PVP in D3 could potentially be very similar to PVP in D2 with some modifications. My suggestion is that a new element of notoriety be incorporated into the game. In RL, ff you were a really efficient and feared murderer you would have a reputation and that reputation would be known by those who are sufficiently experienced and possibly murderers themselves, correct? The greater your reputation the less experienced one would have to be to know of you. For example, your children may already know of the most heinous of criminals that ever existed, but it would take an older, more educated and wiser person to know of the lesser or more esoteric criminals.
If they can provide a mechanism whereby players are more attuned to a hostile individual's status (with experience) or perhaps create quests or events that allow you to buff your awareness without overtly tipping off the true nature of a player (i.e. the PK wouldn't get the obvious label "Murderer" appended to their name), there would be that lingering sense of danger - but it would be more realistic. You'd have to be very experienced to spot an edge-case killer, but the most grotesque and accomplished murderers are easily spotted even by lowbies.
Quite opposed to the random "take your chances" feel of PVP in D2 but still in accordance with the evil and gritty Diablo environment that makes the game what it is.
EDIT: In addition, your reputation can dwindle the longer you go without killing another player - thereby slowly eliminating the perceived threat to other players. You would have to kill again to bring it back up. It makes for a more legendary experience - a single player can be known as the one who slayed thousands, but has slipped into memory - his presence hardly known. You could make a character whose primary goal is to terrorize others - and then slowly play him into extinction - only to be resurrected more brutal than before at an unexpected moment.

Apr 30, 2008TheOctagon posted a message on Diablo3.com becomes Diablofans.com! Blizzard acquires diablo3.com.Come on. After years of speculation, the endless debates - over 120 pages of forum comments during Blizzcon with several of us GLUED to our monitors watching giga.de broadcast embarrassingly pointless footage - watching the hordes (oh, pun? maybe ;)) of WoW fans clamor for more of their digital crack while we remain restless and disgruntled yet hopeful - this community has stuck it out through all of it. How many nay-saying trolls have we had to stomp to keep our dignity and the truth of the series at the forefront?Posted in: News
Every single crumb of hope we've seen we've made mountains out of - and now some of you want to downplay this? I find that ridiculous.
If there was ever a time to be excited about the Diablo franchise, NOW is the time. -

Another Surfergirl update.
Again, disclaimer remains: this is not gospel. It's industry insider speculation. It may be incorrect, but I do hold firm that SG is a pretty solid source overall.
If it's correct it is, indeed, congruent with the idea of a WWI announcement. If they are playing the anniversary tip as well, then I think we're all in for a treat.
Otherwise, Blizzard will just bone us like they have in the past. Whoa, was that some pessimism creeping into my voice? How dare me. -

Aug 3, 2007TheOctagon posted a message on Diablo3.com Attending BlizzconAlright - let's see here. It appears as though Blizzard announced SC2 during the opening cermonies..Posted in: News

Even though there is no "new product announcement" title in there - it is not by any means farfetched to see them unveil a product during the first hour.
And the plug the SHIT out of it for the next 48 hours.
That's just good marketing.
And since Blizz is a pretty secretive company, I wouldn't put it past them. Yes, I am all too optimistic at this point, but let's not rule this possibility out. -
Aug 2, 2007TheOctagon posted a message on Diablo3.com Attending BlizzconNo one really knows how long each of the performers are going to be on for.Posted in: News
Chances are VGL and L70ETC will be splitting stage time and Jay Mohr might get some time to warm up with some comedy, but I don't know if they each have enough time to fill that block entirely.
How long does it take to show a cool trailer and make a small, teaser announcement right? We're not expecting a full-blown Diablo Q&A session, just something that says we're on the right track.
At least that's what I'm hoping - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

I believe it was well known for some time now that Blizzard intended to release an early expansion for WoW following Burning Crusade.
Now we have almost definite confirmation - please refer to blizzplanet.com for the news updates as they are an officially sanctioned fansite.
As for Diablo hopefuls, there is no reason to rule it out.
We know SC2 is in production, we know WoW is getting an expansion soon (called Wrath of the Lich King) but we are unsure as to what this third title may be.
We also do not have confirmation that they will unveil anything within the next two days at Blizzcon.
These are the facts. I like facts. But as I posted in the D3.com attending BlizzCon thread - Blizzard announced SC2 in the opening ceremonies of WWI in Korea. Also, seeing as how they moved the "Expanded Universe" session to directly following the opening ceremony, I believe they wanted to make sure to have Richard Knaak on hand to discuss the plot details to some extent. They have the two most highly influential creative minds at Blizzard scheduled to hold a panel immediately following a slot of time that they have been known to unleash new projects during.
Am I connecting the dots or coloring outside the lines?
You be the judge.

So conclusively, sons of the storm are a group of artists from Blizzard, if you note some of their work has even recently been featured on the Blizz site (the new SC stuff e.g. Protoss Zealot) so it doesn't surprise me at all that this artist created that Diablo head for the new banner.
It also inspires me to think that these are some of the artists on the creative development team for the new Diablo title.
If you also check the galleries under the Diablo sections (at the end for all the artsits) you'll notice some of the artwork from the game manuals, meaning if these guys are still Blizz employees they still have part of the Diablo IP and could be a part of the process.
Just more excitement for me

Am I getting this right?
And they'll be at blizzcon, presumably to showcase their artistry?
No, wait, these guys are blizzard employees.
Metzen = Chris Metzen?
Ok, yes, definitively these guys are Blizzard artists with a personal portfolio page here. Check out their galleries - they are downright awesome to be frank.

Ok, if I'm just dreaming that someone asked it's no big deal, but I just read over at G4 that they will be covering the event. I'm not 100% certain it's going to be like a marathon thing, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were broadcasting some spots from the floor and whatnot.

Ok ok I know the whole "links to Blizz" home page nonsense is hardly an indication. But WTF. Honestly, Diablo Chaos?
We're onto something....
Oh, and that was the first one I thought of ... subsequent diablo + word combos didn't work. Try it yourself.

I don't think the argument that there've been no prior leaks about Diablo's next game holds any water.
Also, the Diablo franchise is the oldest pure franchise that hasn't seen its next iteration. What I mean is that Warcraft made a genre switch so I don't necessarily count WoW as part of the lineage of WC3 in that it is not an RTS.
SC got its facelift and those fans are going apeshit.
Diablo needs to see its day. I honestly don't think Blizzard is a stupid company - there has been buzz, albeit no confirmed leaks, but buzz nonetheless on all the major game sites leading up to Blizzcon. Diablo is on the tip of everyone's tongue. Blue has to see this, and if they hadn't planned on unleashing this project sometime in the near future (read: year to year and a half) they know they'll lose their Diablo fanbase.
I'm expecting at least an un-narrated trailor to close the convention this weekend.

Not news - not suprising - not even groundbreaking. Just thought it nice to add to the discussion.

I wouldn't want a game where I had to pay more real money for elite items. That's just not fun - that crosses the boundary of where games and real life meet. If I'm working my real job to make real money for an in-game item, I've suddenly turned my life into a video game or at least developed an unhealthy obsession.
It's strictly a personal opinion, but I couldn't justify that type of expenditure.
