Aug 20, 2009Sildrugtanni posted a message on Has the Tetris Inventory and Magic Find Returned?Perhaps I missed it, but i don't think it said there would be no MF besides shrines. I would presume you still can get it from gear, but perhaps you also can get a shrine that...I don't know, doubles it for a short time or something.Posted in: News

Aug 20, 2009Sildrugtanni posted a message on Has the Tetris Inventory and Magic Find Returned? The only thing I liked about the old tetris system was that the items were in higher detail than other mmos that used the one-item-one-square system. Otherwise, I found it to be little more than a nuisance, having to constantly re-adjust crap to get more items in. Now, if they put in some sort of auto-arrange button (I've played a few games with tetris inventories that had such a button), that would be nice.Posted in: News

I have to disagree with you on a few points. First, I personally don't think achievements are "fake" ways of adding life to games. They demonstrate that you know the game well enough and are good enough to do certain things that other people aren't able to. Using Left 4 Dead as an example (I realize it's not a hack n' slash, bear with me), there's an achievement for vomitting on 4 people at once with the Boomer, another for killing all 4 humans as the Tank (who has a limited lifespan), etc. To get these, you have to have some skill with the game and understand the mechanics at least decently well. Some people luck out, but most people who get them have put a bit of time into the game. I didn't get the Boomer one until I got better at laying traps, learning what points in each man were a good spot to vomit from, and learning the range of my attack.
I think they could serve the same purpose in Diablo 3. Granted, there are always some achievements which are very easy to get and everyone has within a few days. Again, with Left 4 Dead, you get an achievement for everyone making it to the finish on the first map/campaign, regardless of difficulty. It was the first one I got. While easy, I don't think every achievement needs to be as difficult as the "Complete all maps on expert one." The same applies for Diablo 3. As I said before, I like them because they show yourself, and others, that you have skill and knowledge of the game.
As to the ones where you need to kill 1,000,000 zombies or whatever, I don't think those are meant to be ground out as you seem to suggest. You don't need ot waste your life. It just happens as you play. It's a sort of marker to demonstrate that you've been playing longer than others.

I can't agree with that at all. I would like some level of similarity/familiarity, because it is the next line in the Diablo series and so it should share some qualities with its predecessors, but I am not looking for another D2 expansion. If they made a game that was the same as D2 but with new characters, I probably would play it for maybe a month at most and then quit. I've had 10 years of playing D2, I want something new.
Also, as a side note, I'm glad to see the stat system gone. I personally thought it was nothing more than a nuisance, and almost everyone (aside from the smaller group of people to make strange/outlier builds) had pretty much the exact same 2 stat builds: always pump strength for gear, no energy (except in energy ball sorcs), and either max block and put the rest into vit, or just pump vit. I am not going to miss the stat system at all, to be honest.

Honestly though, I thought it made for a good progressive system. Every time I played D2, I would delete my old characters and start from scratch; I never had any real problem getting good MF gear. Essentially, I would buy what MF gear I could from vendors (gloves, boots, etc), then find perhaps a socketed helm and stick some perfect topazes in it. I would mf some, get some mediocre gear, put that on, go mf, get better gear, etc. While time consuming, I thought it worked well.
The only alternative I can think of would be something like WoW where each boss just has a % chance to drop specific items, but I don't like that system. I like the system in which bosses can drop any items within their clvl.

See, the thing with Baal runs is that you don't need more people to do the run itself necessarily, it's just good for the extra experience. As far as the Ubers go, it's true that you need a party with that, but you also have to remember that those were added way far past the game's release, when it had been long established and the players were looking for something new. It was also an extra, something you didn't have to complete in order to get all the story/finish the main game. My point is that there shouldn't be anything vital to the storyline that you can't do on your own. Bonus quests, or special bosses of some sort? Sure, I'm all for that.

That's definitely true, Umpa. I remember when I first started up the game and found that poor citizen lying on the ground, I got so freaked out. I can just remember thinking "Holy crap, what am I getting into?!" I seem to recall thinking that the Butcher might pop out and attack me at any moment.
