Um, common sense?

Most 2 handers that drop in beta do ~12 DPS (14 if you are lucky). Ceremonial knives (WD only) even at white do around 10 or so. Voodoo dolls ad 1-3 damage to each attack. So your knife and voodoo doll is already roughly equivalent to a 2 hander. Factor in weapon speed and it's a no brainer.

Run a side by side comparison. Do a WD with a 2 hander and another with a 1 hander, and spam corpse spiders. You tell me what's obviously more effective. One shot spells like Firebats isn't really an indicator of how the WD works.

Your wizard orb is exactly the same. You will get a better wand and an orb (around level 5 or 6) that is the same deal. For a while, you might have a wizard running around with a bow or something else not meant for long term use..
