haha I know - I had that to. But you can upgrade your academy so you have more researchers. Also, all your colonies will research the same thing at the sametime - that also really speeds up research time.
To check your co-ordinates, go to your town map and in the top left hand screen of the game, it should have a picture of the world, then a picture of an island along with it's name and the co-ordinates for it. If you can't find it like that, then just go to 'Show World' and the default co-ordinates are the co-ordinates of your island.
And you can't join an alliance until you get some kind of research thing done, which takes a long time to get to.
