Quote fromi liked that idea, but quickly realised that people that skip content do so to get the most efficient drops-per-minute. it's a cool idea to have a random monster have a high drop rate (HDR), but the fact of the matter remains: it's still going to to be more efficient to make multiple boss runs than to kill all monsters, hoping to find that elusive HDR monster. or at least it would be if that's the only change. i hate boss runs, so i hope D3 changes in that respect. instead of boss runs, i'd like to have special areas that i could explore and clear, very random, very hard and very 'loot-full' (like on ES, for those of you that play it).
I think you're right that boss runs will always be popular. At the same time, it would be nice to have some appeal to other areas of the game as well. The balance was way off in D2.

Gotcha. CO to OH is quite a transition.

My wife was the one that convinced me to play WoW. I held a grudge against WoW for a long time after it took so much of the attention away from D2. I'm trying my best to get her excited about D3. So far, so good.
Also, thanks for the warm welcome from everyone!

I've been playing it a lot lately. The Special-Ops missions are fun if you pair up with a buddy. The standard online stuff is fun too. My wife has been playing Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age Origins. She has great things to say about both.

How do they stop it? Well, my guess is as good as anyone's, but I think there's one thing they can do to help a ton: make the content in between bosses more interesting and more relevant. In D2, it was all about boss fights and boss runs. Whether the boss du jour was Diablo, Mephisto, Pindle or Baal, it always seemed like the content in between was completely irrelevant. When that's the case, maphack is going to be immensely popular because the content it allows you to skip is just a barrier to the real meat of the game.
One way to do that would be to assign a high drop rate to a random mob or two within the map. That way, the mf opportunities are spread more evenly throughout the game. For instance, the boss is in a fixed location within the dungeon. The boss has a high drop rate for good items. However, a randomly generated mob or two also has a higher drop rate within the dungeon. If this is the case, a player or a party has the incentive to hunt through the dungeon instead of teleporting past everyone directly to the boss. If the player teleports past everything a maphack is a necessity. If the player has incentive to hack and slash through everything, it isn't as important.

That makes sense. As I understand it, quest items really aren't something you'd equip anyway, so there's no effect on the economy. Likewise, since everyone has the opportunity to get a quest reward, those could be BOP without any adverse effect.

A big issue is map hacks. In D2, you couldn't run a farm bot without some sort of map hack. If you can't map hack, the CD is unnecessary and farm bots can't operate.

Another Ohioan! Any reason you're on USWest?

I gave it up a few years ago. The wife and I play WoW, but it just isn't the same. I need some old fashioned hack and slash goodness!

New poster here. I bought D2 back in the summer/fall of 2000, shortly after it came out. It's hard to believe that it's been almost 10 years since then. I played pretty religiously on USEast from '00-'05ish, and I hope that D3 brings me as much fun as D2 did! I can't wait to meet some of you around here and discuss game strategy as we learn more about the game.
Cheers!
