And Wolven, what you have labeled as 5 in the burnt down Tristram picture is actually part of what you labeled as 2. The only area we have access to in D2 is the area you have labeled as 2. The wall around the area wasn't present in D1, but it was put there in D2 for obvious reasons.
What I labeled as 5 are the walls around the cathedral in d1, and the walls around the burn part in d2. In Diablo 2 we have access to all those areas, except for the places where wirt and Adria were located in d1.

Plus, the cathedral's location in d1 seems to be the same as the black earth in d2.
How can it be the same when it is obvious that in Diablo I, it is the northern most structure in the town, whereas in Diablo II, the black earth, or black ground you speak of is right above Ogden's Tavern, or at least what has left of it, the exact place where the house that indeed was above Ogden's Tavern!
That image of the cathedral being on a hill is from Diablo 3. The cathedral in d1 wasn't on a hill.
It's because the game was in 2D....
Look at both images and you'll see that both the Cathedral (d1) and the black earth (d2) are both to the north of the houses.
And my point is that, both the cathedral and that burnt ground have a big wall with trees behind (the town limits). Also, there's not only one house missing in Diablo 2, there are two, why would they put one and not the other?.
All this plus the fact that the location of that burn ground seems to fit better in reference to where the portal was in d2 and it's place in d1 makes me think that the burnt earth was meant to be the place where the cathedral once was.
I see your point, and it's true that that house could be the burn ground, it's just that there are a few things that make me see that the cathedral was supposed to be gone in D2.
It's not important, I'm just trying to point out what I see: that they forgot that the cathedral wasn't there in d2.
Read it carefuly, don't you think that it makes more sense that they made a tiny mistake?

I know, but the fact that they put it on a hill in that D3 cinematic doesn't change the cathedral's location in d1 or in d2. -

No, it wasn't, we just never saw it! The place you are referring to is where an ordinary house used to be! Check the pics and count the houses and you'll see what I mean! Obviously, the Cathedral had no importance in Diablo II, so they excluded it, along with Adria's Shack and the house that was closest to the Cathedral! Hence the walls!

1- D2 portal, you can see it's the same place in both games
2- Town center, the same in both games
3- Small wall, appears in both games too.
4- That small structure next to the cathedral is in both games.
5- Walls surround the Cathedral in the first game. Walls surround the blackened earth (lol metallica).
There are trees behind the walls that mark the town limits, in both games.
I see what you mean, two houses seem to be gone in Diablo 2, but of those two houses, the big one doesn't have walls around it, and there are no ruins of the other house. Plus, the cathedral's location in d1 seems to be the same as the black earth in d2.
EDIT: I just saw your second post. That image of the cathedral being on a hill is from Diablo 3. The cathedral in d1 wasn't on a hill. -
Mar 3, 2011Wolven posted a message on Fourth Batch of Screenshots and ArtI just checked with that big screenshot that shows all of tristam from d2. Behind the walls you have a lot of trees, but I'm pretty sure that the place with dark earth and a corpse on fire is the cementery from d1.Posted in: News
The city in the back is obviously new tristam, since the old tristam in in front of the Cathedral's entrance, and that town in the back has lights.
EDIT: that place with the black earth is where the cathedral is supposed to be, since it was surrounded by walls too. The cathedral was burnt down in d2. -

In Diablo II players visit only Tristram -- not the Cathedral which lies some distance away. The cathedral is still technically there, but it is blocked by the walls of Tristram. Similar to Adria's shack.
I thought there were just trees behind those walls. -
