posted a message on obsession with being unique
I don't understand the amorphous hate against accessibility. If you don't like Diablo 3, then that's fair and fine and you should just say that. But don't start claiming that Diablo 3 was taken in the wrong direction. Systems that Blizzard thought didn't add value to the game were removed or overhauled (skill trees, stat management), and new systems were put in that they think add value (runes, resource management, artisans). But the core gameplay is still there. I'm pretty convinced anyone who thinks Diablo 3 was "dumbed down" to the point it took away from the fun of the game is just generally upset with the game and unable to articulate why.

I have big issues with the game, like the melodramatic dialog (King Leoric is almost evil enough to be comical) and the potential for Diablo 3 to turn into a pay 2 win auction house fest. But the streamlining of core features? How is that conceivably a negative?

posted a message on Leviathan (DiabloDB)
Thanks for making the thread! I want to preface by saying PHP and MySQL are very new to me. I understand common programming techniques quite well so I've been able to learn PHP pretty easily, but handling a relational database has proven to be much more of a struggle than I thought it would be. I may switch to another database language if it becomes too much of a limitation (I don't think it will). I may also explore Perl for more server-side scripting. Javascript is generally a no-brainer, although I want to avoid JS as critical features (some people just don't turn on javascript).

First and foremost, Leviathan is a search engine. Hopefully it will turn into a social search engine. Finding loot (and other things) and comparing it to other loot is my priority right now. This should not take much longer as my db structure is becoming more finalized.

As for what Leviathan can be -- all sorts of things. An armory (place to create builds) is obvious, commenting on items/player profiles/builds/etc. An engine may be created to determine efficiency of builds (although this is not as much of a priority), as well as calculating total stats/dps depending on gear and skill choice are possible.

So far I am shaky on the design of the site itself - it needs to be compact enough to fit within smaller resolutions, but also versatile enough to handle all sorts of different situations. This site will ultimately service Diablo 3, but I am crafting it right now for Diablo 2 since there's actual content I can use.

I want to try and use Google Wave to share work/discussions. It seems like an appropriate place to do this kind of work in, and there are widgets that allow syntax highlighting.

    Google Wave

Account is free, no invite necessary. Just add huckfinnaafb@gmail.com to your contact list. I have various files/work already posted on my waves (basically the equivalent of threads), when I get you on my contact list I'll open them up to you.

As far as people contributing, I can probably find something for everyone to work on in their spare time. If you're proficient with PHP/Perl/MySQL or handling the game files themselves, you can help directly. If you're not good at anything relevantly useful, you can always just tell me I'm fucking up one way or another in regards to design or implementation of features. Ideas help, too.

Uploading computed information to data servers is simply the equivalent of those number of processors in a confined room. Which is what nearly every online company does to crunch numbers.

You are correct that the misfolding of proteins is the cause of many diseases. If you cannot grasp why it is important to discover how exactly these proteins misfold, then perhaps it would be prudent to consider freshmen college biology once more.

In any case, the program is not being forced upon you, and your disregard for the science behind it will not be a cause for concern for anyone.

    The army?
    Seriously?
I'm not going to sound like a fucking hippie now, but being in the army won't do no fucking good to you.
What makes you say the MARINES (not Army) won't do any good for me? How do you know this for a fact?

I fully endorse joining the Marines. I know first hand that, while they are certainly no brighter than army grunts, they are absolutely the most well trained and disciplined of any branch. The physical training, discipline, and experience working as a team will better equip you for basically any field of work (not to mention the bennies).

But be prepared to lay down your life and take life, as well as sign 4 years of your life to the government.
