I have to agree, achievements like that are the retarded kind of achievements. First, I think they are just a fake way of adding life to the game. But what the hell, its not so bad when there are good objectives to do. Sometimes, they are enjoyable even for me.

But stuff like that, "kill a million monster", "have 1000 hours of play time on one character", are just stupid. You can't do anything to get to them except waste your life on the game.

I have to disagree with you on a few points. First, I personally don't think achievements are "fake" ways of adding life to games. They demonstrate that you know the game well enough and are good enough to do certain things that other people aren't able to. Using Left 4 Dead as an example (I realize it's not a hack n' slash, bear with me), there's an achievement for vomitting on 4 people at once with the Boomer, another for killing all 4 humans as the Tank (who has a limited lifespan), etc. To get these, you have to have some skill with the game and understand the mechanics at least decently well. Some people luck out, but most people who get them have put a bit of time into the game. I didn't get the Boomer one until I got better at laying traps, learning what points in each man were a good spot to vomit from, and learning the range of my attack.

I think they could serve the same purpose in Diablo 3. Granted, there are always some achievements which are very easy to get and everyone has within a few days. Again, with Left 4 Dead, you get an achievement for everyone making it to the finish on the first map/campaign, regardless of difficulty. It was the first one I got. While easy, I don't think every achievement needs to be as difficult as the "Complete all maps on expert one." The same applies for Diablo 3. As I said before, I like them because they show yourself, and others, that you have skill and knowledge of the game.

As to the ones where you need to kill 1,000,000 zombies or whatever, I don't think those are meant to be ground out as you seem to suggest. You don't need ot waste your life. It just happens as you play. It's a sort of marker to demonstrate that you've been playing longer than others.

You said it buddy!!! The more like the old games it is the better!

I can't agree with that at all. I would like some level of similarity/familiarity, because it is the next line in the Diablo series and so it should share some qualities with its predecessors, but I am not looking for another D2 expansion. If they made a game that was the same as D2 but with new characters, I probably would play it for maybe a month at most and then quit. I've had 10 years of playing D2, I want something new.

Also, as a side note, I'm glad to see the stat system gone. I personally thought it was nothing more than a nuisance, and almost everyone (aside from the smaller group of people to make strange/outlier builds) had pretty much the exact same 2 stat builds: always pump strength for gear, no energy (except in energy ball sorcs), and either max block and put the rest into vit, or just pump vit. I am not going to miss the stat system at all, to be honest.

Honestly, I never really liked the MF system and hope it does not re appear in D3. The idea of you need really good gear with lots of MF on it to get really good gear just seems like an odd concept to me. However who knows if the system in D3 will be anything like D2 and I usually trust blizzard with such decisions to make the game the best possible.

Honestly though, I thought it made for a good progressive system. Every time I played D2, I would delete my old characters and start from scratch; I never had any real problem getting good MF gear. Essentially, I would buy what MF gear I could from vendors (gloves, boots, etc), then find perhaps a socketed helm and stick some perfect topazes in it. I would mf some, get some mediocre gear, put that on, go mf, get better gear, etc. While time consuming, I thought it worked well.

The only alternative I can think of would be something like WoW where each boss just has a % chance to drop specific items, but I don't like that system. I like the system in which bosses can drop any items within their clvl.

Perhaps I missed it, but i don't think it said there would be no MF besides shrines. I would presume you still can get it from gear, but perhaps you also can get a shrine that...I don't know, doubles it for a short time or something.

The only thing I liked about the old tetris system was that the items were in higher detail than other mmos that used the one-item-one-square system. Otherwise, I found it to be little more than a nuisance, having to constantly re-adjust crap to get more items in. Now, if they put in some sort of auto-arrange button (I've played a few games with tetris inventories that had such a button), that would be nice.

posted a message on Estimated d3 progress % by blizzcon
My guess is probably around 60-65%, somewhere around there. It's hard to judge though, because even if half of the content is in (as in literally half of what they plan to put in), the other half of the content might require far more time than the first. For example, even if they have 3 of 6 boss battles in (just a number I'm making up, don't take anything from it), they other 3 might have far more complicated mechanics or scripts than the first.

yeah buts kinda the same as we c in D2 you can kill all on your own exept ubers if you dont got a smiter or zealer or what ever you need. its good that you can kill mobs/bossen on your own if you need other ppl all the time its not gonne be very funny, just like wow i hated it that i needed healer tanks etc to do instance.

but they have to add some places you need more ppls just like baal runs etc more ppl more exp faster kills etc

See, the thing with Baal runs is that you don't need more people to do the run itself necessarily, it's just good for the extra experience. As far as the Ubers go, it's true that you need a party with that, but you also have to remember that those were added way far past the game's release, when it had been long established and the players were looking for something new. It was also an extra, something you didn't have to complete in order to get all the story/finish the main game. My point is that there shouldn't be anything vital to the storyline that you can't do on your own. Bonus quests, or special bosses of some sort? Sure, I'm all for that.

I'd say that it would have to be right outside of the cathedral. The creepy music paired with the scene of a gross blood trail flowing into the cathedral was probably the creepiest moment. Once in the cathedral it wasn't as bad as starring down that ominous cathedral with a blood trail.

That's definitely true, Umpa. I remember when I first started up the game and found that poor citizen lying on the ground, I got so freaked out. I can just remember thinking "Holy crap, what am I getting into?!" I seem to recall thinking that the Butcher might pop out and attack me at any moment.

posted a message on taking a look at how blizzard announces games and then releases.
It won't come out as late as 2012, but I think 2011 is a definite possibility. I would like to tell myself Q3 or Q4 of 2010, but I don't really see that happening. I'll keep myself occupied with SC2 until it comes out, but I would like to see it released before I go off to grad school.

Basically, the idea of this thread is just to post which Diablo location (from any of the games) you found to be the most frightening/creepiest, and why. For me, it is easily the Catacombs of the Cathedral from Diablo I. Even when playing the game in recent years as a 20 year old, those first few levels of the game still creep me out. It has a very claustrophobic feel, and the music is spooky. Part of it is likely my brain associating the catacombs with the fear I had as a child when I first played it, but nothing has matched those first levels of the game for me.

While I agree that there ought to be motivation of some sort for playing in a party, they can't really put stuff in the game that can't be done alone. There are going to be people who buy D3 that do not have internet, or not a good enough connection to play on Bnet. It would be pretty crappy to add in a whole bunch of stuff that these people can't do. The motivation for partying is likely going to come in the form of increased experience, as it was in Diablo II. I can't recall any other reason for partying besides completing questions and gaining experience more quickly.

I'm looking for a new game, not a D2 remake. As long as the game has a lot of new elements and some fast-paced, balanced game play, I will be happy.

posted a message on Who else thinks gold should be worth something in D3?
Anyone who says that using gold is a bad system because people with tons of time will just grind it out seem not to understand that that is a problem with item trading (as in D2) as well. The people with the best items and most wealth were usually the "assholes" who spent 12 hours a day mfing. No matter what trade system you have, the richest will be those with the most time.

posted a message on What entirely new character class would you like to see in D3?
I always thought traps would have been better if they had been more on the disabling/debuffing side of things that offensive attacks. This wouldn't be very fair in PvP, but for PvM you could have traps that stun, or maybe hold them in place (while still allowing them to attack melee), maybe confusion traps, etc. Traps that shot out lightning and fire just seemed kind of silly to me.

It bugs me when people make definitive statements like "This game was the best of the genre, end of discussion." I personally like the Diablo series the most out of the genre (though I thought Titan Quest single player was awesome), though I still would like to point out that it's entirely subjective. Bring in sales and fan base all you want, but it is impossible to definitively call any game "the best."
