, or players that are trying to get some laughs".Posted in: News
Digression:
The common, magical, rare, unique, and crafted gear in Diablo 2 was a fairly nice, simple at that. However, I like the idea of having a very few amount of rare items that have the potential to be better than some of the best Unique items. If that makes any sense. Like magical items, rare items can have varying attributes with varying additions like 20-35% block rate, or +70-150% damage. If a certain tiered rare was to be perfect, it should outshine most perfect unique items of that same tier. I understand I may be pretty vague, but thats the best way I can currently explain it using old d2 terminology. Call it an ultra-rare if you will... Because rare items have far more variations in types of attributes, the odds of landing a perfect rare with not only all the attributes you want but also perfect stats on those attributes, (i.e. 150% if the range was 70%-150%) is far more improbable than that of Uniques items with set attributes and varying stats. (By attributes I mean +Dexterity, or Item casts blizzard 5% chance on hit, or + life, etc.) (By stats i mean the %'s and numbers reflecting those attributes, like 10 dexterity, or the given %). I believe that because it is so improbable that a rare may outshine a Unique item, that Unique items will still play a primary role in the trading system. But my thought on rare's would allow for an additional, very improbable level of slight improvement from perfect unique items. I may try to work out a model using d2 items as a basis for comparison to show everyone if there is enough interest.
Back on topic: Anyways back to the question, I like set items, I do... but they take away from a lot of the mystery. Diablo 2 did practically make set items irrelevant in the end, which I liked. As a result, i believe it should be implemented in a similar way. I think sets should be treated more as a gimmick than an actually usable item to a certain degree(We wouldn't want to make them completely useless). Its stuff for fun, and I can't say no to variety. I think Diablo 2 had it about right.
Ohh and I say Nay to craftable sets..., unless they are purely gimmick or decorative items with no actual use. Then it would just be a fun economy dump.

koryman101 brings up good points. I suspect that the type of end game content that becomes available in the future will be similar to Inferno with respect to the whole grinding and % chance random drops with lower rates of kill aspects. Thus renewing the play value for the game. I hope that pandemonium/infinate mob like events will pop up, and based on the progress you make in each attempt, you have a % chance to get a packaged mystery item that may hold a inferno like quality of gear.
I digress, Inferno is meant to challenge players the way Diablo 2 never could by extending the level of the monsters beyond our own. Inferno is also promoting teamwork to get through it. In diablo 2, you never really needed a team to get through the content. (I remember doing solo Baal runs with the paladin and sorceress). Inferno makes it so that even people who have Inferno type quality of gear will still have trouble with the difficulty and will need help to go through it. By forcing this upon players, not only is the rate of kills decreased but you also must have 4 players to get through it in any reasonable amount of time.
Cheers for the good debate,

Yeah, those rich boys may end up making the game better for us assuming blizzard reinvests that money into the game. I'm all for that because if more content is added to the game... most of the stuff they bought becomes useless anyway and they have to keep buying. Rinse, and repeat. The result: Better game for us.
PS: Other than PVP the only other reason I can think why people hate bought players, is because of the chance they may play a game with said bought player. That bought player may get more kills... which is fine... but one of the satisfying elements of the game is killing. If said bought player has all the kills or most of them... what fun is there for the other players? They sit around most of the time unsatisfied. Of course, at that point they can just leave the game :). I have friends I'll be playing the game with and if they are not online ill try make more friends whom I know don't buy gear. Just make friends in game and play with them.
The advantage of having four players also makes it more unlikely to come across a bought player.
I throw the word bought player around all the time... the truth is... the gear has been found and is floating around in the game no matter what. The only difference is... instead of it being stored in a chest, its most likely to be worn now. The frequency of high level items in the game won't change. The AH takes those stored items and brings them into the light. So don't blame buyers, its not like they are buying the item out of thin air... it has to be found first and then bought. The only thing that's hated is how egotistical those players can get... which I agree can be annoying. But I like to believe some players are more down to earth and understand what they are doing when they buy an item. They rationalize the time and effort spent into looking for items that they never find into finally buying the items.
Nothing wrong with that.

Inferno items will be sold.
Here is why they might buy at all...
I will mention that Inferno difficulty will most likely require the best gear from hell to even stand a chance in inferno. People may choose to buy gear from Hell just so they can play inferno and get the rarer gear and not have to pay the higher price for it. I forsee gear from Inferno being extremely rare and pricey... despite the stated increase in rare drops %. The rarest of the rare will still be very hard to get in inferno. I have expectations for how rare the drops will be. I expect them to be very rare despite it being more difficult primarily because the kill rate will be soooo.... much lower.

Good thought. A log would be nice, or something that just pops up and then blurs away 2 seconds later. I don't want it to flood my screen though. If it had its own separate tab we could click over to that would be great. I don't know the answer though.

No not in the beginning anyway. When D2 was first played it took much longer than that because everyone was unfamiliar with game. However, given time... people will find runs to do and people will be power leveled. At that point it would probably take the equivalent amount of time to get to 60 in D3 as it did to 75 in D2. Give the game a month at least, and you will see those runs.

Easier? No... Will it take less time? Perhaps... But I think 85 is about right. No bets though lol

I agree on some level with what you said. The reason multi-faceted classes came around was because of how hard it was to find a healer in some MMO's or a tank for that matter. All because without them, the instance could never be run. I feel that is a mistake some MMO's made. I believe tank and healer builds should be thrown out all together and instances reworked to encompass a team of heros that battle it out with out relying on such things like tanks and healers. That is why I love Diablo!!! Sure, you kinda have a tank... but not really... You have to rely on skill and yourself to get by in a battle.
As for respec portion. I think its fine in Diablo 3 because no player has to rely on a tank or healer to play the game. So respecing should not be a problem for you.
