LOL!
Coming from a guy who signed the "Diablo should be darker" internet joke petition #14234
I'll take Blizzards approach on how to get a player immersed in the game.
There is no way I believe you even play other games with such a close-minded nitpicky mind as yourself by the way you ridicule D3 and say you won't play it for anything other than the story because the shoulder pads are a wee too big thanks. You just made my day!Because this is how we remember what “Diablo II” was like as well. This is what we were thinking what “Diablo II” looks like. And then we played through, and we were like this isn’t very fun. And then we started going, “Why was ‘Diablo II’ so much more fun?” And some of the Blizzard North guys [the team that made 'Diablo I' and 'II'] knew why right away. They were like, “Well, because we didn’t make all the areas like this.” And if you think about even the areas they did, the creatures were really bright. Like in the gray and dark dungeons, those are the places that you run into the ghosts who were almost like glowing brightness, and that was so that they would stand out from the backgrounds.
I think one of the things that these lack is if you stuck every one of these re-done shots right next to each other you would not be able to tell that they’re in different areas. One of the things that’s key to “Diablo II” — and I’ve gone through and done timing on it — it changes environments every 15 minutes, and every 45 minutes they give you an environment that looks completely different than one you’ve ever seen before. And when they change environments, the contrast is huge. It’s like I’m in green lush fields, and now I’m in the darkest dungeon you’ve ever seen. I’m in a bright sandy desert, and now I’m in a completely dim mummy tomb. There are these vast shifts in look, and it’s one of the things that keeps people interested in playing the game.
It’s a very simple game, and [you need to ] constantly vary what you throw at the player — big look changes in the environment, creature changes with different behavior. And not just behavior; we spent a lot of time trying to make creatures show up and die more interestingly. Because those are all the things that keep you going. Each one of those things is a reward. When you pull all the color out of the environment and you make it too homogeneous across the game, essentially what you’re doing is you’re pulling away the player’s reward of feeling like they’ve progressed because the area they’re in now looks like the area they were in 30 to 45 minutes ago.
So that’s one of the reasons why we really felt we had to do this. We had to move to an art style that had a lot more variety in it and was capable of a lot more.

Yeah StarCraft and Warhammer 40000 have big pauldrons.
Just plainly ridiculous...
I dont think i can productively discuss with you or anyone else who stands with you after this point.
Wait wait wait...
What makes it ok for those shoulder pads to be huge but the ones in D3 are "a little too big"?
Not realistic? ...neither is D3.
Not in the older games? ....this isn't the older games
Not Exactley your taste? ...ding ding we have a winner. However, TOUGH.
But why? ... because your not making the game. Get over it and quit trying to tell people how to do thier job. The game isn;t even out yet and you haven't seen much of it! I'm sure some shoulder pads will be smaller, some will be larger!
LOL. This is just getting silly. You got told by Jay Wilson Guess what, this is not Diablo 2 with updated graphics. Again, you don;t know how to make Diablo 3 "more Diablo" than the creators themselves. Everyone will have small things they want changed about the game but to complain about things when you realize it's your Personal opinion and closing off the creativity of the creators is just silly. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

No. you gave me negative rep because you thought I insulted you. That's what was in the comment.. and now you're pulling the insult from a different post. Again, grow up and get back on topic instead of taking the thread off course when you're wrong about something.
Either way the game is shaping up fine. I think it's amazing that Blizzard even addressed this lame petition to the gaming press in the first place. I guess it's because so many people jumped the gun on early development of the game that was shown and every kiddo gamer what's to feel like they have a say into how the game is made, weather it be a minor detail as in "I think his feet are too long and he should be taken down a shoe size" for example.
Silent majority is an amazing thing. I hope Blizzard knows almost everyone trusts them to make a great game.

Wow. So you're wrong about something (OMG STOP THE PRESS I KNOW), I explain why... you Agree and yet you think I'm insulting you? Grow up. Never once in that post did I call you a 12 year old, or call you any name for that matter. Where and how did I flame you there? Because I LOL'ed at what you said? It was funny. I guess lesson learned for you? - Don't talk about things and make assumptions about things when you have no clue or insight as to what you are talking about.
Again, I'm sorry you thought I was insulting you with that post, but I hardly consider that flaming lol. Oh, and thanks for that negative rep  Very mature. Don't take offense next time simply because you're wrong. Maybe take it as a time to learn something instead of getting in your head you're being flamed somehow lol.

Yay! Video editing! This is my field!
Well you see Kenzai, you are wrong as usual. He was talking about the dynamic lighting that a game engine creates. That is vastly different than taking a video and throwing a video filter (which is an after product - hence the term POST production in the editing field). I'm sure he knows that the dev team could change the colors to darker hues and shades, he addressed that in a different answer when explaining the art direction that you probably failed to read as well. What he was saying the lighting in the manipulated shots was impossible and improbable to achieve with their video game engine.
Again, I'll take their word for it instead of the kid on the Diablo Fans forums who , again, thinks he can make better games than Blizzard.
So you see, taking video and adding video filters/manipulating colors is just as easy as doing it to a photoshopped picture. It has nothing to do with the same degree of manipulation it would take to code a engine to Produce such things.
Also, He doesn't have to say anything now. If anything these Diablo Devs joke about the online petition you signed over their lunch break.

Actually no. The other thread he talks about art direction, this one he responds directly to those hilarious photoshopped photos people made that think they can make better games than Blizzard

Good read. lol.

as it shows that maybe some people are getting across to you. However, there will Always be things that avid gamers wish were done a little better or a little different. Every game I play I point out things like "I wish they had done this one little animation a little better." but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the game. I do think it's funny though that you talk in such a way that these little 'opinions' of yours seem the be the end all in what would make D3 the ultimate game for everybody lol.
here's the way I view this thread. There's this kid who is really creative and is known around town as being this really good story teller. He has a dream one night about a Pegasus that comes to save a village from all these troubles the village is having. However, as soon as everyone huddles around to hear another great story-
story teller: "My dream all started when the pegasus came from the sky and.."
-a fatkid wearing a shirt with the face of the story teller interupts-
fattie: "pegasus? Don't you mean unicorn?"
story teller: "um, no.. it was a pegasus. I know, it's my dream lololol"
fatkid: "well, i think it should be a unicorn. doesnt everyone else?"
audience: "No. shut up, he hasn't even started. you know his stories are aweosme, they never suck, and take a long time to tell.. so shut up already it's not your story lololol"
fatkid: "omg wtf can't you guys see why it would be better as a unicorn?"
story teller: "well, i've only said one sentence, later on there is a point where the pegasus has to fly away, unicrons can't fly"
fatkid: "Well, that's not true, cause i saw an pic on the internet of a unicorn that had wings"
-as the fatkid keeps crying the audience pushes him to the back of the group-
fatkid: "but but, the pegasus is all white! shouldn't the hooves be brown or something......"
audience member: "um, it's his dream"
(in a faint voice) fatkid: "ok! i changed my opinion but it's better now! it's allowed to be a pegasus! .... but it should should should still have a horn!"

Not really irrelevant when the head of the art direction is literally explaining the decisions behind what you are crying about, as well as explaining that the game does indeed get darker as the game progresses in order to capture to audience more. You guys really jumped the gun by making the petition and seeing hardly any of a game due out years from now. I bet you're a quick one with the ladies as well!
Here we go folks, ANOTHER article of a sit-down with Jay released Today. Let's see what he and the mainstream press of the gaming world think about this!
VIA Destructoid:
I do think it's funny how things change though. What used to be a call for all around darker dungeon, more "GOTH", (LOL) and more "Diablo 2" has turned into n argument over green lamps in the dungeon.
The petition is done. It never mattered. We have not even seen much of the game and as Creepsville said, the petition is being looked at as on the same level as a bad fart joke. I'll trust Blizzard with the game they are making rather than the opinions of the kiddos who have seen 1 early on dungeon. There's no arguing here, no proving someone wrong at this point. It's all opinion.

No, I didn't. I said that there is a white light that comes off of any candle or torch no matter what color you put it up next to as long as it's very close to it. Then someone posted a picture of a bonfire...
I replied with the picture of the hand to show that the closest part of the hand was illuminated white (the peach color of that part of the hand has lost it's color, similar to the greens in the dungeon that are up next to candles and flames).
Really, drop it already, you misunderstood me because you didn't care to read what I wrote.
LOL. This is freakin hilarious!

ROFL. You're really grabbing staws here. However, this fails in one certain area - it's not what I was even talking about. I was talking about why the greens are not so strong and concentrated in color by the candles and why the green fades around your character as you walk through the environment.
0
I should have known that instead of trying what I said, or even actually thinking about what I said you were going to something dumb like this. Those people are not close to the fire at all. Why? It's a bon fire lol. You didn;t even try what I said or even think about it. Take a candle, lighter, flashlight, whatever. Hold it close, it drowns the color.
see...
There is white in there at the closest point. I was trying to show a real world example of how this works and why the areas by the candle and your player dim out of green as your player moves or when candles or other sources of light are present. I just thought you might learn something, but as it shows you are so close minded and already know before reading a post that you will be arguing any point, no matter how illiogical or idiotic you may come across. grats, you prevailed once again!
Either way, lets get back to the petition-
Dont you guys think taht after reading the interview from today, among other things that you prematurely jumped the gun screaming for changes! I know.. i know.. it made you look kind of silly and as showing you put your foot in your mouths in terms of only seeing the early content of the game...

Take out a flashlight or if you have a huge candle that will do as well. Now get the flashlight, or flame close to any surface you want, any color doesn't matter. It will turn white, and the color will fade.
Moving on:
For those that didn't read the interview I posted go do it. It's good and it will stop all your hesitations to try and tell Blizzard how to make their own games...
Heres the kicker for you close-minded whiners that think goth = pitch black dark... we haven't seen much of the game...
from the interview, today;
"The preliminary art we've seen so far, Wilson said, is from early on in the game. "We want to generate the feeling of everything getting worse... it's part of our narrative. It makes the more gloomy part of the game a place where the stakes get higher."
