Sooooo.... It sounds like there are 5 different runestones and that's it. No tiers of runes? No more minor or major runes?

Oh well. I guess 700 is enough :)
I guess better types of the same rune will just enhance the effect.
E.g. Minor rune of multiplication in lightning skill --> chain lightning hits one extra target.
Greater rune of multiplication in lightning skill --> chain lightning hits five targets.

I don't know whether a better rune would also increase the damage though, maybe you need to increase the skill level for that. Or maybe it's the other way around, that skill level enhances the effects and better runes grant more damage. Or a mixture of both.

posted a message on Want Horde Mode in Diablo 3!
    Quote from ScyberDragon

I think he meant that Diablo itself is already basically horde mode. Monsters get harder and harder as you hack and slash your way trough him. How would horde mode being any different than the regular game?
Yup, that's what I meant. It would be just like the regular game, only stripped of the stuff that makes you want to keep going. The way I envision it, it just wouldn't be very interesting for a diablo game, especially when it's at the end, when you already know all monsters, the sounds they make, their attacks and dying animations by heart.

Now they could make it more interesting, with special item rewards for example, or even achievements, but I just hope they can come up with less repetitive ways to keep us interested..

There would be one big advantage though, it's a good way to see how strong your character is and to keep you motivated to make him stronger, find better items... But if the game is done right, we won't need horde mode for that.

    Quote from claytonsteele

so hard for diablo 3 right now, but those are all just variations if im not mistaken
number of original skills in my head is
    700/5 classes = 140/ 5 runes =28 original skills per class

thats still a butt load, wow!
Yeah, plus, it seems that some runes will really drastically alter certain skills. Also, not every skill can be altered by runes! So the number of original skills per character will actually be much higher.

That might be, but I guess most of the expansion development time will go into level and quest design and balancing issues anyways. Thinking stuff up is probably the least time consuming. Right now an expansion is the least I care about though...

The only problem with this idea seems to me that it won't really offer something new. Diablo means killing loads of (the same) monsters, and after a while you've been there, done that. Horde mode would just isolate that and make it even more obvious that you're just doing the same thing over and over :/

Good article, I like how you use the bits and pieces we have to form something solid.

I'm still hoping for a release before june though, can't wait another year :/
And I guess in theory it's possible, an early 2011 date... By then I'm already well into my second semester at university, it's a huge amount of time!

posted a message on Discussion: The last class is NOT a ranged class
I have to admit I didn't read the entire topic yet, but i'd like to share my thoughts about what I think the fifth class should be. Basically I'm missing two things:

    - An archer (obviously)
    - A knightly class, like the paladin in D2. I'm really missing the "Camelot"- factor in D3 so far.

So my ideal fifth class would be a knightly, medieval ranged character. Can anyone come up with a name for that? A Guardian maybe?

Single parent kids really aren't an exception anymore...

And well science in general, it leaves room for error to allow for progress. It's not dogmatic. So it's not pretentious like "look what we know", it's actually very humble: "this is what we believe right now based on current findings".

But I could easily imagine a situation where you would have to choose if you want to equip a really good item on your character or not, knowing that there are other items which are way more suitable for your particular class and build (and those items are really hard to obtain so you might never get them!). Tat just seems really annoying to me, I want to be able to use the item as long as I want until I find the item(s) I'm actually looking for, and then transfer my first item to another character. I really think BoE to characters will in practice cause way more frustration than anything else.

posted a message on I'm gonna have an operation
You get used to it really.. it's been many years I've been living like this. I don't remember what it's like to be able to breathe through both nostrils, but most of the time I don't even notice. At night I mostly end up breathing though my mouth. But it's something you learn to live with, I regularly do sports without any problems etc.. you get used to everything, and besides, there are much worse things ;)

But can you explain me what would be the added value of that?

Imagine the following scenario: my barb finds an awesome sword, so I decide to bind it on him. A bit later, however, I find this two handed axe which actually makes him even better. Obviously I want to use the axe, which will render the sword useless, while I might have another character sitting around who could use the sword... Wouldn't that just be extremely frustrating? It's nothing you can plan or foresee. I just don't see the advantage...

BoE has the disadvantage that your character is kinda stuck with the item though. IF they decide to implement some form of binding (which I really hope they won't) maybe a mix between BoE and bind on account would be the best: whenever you decide to use one of the items they want to take out of the economy, you cannot trade it anymore to other players, but you can send it to your other chars. Kind of a trade block for high end second hand items. I sincerely hope they find a better way though, I hate the idea of any form of item binding..

The beauty of the scientific theory is that it allows plenty of room for error. When one explanation for a theory (= a fact when most scientists accept it) appears to be wrong, a new theory can take its place. That's how progress is made.

posted a message on Binding Gear
I haven't read the entire thread, so I'm sorry if this was mentioned before, but here goes...

All this time people think about binding to a character, but why not bind certain items to an account? This would offer benefits for economic stability (certain items get filtered out, it could even be on pickup if for some reason they wouldn't want that item to end up in the economy at all). At the same time, it would have less drawbacks than binding to a char: you still have the freedom to test the item on your other chars. I can imagine, for example, that there are certain rings which could be useful for several classes.

Also, the discussion about account trading seems a bit beside the point. If certain people have a desire (and a budget) to buy stuff in the game to save time and effort for themselves, they will do so in whatever way possible, and there will be others finding a way to make a living out of that. For me it doesn't make a difference, as long as a person did the effort, not some kind of bot of course.

posted a message on I'm gonna have an operation
    Quote from -Mephisto

I don't think my case is severe. I mean, I can breath through both nostrils, but I can breath better in my right one, y'know? That, couple with allergies, fucked me over. The doctor said that the nasal sprays weren't really working because the delivery was all fucked due to the deviation, and that convinced me to a degree.

I'm gonna take his word for it when it comes to the swelling and pain. Hopefully they'll dose me with morphine, so I wouldn't be able to even give a fuck about anything, nevertheless feel any pain.
Oh I didn't mean to scare you or anything... The operation itself is really nothing to worry about, they make you inhale some gass and you're gone, and next thing you know you're in a different room waking up. It seems like in your case it will be a lot less tricky than mine, so don't worry too much about the swelling. Your nose is a sensitive spot though, so any swelling is quite annoying, but no more than that. And if I remember correctly it was only bothering me the first couple of days..
