    Quote from "rhunex" »
the petition against the artwork has nearly 55,000 signatures, whereas the one for the artwork is just shy of 2,000.
This would mean more if there were only 57,000 Diablo fans. As it stands, I think the art direction is terrific and that the Photoshop desatuarizations are crap, but I have not signed any petition for the artwork and won't. I don't need to. Blizzard has said multiple times now that the art style is set.

Despite what the 'Art Director' says
I had to highlight this. While I am not here to challenge your mad editing skills (I don't know you and it would be foolish to make assumptions about you), I'll note that I think Gears of Wars is boring to look at. The graphics are drawn extremely well, but everything is gray and brown. I'll pass on two-toned worlds. It's just not my style. I am able to experience suspense, drama, and tension even with a bright purple tapestry in the room.

posted a message on New Diablo Novel by Robert B. Marks?
I bought the e-book of Demonsbane. It was in a proprietary format that would open in a PDF file. Even with a full version of Adobe Acrobat, I could not convert to a printable format, so I took Print Screens of EVERY page and posted them into Publisher 2 pages to a sheet. Then I printed the book and stapled it. I read it in one sitting, and it now sits on the shelf with all of the other Diablo novels.

Part of my crying when D3 was announced was because he's not here to play it with me. We had so much fun playing together on our own network and Bnet too.
That's horribly sad. Perhaps playing Diablo III can make you feel a bit closer to him now and again.

I know my wife and I look forward to playing together.

as soon as I heard that Egyptian music with that Egyptian Woman's voice along with the hordes of creatures, I wanted to do a face palm or hide myself.
I have never seen more facepalm on the Internet than on this forum. Can you tell us what is wrong with the "Egyptian" music?

Wikipedia [definition, editable by anyone with a pc and Internet conenction]

EDITED: I found an actual academic source delineating elements of gothic literature:
What makes a work Gothic is a combination of at least some of these elements:
    • a castle, ruined or intact, haunted or not,
    • ruined buildings which are sinister or which arouse a pleasing melancholy,
    • dungeons, underground passages, crypts, and catacombs which, in modern houses, become spooky basements or attics,
    • labyrinths, dark corridors, and winding stairs,
    • shadows, a beam of moonlight in the blackness, a flickering candle, or the only source of light failing (a candle blown out or an electric failure),
    • extreme landscapes, like rugged mountains, thick forests, or icy wastes, and extreme weather,
    • omens and ancestral curses,
    • magic, supernatural manifestations, or the suggestion of the supernatural,
    • a passion-driven, wilful villain-hero or villain,
    • a curious heroine with a tendency to faint and a need to be rescued–frequently,
    • a hero whose true identity is revealed by the end of the novel,
    • horrifying (or terrifying) events or the threat of such happenings.
The Gothic creates feelings of gloom, mystery, and suspense and tends to the dramatic and the sensational, like incest, diabolism, and nameless terrors.
I feel that this supports your position better than mine, SSJ5Broly. I'll go ahead here and say I am wrong to try to confine it to literature written in the 19th century.. It seems that experts in literature apply it braodly to allow for evolution with new technology. What was once a candle in a dark and dank hall might now be a flashlight in a dark basement during a power failure.

Gothic literature seems to be just a horror genre that encompasses horror set in a place of Gothic architecture and during the Middle Ages (about the time frame Diablo franchise is set according to the visual style of Sanctuary world.)
I really could just have the conversation based on that definition (and THANK YOU for defining what people think they mean). But that is not the true definition of gothic literature. Gothic literature was the stuff I described from the 19th century: Dracula, Frankenstein, and Jekyll and Hyde. It often involves the influences of science to reflect the contemporary society's fear of this "new" movement that was gaining momentum.

The literature that was written during the Gothic era includes such greats as Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (and Sir Thomas Mallory's tales of King Arthur) , and Celtic tales like those found in the Mabinogion. All of these tales were somewhat farcical, containing white hares (bunnies!) that would lead heroes into a wood where they'd meet a fairy who grant them a wish or send them on a journey. Colors were described vividly, and bright colors were a sign of wealth because people were too poor to afford clothing that was dyed. I can't tell you the number of times I read about some dignitary wearing a vest of "all yellow brocade" when I took my graduate course on Medieval literature.

But thank you again for taking the time to tell me what the people saying gothic here thinks it means. It will help me to better understand their points.

This post is (A) Feigning ignorance to post incorrect claims or (B) Being ignorant. I'm telling it as it is right now, so I apologize that it seems insolent - I'm an impudent person (though I like to call it bluntness, honesty, et cetera).
I'm sorry you misunderstood what I was asking you. I really wanted to know which definition of gothic you meant.

The one about 18th century literature seems closest, but the world of Sanctuary does not seem that advanced to me. They don't have printing presses, for instance. Also, in 19th century earth, science was gaining a lot of prominence. So we had gothic novels like Dracula (fantasy) alongside Frankenstein (science fiction). We had Jekyll and Hyde.

I am willing to talk about concepts that are not gloomy enough, not realistic enough, or not scary enough. But I'm sorry, I still don't see gothic as an applicable adjective yet. Your reply to me was spent in ridicule and derision rather than answering the question. And that's cool. I ain't mad at ya. Don't see you as an enemy. Just trying to see what you are talking about. :)

I searched and could not find any of those 14 definitions to reference the size of shoulderpads, green light sources in dungeons, or a lack of bunnies and rainbows during the Gothic era. It is 100% OK for some people to find fault in all of these artistic details in Diablo III, but "gothic" is not the word they are looking for as best I can tell.

posted a message on Mephisto and Auriel Sitting in a Tree?
    Quote from "Atrumentis" »
What? Lol, I agree that Mephisto and Auriel seem to have once been lovers (like Inarius and Lilith), but tainted by evil? No, I doubt it.
Taint was a poor choice of words. I meant "influenced." I still don't necessarily believe there was anything between them. But the possibility only recently occurred to me as a I reread that passage.

The fact that any angels were able to deny Order long enough to mate and commune with demons--and that the demons were able to forgo chaos long enough to do the same with angels--made me wonder about what Tyrael and Imperius discussed about angels being compelled to fight the eternal struggle. How is it that the renegade angels and demons managed to put aside the conflict?

And however we decide they managed to unshackle themselves of the intrinsic need to advance their respective causes, is it really that much more of a stretch to conclude that once the compulsion is broken that the same being could masquerade as normal but serve the other side?

posted a message on Mephisto and Auriel Sitting in a Tree?
Question: Do Mephisto (Prime Evil) and Auriel (member of the Angiris Council) have some kind of relationship?

Canon passages in question (from The Veiled Prophet by Richard A. Knaak):
"This is a peaceful visit, oh, councilors," rasped a voice like a nest of angry vipers. "Peaceful--if you would have it so."
    [....]
YOU OFFER PARLEY...LORD MEPHISTO? Auriel asked the shadow. YOU...NOT YOUR BROTHER?
    [....]
Imperius took over the situation from Auriel. WHAT PACT IS THIS YOU PROPOSE?

A hint of great, sharp teeth momentarily flashed into sight where the demon's head should have been. "We, like you, made false assumptions about this place, false assumptions about the creatures spawned by both our kind."

A blazing red eye materialized, then winked in the direction of Auriel, who utterly ignored it.

The first 3 times I read this exchange, I just took Mephisto's wink to be a lewd gesture intended to offend and insult Auriel.

But upon reading it for a fourth time yesterday, with the context of the Tyrael and Imperius conspiracies/theories in mind, I began to wonder if perhaps there were more to it.

What IF Auriel was Mephisto's lover at some point? Despite how kindly she treated Mendeln and how dedicated she was to seeing Sanctuary develop (LET THEIR POTENTIAL BE DEVELOPED...FOR IN THEM I THINK THERE IS A CHANCE THAT WE MAY SEE THE END OF OUR STRUGGLE AT LAST!), could she become (or perhaps was she already) influenced by the Prime Evils?

If she had mothered Lucion or Lilith with Mephisto, might she be tainted in some way? Could it be that she her statement about the end od the struggle was laden with irony?

Now, I am not saying the IS the case, that Auriel is an agent of evil, but I think it gives us one more thing to talk about.

    This is the final score.

    Imperius: Against survival of Sanctuary.
    Auriel: Pro survival of Sanctuary.
    Itherael: Pro survival of Sanctuary.
    Tyrael: Pro survival of Sanctuary.
    Malthael: Null

So in essence it was 3 for the survival of Sanctuary, 1 for it's destruction, and 1 undecided/null.
Yes. I stand corrected from the counts I have said earlier in these lore threads. I forgot that they were worried it would end 2-2-1, and the tie would go to destruction.
