I would rather say that HG:L Art direction was the perfect theme for Diablo despite the modern twist of modern gothic.
Hellgate could have been a great game sadly for the poor background.
but no doubt Hellgate: london art direction should had been In Diablo 3 which what the Royal fans love about it mainly the Art theme of it.
Why I was amaze about HG:L because the theme & art direction which caught me playing it.
The author hates HG:L , n at some points i do agree when at times it became too draggy
On HG:L despite the weakness , ill give FULL credit on the the art direction a 5 Star flat out on that!
Diablo 3 hopefully n should be much better unless player can adjust their lighting & theme..

A: It's been in dev for quite a number of years. We had it up at Blizzard North for a couple of years and it's been at Bliz South for a while. Probably about 4 overall. (Blizzard North closed in fall 2005, nearly 3 years before the WWI. It's known that preliminary work began on Diablo 3 back in 2000 and it was well underway by 2002, though almost all the work the Bliz North guys put in was thrown out when the project moved to Irvine and started virtually from scratch.)
I wander how was that work art direction went ... i bet it would had been way more gothic ...;)
