Quote fromAnd so Blizzard's downfall begins. Soon they'll be making MMOs like Spore or The Sims, you know games with "broader appeal"
Exactly. IMO, series like Warcraft and Starcraft already have a broad appeal. I can understand Diablo being darker and gritter and therefore having a smaller audience. But geez...

Who knows what WoW is now, I know they have dumbed the shit out of that game. But there was a handful of pretty challenging encounters in end game raiding that had a good amount of strategy when I used to play.

I saved the "es300r" folder from my D2 directory. Is that enough to save my toons and bank, etc?

Strategy is good and all, but this is a hack and slash game, not WoW. I want to be able to mindlessly destroy things with not too much strategy. Leech mechanics allow me to do this without having to stop and juice back up or keep running in and out, etc etc.

I'd say their profitability comes directly from their development process.
It's never a good business concept to attempt to make the consumer pay for your development changes. A game should be priced at it's expected market value and no more. If people knew that Blizz increased the cost of games because they chose to increase their own internal costs, I would assume most people would NOT like that.
Sure I'd like D3 quicker. But a buggy first release is sometimes enough to kill a game entirely, even with fixes coming within a month or two.

I'm pretty sure it can't have sockets in order for Charsi to imbue it.

OP is talking about a minigame for D2.
