Legendary items are still the top tier from what I read since they STILL offer more properties than rares. In the true endgame, say after 2k hours, you won't have upgraded rare items on you. Upgraded rares would be just the step to perfect legendaries.
Magic -> Rare -> Upgraded rare/set/legendary -> Legendary with perfect rolls/mythics
If D4 is to come 2021 they will show a playable demo at Blizzcon. But I personally doubt it that is the case since their official statement after the fiasco last year was that they did NOT had any plans for D4 reveal at Blizzcon 2018.
Yep, I expect D4 announcement with cinematic and gameplay video.
If I have to predict a release year, I go with 2022 in case D4 has open world, and 2021 if it is classical aRPG like D2 and D3.
We could easily get a D4 announcement at Blizzcon 2019 and it could easily turn out to be an FPS game.
Don't get hyped up until we see a D4 gameplay on PC!
If D4 is indeed already 4 years in development and has changed drastically during this time, this means even worse news - its developers are same level clowns as those of D3.
Meanwhile the new PoE patch notes word count is over 9000 - literally. Not a joke! Precisely 10304 words. It even goes above the paragon cap in D3!
Server slams in 2018. Feels BETA man!
D2: HD mod in 2019.
D3: Maintenance mode, more of the same we already have, power creep.
D4: Possible announcement in 2020. If it is not a top-down view it is a no buy for me and the logic is it won't be. It will look flashy and colorful in a 3d perspective allowing people to spend tons of cash on it for cosmetic items.
aRPG/MMO in another universe: I'd love to see a post-apocalyptic (Fallout-like) setting done by a top studio like Blizzard. I think such setting gives a lot more freedom to its designers and would kind of change our focus from the typical things present in Diablo.
Summary: Whatever comes next, it will be oriented with the idea to make money. It won't be done just for the sake of experimenting with something new, it will be well calculated money machine. That said I don't expect miracles. For such to happen passion and freedom are needed. And money does not have to be your main goal. It has to be the art and the gamers. Kind of unrealistic things for the big studios. But at least one can enjoy the AAA cinematics from them. They seem to sell the products well.

Next year is D2 HD. If they are making D4 or an aRPG in another universe it is 99% not a top-down view like D2/D3 and we might expect the reveal of that not earlier than 2019.

Well, this will still hurt the people playing non-season (if they cap only season paragon, if thats what you mean).
The problem with the uncapped gems is not only this one. I wrote long time ago in a thread concerning the solo players that gems needs to be capped. That's it! I don't have to play 2s, 3s or 4s in order to boost my gem levels if I don't want to. Gems have to be capped for the sake of fair competition. And for the sake of balance - this would mean some gems would have different max level than other, but all will be in a range - level 40 ~ 60 or whatever for the current patch is optimal.

The answer should be the competition. If you managed to get the best gear, then my friend, start using it for where its needed, not for grinding meaningless low level GR in order to get more paragon. Yes, we don't have PvP in D3, but still there is some form of competition and its clearly not the paragon leveling.

Sure it is, but the question remains: To what extend one should be farming for paragon?
If they cap it at 800, nobody will farm for paragon, because at some point during the season you will reach the cap. If they cap it at X with X > 800, what is the optimal X level? Or should they cap it at all? Maybe they should just lower the main stat bonus after P800 and scale it differently? Blizz devs have to think about this, because its getting/looking ugly.
And a last thought - should a 24/7 player have an edge at GR over 8h/day or 4h/day player stats wise (from paragon)?

They deserve some kind of reward, thats for sure. It's just that the current reward is too much. Give them custom portraits, forum avatars, stash space or whatever the design team decides. Just don't equal pointless grinding with skill. In D2 it was the PvP and the itemization that mattered. And nobody cared about the level of the other. At the end it was who's the one collecting the ear.

For the people who don't handle Math good, here is TLDR explanation:
At P2000+ you will earn paragon levels faster than when you were P2000.
Theoretically this is a suicide design done by the developers.
I wrote in the D3 forums before that the paragon mechanic needs tuning. With this info now - well, it needs a complete redesign.
My suggestion:
Cap the bonus from stats at P800.
Turn the points after P800 in a currency:
With this currency the dedicated players who reach P1k, P1.5k, P2k etc can buy special cosmetic rewards, more stash space etc...
What happens if blizzard doesn't fix the paragon design:
After some years the items will be less important than the Paragon level.
It's their choice after all. Do they want to gain botters/lose players or not?

It seems like blizzard aren't playing their own game. No success of any kind. They somehow CAN'T understand that the current trial mechanic is beyond retarded and wastes the time of all players.
Jaetch, Bagstone, if you could start a new thread there and other people from DF participate we could get more attention, so the trial mechanic be out of the game in season 3. Let's hope!
