France is 8 hours ahead of the central time zone.
France is 9 hours ahead of the western time zone.
Sorry, I had spotted inaccurate time zone information earlier in the thread. However, to all those in Paris, wish I could be there, but i'm currently occupied in England. Have an awesome vacation, and please keep us updated with all the juicy details!
Nice try, but:
France +6 EST
France +7 CST
France +8 Mountain ST
France +9 PST (western)

See, you're one of the fans I was talking about. I never said anything about WoW like graphics. Maybe it can be implied, but not the way I read it.
I see your point, but your reaction and statements back up my post. And you didn't put forth an argument for the fact that I like it better, despite being a Diablo fan.
Blizzard has gone a different design route for several reasons, but put them all in a funnel and what comes out the bottom is Diablo 3. Sure WoW is successful, as SC2 will most certainly be. But IMO, Blizzard feels this way:
Why should we settle for 30 million dollars when we can make twice more by appealing to a wider range of audience. The dedication and passion of Diablo fans is nice, but nice don't pay the rent.
All I'm offering is logical reasons why they went the direction they did with the graphic design. I doubt they will lose many true fans because of it. .

Reading this part of his post, something dawned on me...one reason most are arguing about the graphics is that THEY ARE DIABLO FANS and HAVE PLAYED DIABLO. Look at it from another perspective:
As hard as it may be to believe, there are a while slew of gamers (thousands, tens or hundreds of thousands?) that have never played the game. A fair percentage have never even seen it. As an example, I polled my 9, 14, 19 year old sons, and my wife. My wife could care less, but said if she were to play either game based on looks alone, it would be Diablo 3.
My 19 year old has seen me play Diablo 2, but never played it himself. He plays war games and flight sims. He absolutely had a fit when he saw Diablo 3 trailer. " OMG dad, that is so AWESOME, when does it come out...I gotta have that!"
The two younger sons have never seen D2, but they freaked when they saw Diablo 3 and were not even impressed with D2.
And I have to admit, I played through both the early games about 5 times a piece. I haven't played either in about 3 or 4 years. I loaded up D2 when I stumbled across this site when the countdown started back in April. After the games I have been playing (and WoW ain't one of 'em, hate it) like Witcher, DDO, Oblivion and AoC, quite frankly I couldn't play it through.
Because of the graphics mainly. They just seemed...dated and old fashioned. And I consider myself a FAN of the series. I was truly psyched when there was even an inkling a new, updated version of the game was coming out.
I guess my point is this...Blizzard is trying to stay true to the franchise, as much as they can. They want to keep as many Diablo fans as they can. But there is a whole new generation or demographic of gamer they are trying to bring in to the game as well. People that are accustomed to a...for lack of a better phrase...more modern and up to date look. It is a business after all. For every hardcore Diablo fan they lose, and I hope they don'y lose any, there will be three to take their place. Like it or not, Blizzard knows what they are doing or rather, what they want to do. They aren't as successful as they are for nothing.

I agree wholeheartedly with this post, and the warcraft comparison is priceless.
However, while Blizzard was never obligated TO their fans to remake Diablo, it would have been foolish, economically speaking, not to. Thus, the metamorphasis to the next generation, and the subsequent bashing that has accompanied it.
C-H-A-N-G-E.....inevitable, necessary, different...of the 12,14, 18 thousand petition signers, how many would rather have this iteration of Diablo 3 , or nothing at all? I thought so.

You made some subtle changes, and aside from the gargoyles, I don't see a game-breaking difference.
This isn't directed specifically at you...and is just one person's perspective. I know it's just an example, but this is a screenshot, a picture that can be disected and studied, as are the rest I have seen. It is very easy to pick apart a picture. For others, they look at the game in other ways. For instance:
I imagine charging in this same room and seeing a buttload of mobs (22 actually) that need my immediate attention. I ain't gonna pay attention to the pikachu gargoyles and that the floor is green. Much of what makes Diablo is as much the sheer adrenaline pumping, heart pounding rush of encountering multiple baddies at one time, and laying waste to them. Who has the time to admire the scenery? When I'm through, I may roll over, light up a smoke and stare at the ceiling... or the scenery. Just as likely not though. I can be awed and sucked in by the peripheral scenery while I'm running from room to room, scene to scene.
My point being, I was much more impressed with the barb's animations interacting with the environment and mobs, the added skill level that appears is going to be needed, and the obvious advancements(improvements IMO) of the graphics engine over Diablo 2.

Side note: can you change the font color to the sources (brighter)?...kinda hard to read...unless this is for the hard core, gotta have dark graphics crowd....I KID, I KID.

Apparently, a LOT of folks also like the new look, with some of those probably in favor of a few visual tweaks. Count me in the second group. I think the game looks AMAZING! I think there is definitely a darkish mood already, and that was the first look at the game. Who knows, maybe they'll strike a happy medium...I don't see how it could be so difficult to implement graphic controls that can achieve the same thing. Heck, most modern monitors and graphic cards allow manipulation of these things.

Hell, let's even reincarnate Baal, Mephisto, The Lord of Terror himself; while we're at it, let's start the game out in Tristram. Man, it would be so awesome.
It's so hard to believe that after all these years, it wasn't as clear as it is now. We don't need Diablo3, we just need to expand on Diablo 2 again. Or better yet, just slap that D2 disc in the old tray and let the demons spew forth.
GIVE ME A BREAK...this game is announced after years of waiting and all most people want to do is bash it. It's not the same team heading it up, what did everyone expect? Given the success of WoW, I'm pleasantly surprised there isn't a butt-load more influence transferred to D3. Just to be clear, I ain't asking for that.
BTW, the reason for my rant is all the petition this, change that, which do you prefer, negativity threads. Primarily of the graphics variety. Elfen Lied listed about 12 or so games, and Diablo 2 graphics have over 50% vote; 11 OTHER GAMES TOTAL can't beat one. Hell he didn't even offer Diablo 3 as a choice. The total might not have been so skewed then.
Or maybe it would have, but that is my point. The majority don't want a new game...they want Diablo 2, in all it's glory exactly as as it was before, at least that is what it seems.
Guess what...it ain't happening! Helllloooo McFlyyy, Diablo 3 is coming out. Brand spanking, shiny, show room fresh to a video game store near you. And guess what...it will be different to a dergree, it's inevitable! Revere Diablo 2 for what it is...one of the greatest games of all time. But at the same time, don't bash D3 for what it is not, and that my friends, is Diablo 2.

Not really, not compared to the looney-toons on this forum stating that they wish they were terminally ill for a chance at a beta disc...making light of the dude's illness.
game video fake or not, illness fake or not...doesn't really matter...if the illness is real, I'm sure he would much rather be not sick than playing D3 beta.
Some of you guys are really f***ing crude! even the ones half-ass joking, shit ain't funny. Watch someone with cancer wilt away right in front of you, ain't cool! Don't care if you think I'm the morality police...GTFUp!!!

Ok, you lost me right here...engaging and deep? I can in no way say this game engaged me like, say, the BG series, IDale, NWN etc.
Hack-n-slash, grab loot, beat the bad guy, rinse and repeat...but it was different every time, even doing the same thing. This is what was so cool to me.

Kudos for maintaining school and work on your own!!! That being said, you don't need a $2000 rig. You can get something in the 500-800 dollar range that will play almost every game available today and the near future at acceptable levels. And that price won't change a 1-2 years from now...this years high end will be low-end by that time. Only you know what you can afford, I'm just saying...

Your point is well taken, and there are pics I have seen "improved" that look better, some not as good as the "original". The bottom line is that this is simply a demo trailer, and the screenshots are taken from the game at this stage of development.
I expect them to "enhance" the graphics as development goes on. I also expect, as others have said, that in-game graphic options will allow for this as well. The overall gothic feel is there, to me. I'm happy as hell with the design-for the most part, and again, IT"S STILL EARLY!
At any rate, Rob Pardo has said the game design has already gone through 3 iterations and they feel that they have it right as of now. That's not to say there won't be tweaks, but basically, what you see is what you get, for now and in the long run. All this speculation, while interesting, is going to prove somewhat futile, I would imagine.
And for those of you complaining about next gen graphics of any kind and the strain on your computer- you've got to be kidding. I have a HP HDX with a 8800GTS and a 20 inch screen...I almost can't stand to play D2 on it because of how grainy it is. The point being is that there is no way, even given Blizzard's propensity to make games playable over a wide range of computers, that a PC bought 4,5, or 6 years ago is going to play this game well when it comes out, a year and a half or so from now. This may not be the case for a lot, but the ones that bring it up...sheesh.

If there was one thing I would change, I have to agree that some -witch doctor especially- charcters and monsters looked a little too cartoonish. This could change in my opinion. But the back-drop, scenery, environment, what ever you want to call it, is a 1000% improvement in my opinion. May just be the jump from 2d to 3d, but it rocks. I definitely had a gloomy feel as I watched the trailer. My 2 cents...
