I think that would be consistent; anyway ranger, druid and hunter are from the same cultural area : the use of bows (or other weapons made of wood), control over the forces of nature, animals and spirits summoning, shapeshifting into animal forms, and even traps. All these fit within the theme of nature (life) against evil (death).
I whish this will make it in the game somehow.

some snakes spits venom at distance from target
    monkeys can throw stuffs
    and about the skunk ?

ok, maybe not so great ideas to implement in D3...

I think shapeshifting has a lot of potential, in terms of gameplay, visual, fun... it could fit well with the new rune system, and it can be really "over the top", as Jay Wilson likes diablo's characters.
Although it seems less of an archetype than the ranger (if we look at diablo's history), I would be surprised not to see shapeshifting in D3, in some ways.

so what ? and even so, it's not final yet, and we can assume the skill/stat system won't aim to limit builds variety. Diablo doesn't like limitations.

Turmobil... shapeshifting = melee attack ? you assume too fast, this is not necessary. Also, D2's druid could use ranged attack or being melee shapeshifted, it is not incompatible. The amazon could be fully ranger and fully melee... one character, 3 skill trees: many various builds.

I don't see why shapeshifting would be incompatible with a ranger. Actually the mix would sound very cool to me

Like others said I think major announcement such as character classes are to be made at major events like blizzcon or worldwide invitational. no doubt about this.
so it is very likely that the 5th class will only appear next summer (when those event usually take place).
Now I wouldn't except any release date announcement, nor any hint about it within the next year. Look at Starcraft 2, it's been more than a year we can see battle reports which show a game that's pretty final, but still, it's not even beta yet...

yes, healer cannot be a diablo class because it is a fighting game, the archetype has to be based on attack/damage types. A healer wouldn't be able to play solo. This of course doesn't forbid healing abilities as secondary skills

who knows ? these 3 iconic skills can be combined all together and/or with new stuff, precisely because they are iconic.

well, none of us can answer this for sure, but it seems to me they already picked up among all 7 D2 classes without feeling limited (ie the martial art from LOD assassin and D3 monk).
I think we have to separate attack/damage types from the "class flavor" (can't find another way to express my thought); by that I'd say we have to imagine a ranged attack fighter that doesn't look and feel like the D2 amazon; or a shapeshifter that would not be a druid. keep an open mind about the 5th class I'd say

the human / non human alternative makes shapeshifting abilities very interesting from dev point of view I think. As traditionally playable characters in Diablo are humans, shapeshifting gives the possibility to a human character to become non human for a while, bringing diversity, originality and fun into gameplay. At least it seems some of us really like the idea of incarnating a non human character.

true, and I think D3 devs do the same; I don't think they exclude LOD when they look back before conceptualizing and designing D3 classes. well, to be honnest I don't know, it's just my way of seeing this class concept thing

it has probably being said already but... if you look at the attack/damage type panel in D2 you have:
    melee physical damage
    melee magical damage
    ranged physical damage
    ranged magical damage
attack by summoning things (both physical and magical damages)
    attack/damage through shapeshifting
I might miss some types but that's basically it.
so what is missing so far in D3 ?
as far as I can tell : ranged physical and shapeshifting
so one can guess the fifth class will use one or the other or both types of attack/damage

posted a message on Wanting to get to 99
In D2 it was a bit discouraging to get to lvl 99 because playing at high level was not rewarding in terms of xp while dying in hell mode costed a lot. So it was all about baal runs using the safest technique (= less fun) for hours... and hours. I like the idea of taking risks of loosing xp if dying in hell mode but it also has to be rewarding to stay alive.
