• published the article Top Ten Biggest Jerks in Diablo
The amusing articles from Project XII just keep on coming on his blog over at Hellforge. This time, he's written an article entitled the "Top Ten Biggest Douchebags", with regards to the top ten biggest jerks in the Diablo setting.

Every story has its bad guys. They’re often a one dimensional, single minded villain that wants something like money, or power, or world destruction. An antagonist who everyone hates and whose defeat drives the plot. In the case of the Diablo games, it’s Diablo himself.

And while Big Red is nasty in appearance and intent, he’s not much for conversation. In fact, during the series so far he’s had no more then three lines of dialogue! Some might not even count the speech of the Dark Wanderer as Diablo, in that case, two!
We love our bad guys, but occasionally we like them to be a little less… “Grrr I’m bad, kill me”.

That’s where the Douchebags come in (Note: not an official authoring term). Stories often need side characters to give one-dimensional-bad-guy some support. Sometimes they’re working for him as ultra-skilled or ultra-humorous body guards. Sometimes they’re protagonists that can never get things right. More often then not they’re double-undercover-secret-triple-serial-side swappers, who started off good but turned bad on the road to revenge (and will probably come good again in the end).

The prolific Project XII has written a new entry in his blog at Hellforge featuring what he thinks are the Top 10 Coolest Moments in Diablo and Diablo II.

The Diablo games are renowned for their cool moments. Quests, scripted events, cut scenes and skills: all offering a plethora of fun things for us to oogle and yell “Holy crap!” at.

Time and graphics may have diminished some of them now, but we still have our fond memories. Not to mention a few new ones coming our way, if the D3 gameplay video has anything to say about it. Let’s look at the Top Ten Coolest Moments from everything Diablo related we’ve seen so far.

And remember, if you think you know cooler ones, you’re wrong, and probably thought Transformers was a good movie.

  • published the article VideoGamer Talks To Blizzard
A new interview has cropped up over at VideoGamer, which asked Jay Wilson a few questions about the ongoing development of Diablo III. The interview has a few nice bits that touch upon the developers' personal tastes, like the following:
VideoGamer.com: If you could single out one feature of D3 to convince someone to by the game, what would it be? What's the coolest feature?

JW: The coolest announced feature? (laughter) There are a few we've not revealed yet! For me it would have to be the character classes. I know that's kind of an odd feature to pick, but one of the things that was a hallmark of D2, one of the thigns that made it a favourite game of mine, was that the character classes were extremely archetypal. They were the kind of characters that people inherently wanted to play - they were very visceral, very powerful, very satisfying. Running through the world and hitting stuff with an axe felt really good. So when we started on D3 one of our main objectives was not to match the game on that front, but to surpass it. And that's something I feel we've really accomplished when you look at the character classes, the skillset we've put on them is really imaginative, very over the top and original. We've really tried to go for classes that are not your standard warrior, rogue, mage. We're not trying to provide something that's unknown to the players, but rather classes that are not what you'd typically see.

  • published the article Able Gamers Interviews Blizzard, Leaves Us Puzzled
Able Gamers has scored an interview with Jay Wilson and Leonard Boyarsky with a few common questions to which we already know the answers and some weird ones like these:
Steve, AbleGamers: From what I'm getting so far. Generally speaking, Diablo III will be an entirely new concept in game. So you guys are not trying to pull any ideas from Diablo II, you will not be building on anything other than the world of Tristam

Jay, Blizzard: I wouldn't say and we would pull anything from Diablo two. It's just only look in different areas. We make decisions based on what from that area we want to bring back. For example, the items for Islam is not going to be the exact same as Diablo there are some changes, but the core of it is basically the same, or using the basically the same item generation mechanics backend systems, drop rates, data and information because that system work really really well. In the case of classes, we chose to try to create new classes, because he wanted to provide new gameplay in the area. So we really tried to handle this on a case-by-case basis we not trying to... we definitely don't want to rehash Diablo II, but we don't want to throw it away either.
    Huh?

  • published the article Top 10 Monsters You'd Hate To See in Diablo III
The Bad, the Worse, and the Completely Stupid of the Diablo world. Diablo III blogger Project XII has written on his blog at Hellforge about the top 10 monsters you don't want to see in Diablo III in his new article entitled "Top Ten Monster Farewells".

    He writes:
From the surprisingly large amount of unwanted creatures, I’ve managed to wheedle things down to a Top Ten list. Competition was tight; after all, it’s hard to pick the bad ones from the plain irrelevant… no one’s going to be interested in a three paragraph explanation about why the mosquito’s of Kruast were crap. Most of you will probably struggle to remember anything about Act 3 (it’s a big square place with a tower, right?).

So grab your shotguns and prepare to give Diablo’s Top Ten equivalents of Macaulay Culkin a proper farewell. I’m sure they can find work elsewhere… maybe in something for Runic Games?
And remember, if you don’t agree with me, you probably are Macaulay Culkin. Dude, wtf was “Party Monster”? You deserve to be unemployed.

Diablo III will have its own unique needs in terms of what Battle.Net provides

Pearce also revealed that the team working on the new Battle.Net is a separate division within Blizzard.

The Battle.Net team is actually a separate group of engineers working on that functionality,” he added. “So, they’re working with the StarCraft II team and they’ll be working pretty integrally with the Diablo III team as well.

Bashiok was recently interviewed at incgamers where he discussed aspects of Diablo III ranging from its new health orb system to other aspects of gameplay. One of the subjects he touched base upon was the health/mana leech system that most of us have been used to in Diablo II, to which he said:
Well, health and mana leach may not come back. There's balance issues, and they may not make it into Diablo III
What is your take on the subject?

GameBanshee has a new interview with Diablo III's Lead World Director, Leonard Boyarsky.

Boyarsky is well known for his work on Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines and Arcanum for Troika Games, and most fans of Troika should be familiar with his work on the original Fallout, the latest sequel to which is being released in only a couple of months.

In the interview, Leon discusses his responsibilities to the Diablo III team and the role he plays in the game's development as well as the direction of the game's technology, artwork and Blizzard's decision to keep the isometric viewpoint of the original games that so many other titles, including Fallout 3, have abandoned for a more 'next-gen' first-person-viewpoint approach.

They're good games, and if you're a fan of Diablo, you'll definitely want to play them.

  • published the article PC Gamer's Diablo III Cover Story
The latest issue of PC Gamer that's currently only available to subscribers of the magazine is featuring a cover story and preview of none other than Diablo III.

The issue of PC Gamer has yet to hit the shelves, but BlizzardGuru managed to get their hands on the issue and take photos of the pages, which they've uploaded for viewing.

The magazine doesn't contain too much new information, however and goes through the typical questions that most of us have asked and had answered by Bashiok on the forums and Jay Wilson in various interviews online.

However, the issue also contains some interesting reading, such as a fanboy vs hater op-ed piece, a column regarding the color/art petition and a Q&A section with some new information about the game. The article also contains a feature on what we know and what we don’t, with some very detailed speculation on the matters.

    Thanks for the tip, Sp3tsnaz!
