I wanted to share the link to the Diablo III book I art directed and designed while I was at Insight Editions. They just put up some more images of the interior. I'm very proud of this book, so go order it now!

    Awesome.

But did you ever finish the Fallen Shaman?

EDIT: That sounded a bit too rough. I'm wondering though :)

    No worries :)

He's still on the backburner, but I have his body about halfdone, I figure he'll be finished up around June, at the rate I'm going with projects.

I'll take some better pics soon, this pic looks more squished than it actually is.

Did you see my posting late last night? :)

Yeah, The Fallen Shaman is the next one I'm doing, then after that, I might take a break from Diablo stuff, until they release some awesome character art from one of the bosses that is. I actually started a Dune Thresher (http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/world/bestiary/dunethresher.xml) but don't know if I'll get around to finishing it up.

I have dreams of finishing up Illidan, but he is so huge, it will cost a lot of $$ to get him cast to a solid statue.

And I started Sindragosa from the Lich King Trailer, http://www.wowwiki.com/Sindragosa, but she is another ambitious sculpt I need a lot of time with.

And don't ask me why, but I really want to make a MindFlayer (http://images.google.com/images?q=mindflayer&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=w1tWSp3iJcOJtgeswNCTBg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1).

I wish Blizzard would stop releasing such great monsters though, let me focus on other stuff :)

Really? I never saw that in the artwork, they always look like toes to me, like here: http://www.diablowiki.net/Image:Unburied_render.jpg

Do you have a picture, I think that would be cool looking, actually

How big are these sculptures? Can you please include a size reference in the photos? :)

Well, the Unburied sculpt is about 10" high with the base, and his arms spread out is 15". That's a lot of resin!

The Shaman's head without his horns is about 2" high from the bottom of the neck to the base of the horn, and around 3" from tip of ear to front of the face.

His body and rock he sits on will be at least 20" tall when done, not including the spear he will hold!

WOW! That looks fantastic so far.
Did you use the same material on the horns as the head?

Originally, I did make the horns with wax, but then I made a mold of them and cast a few in resin which really hardens. I'll do the same with the head, when I'm done detailing it.

The head took around 5 hours to do.

Ok, since you guys all showed much love for the Unburied sculpt I did, I'll give you all a sneak peek at the next guy I started... The Fallen Shaman, pretty much in the exact pose as the concept artwork has it.

So here is his head and horns. I'll save the rest for another day. While this is a work in progress, I'm open for critiques... and yes, I will be adding his piercings, but I'm going to do that after I cast his head in resin, and I'm going to use real metal earrings.

I just wanted to share some fun news with everyone here, you guys were so supportive of the piece here on the forums.

I entered the "Diablo III: Unburied" in the Marin County Fair this year and I won first place! Now, this isn't your regular fair. Oh no... the Creature and Model competition is judged by the guys who formed Industrial Light and Magic (now known as Kerner Optical)!!

    I'm completely floored!

Getting this thing to a state where it was showable was a crazy adventure in itself. I didn't even have time to cast up the tattered clothes he wears. I had to make a base from scratch. Leading up to the submission day, I had bought and studied the ModelMania DVDs to learn airbrushing.I spent 3 hours airbrushing this thing (the first thing I ever painted) the night before I had to submit it. Then, at 3:30 am, I go to put a wash on the guy to bring out all the painting I had done and I STAINED THE WHOLE THING. I just sat and looked at it, realized I had not put a coat of Dullcoate on it at all, and realized I had to keep going. It totally sucked, but there was nothing to do but keep going.

Anyway, here are some pics of the piece. I will be casting another version, after I make molds of the new base I sculpted, and that will have real cloth for the tunic. But I am also molding clothes to be laid over him as well. I want to redo the entire paint job too, add mottling, make his mouth shiny like it is wet, etc.

I'll update pics of the new base and a version of the sculpt with real clothing that I've made grungy.

Hey Guys, thanks a lot for the great response. I was wondering why my little blog got a ton of users, found this forum and wanted to say thanks.

Despite not blogging about it for awhile, I'm about 2 weeks from being done. I completely redid the skulls on the bodies, I have at least another two nights of sculpting the body left, then I've got big plans to make a castle floor base with broken off pillars, if I have the time.

I'm actually carving this in wax, and then making molds of each piece, casting them in resin which hardens to rock solid... I will then assemble a few of these statues and paint with airbrush and regular paintbrushes. These will be actual statues you would put on a shelf. I need to make a few, I'm entering it in a few contests, and I want a few for my portfolio. I may give a few away in a contest as well.

I'll make a huge picture update this weekend, so keep stopping by the site. I may post a teaser of the next one I'm working on, the Shaman Fallen One (http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/world/bestiary/thefallen.xml)
