You guys act like all Hell has broken loose. Pun intended.
But seriously, you could argue that it was a "massive waste of dev time" as Magistrate and the some people on the bnet forums put it, but that's only true for those people who either won't be using the system or those who plan on playing with friends at the get-go. For all the rest of us, it's not a waste of dev time. We want something interesting to happen when we play through the second, third, and fourth time. One of the most boring parts of playing D2 right now is starting a character. It's pretty much the same each time. Now with this system there seems to be a bit more variety to the early game.
Also, n00bs will be very happy to hear that they can still play the "single player" version and not get hammered when they forget to just keep right-clicking.
Personally I think it's silly not to have the followers to only be available to you via Normal difficulty. Or, however it's implemented, I think the Followers should also be capable of making it to level 60 with you for any time you want to play single player.

Do people ever just get excited about things? I guess I am a casual gamer because I totally do not look at features in an analytical way. I look at something and think about how it will add to the immersion, story or my gameplay experience. I understand what you're saying and I like the Follower system too. However, in a way, it's good to have people be very passionate about something like this because it shows that D3 has a large following, and really, there's nothing wrong with a steadfast opinion.
I do think it's pretty damn strange that you'll be investing your time in building a "side character" only to have he/she be pointless later on though. That being said, it would be REALLY BAD if Followers were like mercs were in D2 because, like Bash said, there's not enough screen real estate for that many players. -

Like Kiserai said earlier, this isn't fanboys vs. haters. We all love Bliz, and we all want this game to come out yesterday. But we're all unique individuals who see the world our own way. Blizzard intentionally speaks in obtuse generalities because they refuse to make any real time commitments until very close to release. Absence of evidence leaves us with guesses and opinions. And as we know, opinions are not fact. Neither is belief for that matter.
The only time I've taken issue in these forums is when people start extrapolating wild fantasies from statements that are intended to avoid external commitments.
Don't criticize people? I consider criticism a good thing. It's not like I said "daul crossbows sucks" or anything -

The fact of the matter is that, if to you a "beta announcement" means them telling us that there will be a beta, then the beta announcement was ages ago. And didn't they say they wanted the beta to last around 6 months? And their language is unmistakeable: "we're still hoping for a 2011 release"; "still pushing for 2011"; etc, etc. Very vague, very "hopeful".

This is just speculation.
Blizzard would not be doing any "vague or hopeful speculation" when talking to investors, they are serious about their estimations. Furthermore, Blizzard does not want to release any game after Christmas. Doing so would be bad business for any company.

Edit: Jay Wilson was responding to a technical question he doesn't know a whole lot about and he never said that program in particular IS against the TOS. Would you say that overriding the game's Antialiasing is against the ToS? No. And I don't believe that program is either.

Some of that is cool. Some of what makes a Diablo game is the idea (and fact) that you can kind of outsmart the game and break its mechanics. We don't mind if there are some inconsistencies and emergent favorites, we'd rather have tons of customization than boil it all down for the sake of balance. With a purely co-op (and eventually non-competitive PvP environment) we have that luxury. What we don't want to happen, and what we will absolutely work to patch and fix as quickly as possible, are the situations we simply can't predict that could trivialize parts of the game. There could be some build we just didn't create that is super effective against one specific boss in Inferno, and we might want to rein those situations in.
I'm not personally worried about Inferno being too hard. I'm more worried about people focusing too specifically on clearing Inferno, someone beating it too quickly through cheesy tactics or bugs or broken OP builds, and everyone going nuts saying Inferno is clearly too easy (although they themselves will probably still be in Nightmare). People naturally want to focus on a competition of who can beat what first, or speed runs, or other time-based achievements, which is at odds with what the game is really all about (the item hunt).
Everything he said in this post is spot-on. Diablo is not supposed to be the most balance game, it's supposed to be the most fun to play. And then when you've played it to death until your eyes bleed, the item game is what will keep you going for years and years to come.
