There are people who can be mature on the internet and accept ideas presented through them. Shitstorms are not the fault of the discussions; they're the fault of the people participating in those discussions. If people are going to bicker, then that's their prerogative; bad apples spoil the bunch.

I've never tried to force an idea. I've always tried to present one. There's an difference between giving the option to have spinach and commanding people to have spinach.

My desire to start another thread isn't because I think good discussions can't happen in the URT; they have in the past. A while ago, people were more engaging and more open to actually talking about stuff because, at the end of the day, exchanging ideas and having conversations about our passions was a good experience as opposed to a chore. We were able to grow stronger as a community because of the knowledge we shared. I can recall times when conversations on the same topic spanned, maybe, five pages or so.

I guess I just want that back. I want a lot of things back; some of the members I used to talk to on here had some brilliant ideas and had interesting things to say. Not to say that there isn't any of that now, but I feel that it's more of a rarity now.

There's simply not enough people who actively participate in this thread to balance the amount of "random" and the amount of discussion. That's a conclusion I've come to simply from looking at pages and the things that are talked about: a lot of stuff and a lot of media. This has led me to believe that it is foolish to go to the URT in search of a good discussion.

Edit: People who feel the need to project the measure of their intellect over the internet are incredibly vain. Again, bad apples spoil the bunch. At least I try to project an earnest demeanor when I want to talk about something that's touchy like abortion or religion. I used to be that way, but then I grew up and stopped being so protective of my ideals. If I'm in public, I don't throw a fit when someone disagrees with me; in fact, most discussions I have in public about politics and the such, depending on the person, are completely cordial and pleasant and, more than anything, I want to project that into things I say on the internet.

People who see the internet as a forum for their vanity probably don't speak that well in public. Being humble in a discussion, more than often, will result in something worth remembering and will probably lead to a higher sense of respect for the people you talk to.

That's what a discussion is to me.

So you went and made the general discussion forum but all in one thread?

Well, my idea was that we need a thread that can be a concentrated venue of intelligent discussion. The General Discussion sub includes stuff like video games (inb4 "you're on a video game forum, dipshit") and almost all the misplaced threads I see get thrown in there and it dilutes the potential of that sub.

In my opinion, it's like the recycle bin of Dfans; full of little threads (some that I have started but die because of the little traffic that runs through that sub) and some gems that get resurrected every once in a while, but are slow even after that. I have tried to start some discussions that I, at least, thought were interesting.

I applaud Don_G for his effort on actually trying to talk about something; this might be the URT, but the way that intelligent discussion gets snubbed is, in my opinion, insulting (not to me, but to everyone who actually wants to chime in on a good subject without people putting up videos and pictures).

I'm not trying to be condescending to anyone; I'm being frank about my expectations for this forum. I don't expect everyone to follow single line in absolute maturity and I expect people to have fun on this forum, but some people find a good discussion on psychology or world events far more interesting than comics and Youtube videos. That's the point I was trying to make.

I'm probably going to leave, pop in occasionally, and come back fully when there's talk of expansions and shit.

But, yeah, gonna be too busy playing D3 and Skyrim to care.

And fuck Gooby. What a stupid meme...

I wouldn't even say that either. If anything, the people run this country... into the fucking ground. Our vote is not only our greatest weapon, but our most unforgiving thorn.

People should really investigate the people they elect into public office. And, if I could be frank, people need to stop treating the Constitution like it's some sacred artifact. People throw around the word "unconstitutional" without having actually read the Constitution. It's like the word "sin" to the hyper religious. The conservatives today are psychotic. The liberals today are pussies.

People don't read enough books. Not enough people have actual sources for their "information" outside of their daily news.

Again, people in a Democracy will get the government they deserve:

That money could've gone to schools. Instead, it's going to companies who definitely don't need it.

He gives humanity a bad name in general >_>

Well, I wouldn't say that. You do have to go pretty far down the Barrel of Shame to find people like him though.

I mean, this is the guy that said that rape victims should give birth to the children of their rapists and, like a coward, hid behind his faith. What better way to shove his religion into something as heartbreaking as rape and say, "well, think of it this way; God has given you the gift of bearing a child, so..."

I doubt that God would want an innocent woman to be raped. If that is part of God's plan, then he must have something really special planned for her after something that horrible.

And, also, this is the guy that said that the separation of Church and State made him "want to throw up." Not only did he not get it, he made himself out to be the victim. Maybe we don't want your crazy interpretation of what is "right" anywhere near our public policy, motherfucker.

American politics is what the American people created for themselves ^^

Aye; in a Democracy, the people will always get the government they deserve.

Maybe people should try to understand what government actually is. There's a huge knowledge gap in America and the media is at the forefront. They cover elections like a horse race, most of the media will only cover a politician's gaffes, and the media has to problem twisting anything to fit a certain ideology.

Not enough people pursue knowledge. Not enough people are content with the possibility of having to simply disagree with themselves. That's the problem with politics today; the stubbornness of both the people and the politicians. I would sooner trust a politician that isn't afraid of an alternative over a politician who insists that their solution is the most feasible.

Americans are hardly civilized in nature; some of us are downright barbaric in our politics. Some of us are arrogant. Some of us are willfully ignorant. Most of all, some of us are afraid because of a lie we heard on the news or a lie that a politician told us. The problem with Democracy is that everybody has a vote and, depending on factors that exist within that nation, they may or may not be educated. The weak-minded and passionate can dilute the effectiveness of the knowledgeable and open-minded.

I definitely prefer the new "style" over the old one.

And if you don't, then go make your own Diablo. Go make your own Gothic ARPG, make everything gray, and remove all the torches. Give your character a candle and a dagger and let Satan rape him.

Yeah, just go do that. I'll be over here playing D3.

posted a message on Can we say Merry Christmas ?
I say "Merry Christmas" because, you know, it's fucking Christmas. I don't think I've ever told anybody to have a "Happy Holiday."

I mean, what's the worse that can happen if you accidentally offend somebody? It's not like you went inside a Mosque or a Synagogue and just screamed, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JESUS CHRIST." Then you'd be at risk of offending. And I highly doubt that anybody is going to get butthurt because you wished them to have a good weekend.

Like, really. If someone said that I offended them because I parted good tidings, I would be offended because they had the gall to turn my words around to make it seem like I had intention to hurt them. I didn't, so anyone who does that is a goddamn asshole.
