Quote fromactually i wouldn't be that disappointed....
I wouldn't also, it's just the idea of how strange it would be, seeing they left it aside for so long... Nostalgic would be the word to describe it.
I believe Magistrate is right, but I want to reinforce that the idea of announcement is just the simple proof the game is being worked on, very different to what Blizzcon is expected to show. At WWI, we're just hoping to have our wishes realised, with everyone saying: "Here's a teaser! But that's all you get from us now, bye!"; but only at Blizzcon we shall see clearly which way it's heading, through actual gameplay and more in-depth explanations.

Yeah, I personally think its the very last option... but I do hope that whatever he wanted us to think indeed come true...
Nice, but I will have to wait for some time before I get back on D2... Damn uni...

Don't the Scourge and Forsaken count?
PS: Dunno why i never saw anyone bringing that up before...
Anyway, a patch is a patch so please let's just get the WWI hype bursting out...

just to fill you in man, it never did anything, although people always wondered why was that there in the first place.. if I recall also one Blizzard employee mentioned once that the gem was working perfectly, so there you go, as in the dark as everyone else...

easy answer: get on wowwiki.com and read all the lore, then you come and tell me how much did the main storyline actually avanced, and how long did it take to get there.
(Answer: KJ, Illidan, Kel'athas (?) are down + 9999+ other smaller story lines take place and are begun and ended with. Conclusion: no one can tell exactly what happened in the game lore-wise.)

Anyway back to D3: I think a rune system would be nice, although I think it should't be inserted the same way as in D2. Most RW take some time to be made, mainly due to the rune's drop rate which, considering the single player mode, are too small (obs. the system would work much better in a MMO environment), so that by the time you have the right runes to make one, chances are you found a better item already. Anyway, I don't have time to suggest a full solution yet, but in my opinion Blizzard should have different drop rates in single player and multiplayer modes.... I'm not sure if it is so in D2, but if it is, at least concerning runes, they did a terrible job.
