posted a message on An interesting idea to fix skill swapping
didn't read the whole thread, since it's been discussed already a bajillion times, so sorry if it's been suggested...

Firstly, I'm going to play with a specific build in mind, and not swap all the time. Like so many people have already said, this helps you "identify" with your character more. or whatever.

    but here:

whenever you remove a skill from the active skill slots, the rune should pop out and go into your inventory (if you have room) or onto the ground. that way, it takes just that little bit longer to change things around. you can still freely experiment, but switching while "in combat" would probably get you killed, as you re-socket your runes to the proper skills. meanwhile, in normal act 1 and 2, when you're not really runed-up yet, you can just experiment easily on the fly as the system is right now in the beta.

but again, whatever. it's about how each person plays, and if you really want to swap skills at all times and destroy any identity your character has, that's absolutely fine with me. i won't be doing that, i don't think it's fun. if you do, then yay. i will still co-op with you, and it affects me none.

Whatever, you don't need to believe anything i say, the point is that it's true regardless, and that i was really talking to DarkMagicc to let him know that despite your expert opinion, 400 bucks is a fine price to pay for a guitar and he was not ripped off, most fenders i've played, even in the LOW price range of 300-500 dollars have sounded and played quite well, better than most, or a lot of other brands in the price range. Though fender acoustics are not my favorite sounding, that's a taste thing, i prefer gibsons and sometimes taylors. The argument you're making, for someone who knows about guitars (the feel and the sound) is like saying "you paid $70 for Diablo 3? Pretty sure you got ripped off, man, you can get Diablo 2 for $40, and it's pretty much the same game. It even has the same barbarian, and the necro is pretty much the witchdoctor, so other than a few bells and whistles, you'll definitely be happier spending less money on Diablo 2 for essentially the same experience."

Anyway, nice guitar at a nice price, dude, you should record some audio clips of you playing it and post them up here.

Hmm, I disagree. Anything around 100Euro (120 somewhat dollar) is good enough for an acoustic guitar.
If you want it to have additional features like an amp or something the price will go up.
And if you want an electric then prices will really shoot up. Well above 500 for a decent one. (Though you still can get simple models

Perhaps you just got (what was that word again, tricked?) when you bought that cheap guitar you are talking about.
My 100euro guitar has fine intonation, it pretty much stays in tune for a long while unless I play crazy songs with it. And even then it only shifts a little bit so retuning takes only 1 min.
I have to admit that at the start it was hard to press the strings, but that is obvious as you need to build a little layer of 'eelt' (you call it callosity right?). But you get it fairly easy and is a must if you play guitar.
It would explain why your first guitars were harder to handle.

Now I must admit on one thing, the quality of the sound is different. Not necessarily lower but the sound is simply different. I can know.

Anyway I'm pretty sure you got tricked, there are a lot of people that make 'fake brand guitars' which are guitars with a price as low as 20 dollar, but then they sell it for 100 or higher and tell you it's good.
Because I'll say it again, my 100 euro guitar what you consider cheap is really good.

Also try online shops for second hand guitars, my friend once got a electric guitar with amps and other accessors for 200euro, when he went to the shop to see how much it was worth: it was well above 1300euro, and the price was down cause it was scratched. (Though chances you are this lucky are low.)

    EDIT:

landromedia, I don't know what models you played on, but I played on multiple models that ranged between 70 euro and 400 euro. The differences weren't all that big once you got past the 150 euro.

dude, i've been playing for over 15 years and i'm a recording engineer and sound designer, and i can tell you that there is a massive difference between a 100 dollar guitar and a 1000 dollar guitar. You might not notice it when you play, but you will definitely notice it on a commercial album. Not all expensive guitars are worth the price you pay, but why do you think guitar companies have been getting away with selling 3000 dollar guitars for the last 50 years? do you think someone might have noticed that a 100 dollar guitar is just as good and the 3000 dollar ones would have stopped selling by now? it's like any other product. The main point here is that DarkMagic was not overcharged for his guitar, and that if you can't tell the difference between a 100 dollar guitar and a 300 or 3000 dollar one, it doesn't mean that these differences don't exist and that other people don't hear and feel them when they're playing.

370 is cheap for a guitar. even if you don't play in a band and aren't planning on doing much but mess around on it at home, and have some friends play it when they drop by, anything under 300 i've ever played would have discouraged me from playing altogether when i was a beginner because the action is higher, the intonation is always messed up, it doesn't stay in tune, it's hard to press the strings down onto the fretboard, the sound isn't good, etc etc. and if you're just starting out, all these things combine to give you a terrible experience, and slow your progress, making you think you're not good or you're not advancing, when in fact if you played a guitar that was a bit better, you'd probably do fine.

anyway, i used to have a fender acoustic years ago, i don't remember the model, it was my dad's old one, but it played very well and sounded decent, and was probably around the same quality as the one you've got there. If the intonation is good on it, it should be a nice little guitar for recording as well.

The stargate movie was ok when i watched it the first time when i was super young, but i thought all the series sucked until stargate universe. You should really give that one a go. If you know what a stargate does, and the basic lore that you can learn in 5 minutes on a wiki, then you're set, and it's a fantastic show, almost as good as the new BSG.

I'll give'r a try again... Any more suggestions if I want to buy new stuff?

For now just see what you can get out of the music man. If there's just a volume control and no "gain" then what you should do is put your guitar volume on full, and play pretty hard with a pick, turning up the volume on the amp until you start to get a decent crunchy tone, then if you roll off the guitar volume a bit and play softer, you'll get clean tones. So just by playing harder, or turning up a little on the guitar you can go from clean to a nice breakup with no extra gear and pedals and whatnot. if you're looking for more dirty tones, the quintessential distortion pedal is the "Big Muff" which i think frusciante uses, and other guys like billy corgan and that era of dudes. The problem you may have with that amp is the wattage. If it's higher than about 7 Watts (which is actually quite loud when you're talking tube circuits, it's a math thing...) then you probably won't be able to get a nice breakup until it's way too loud for bedroom/apartment practice levels. For most classic tube circuits, somewhere around the 12 o'clock position on the volume pot will give you the best compromise between clean and crunchy, depending on your attack on the strings.

Do you have any way to record your amp? SM57 mic and a soundcard with a mic pre-amp in it, for example?

No, the hagstrom doesn't ahve a bigsby but the ibanez does. I have an old Music Man Tube Amp my grandpa gave to me, but i never play it lol.

you should definitely play it. It won't be the top of the line amp or anything, but it will sound closer to the tone you want than you'll ever get with the peavey. I've played many amps, and my favorite sound is still from a 1974 Garnet "Stencil 15" amp that i got in 2003 for $80 at a pawn shop, and which sold brand new in 1974 for around only $125, and was a "budget amp", ie: for shitty beginners only. Oh well, between that and my 1964 Danelectro "budget amp" i can get all kinds of mean and amazing tones.

so yeah, dust off the music man, make sure it has a safety ground on the AC cable, and rock out.

I have the 30 watt peavey vyper amp. As for guitars, I have many... I have a Michael Kelly Valor, an Ibanez (kinda like 335 style except the body is a little thicker and its full hollow body not just semi-hollow, dual humbuckers), Fender Squier, Hagstrom (probably my favorite... which is weird cause i haven't palyed it in seriously forever, I can't even remember exactly what model it is... it's kinda like an SG body style, single coil pickups), and a custom 335 semi hollow body.

I need to sell some of this crap, jeez.

Cool. I love 333s, 335s, and all that "stray cats" semi-hollow stuff. I hope your hagstrom has a bigsby...
Anyway, your weak link is DEFINITELY the peavey vyper. If you're doing anything other than Industrial/electronic type music, or new metal, you absolutely need a tube amp. especially for clean tones, and small amounts of overdrive tones, but even for the really heavy shit. Digital distortion doesn't react the same way as tube breakup, and even the closest modeling isn't close enough. And this isn't a "vintage is better" or "analog is better" thing, just that tubes have a sound, and they play a big part in the sound you're looking for.

That's a 50s re-issue strat, not an actual 50s strat. I'm sure it plays well and everything, and is probably a nice guitar in its own right, and while i'm sure it feels and plays similar to the real thing, it's not the same as a 50s strat.

basically 50s and 60s strats and 60s/70s marshall tube heads. You will pay huge money for any of these items, about $3000 for a silver jubilee would be a great deal, and a 60s strat in good condition could run you $5000+
