posted a message on Diablo II Patch 1.13- More Delays, Hopefully a Brighter Future
In spite of the overbearing continued responses from fans all over the web, any news on the patch announced last spring was as commonplace as hamsters on Pluto. Today, we have finally gotten an update, but it might not be one that many will enjoy to see:

    Official Blizzard Quote:

The Diablo II 1.13 patch is on temporary hold while we investigate potential impact on the Battle.net service. As we moved closer to launching the patch concerns grew that an increase in the player stash size (a feature in the patch) could compromise the Diablo II Battle.net service. The hardware and configuration could potentially not handle the increased stash size gracefully under heavy load. Currently we?re investigating potential impact as it is one of the larger content features in the patch and we?re hoping it can remain a part of the release. If it does have to be removed it will require additional time to remove it, generate new patches, and test, which will add time before we can go live on the PTR.

We?re hoping to have our diagnostics and a final decision on how we?ll be moving forward decided by early next week and we?ll have an update for you at that time.

    The patch has been delayed.

    Again.

On the bright side, it looks like the increased inventory size previously suggested (see Patch 1.13: Larger Inventory for Diablo II) is planned to stay, although it is the cause of the delay. It also seems that a sincere promise on progress will be made next week- whether or not this will mean anything with regard to how they have handled the relaying of information and the keeping of promises in the past is yet to be seen (see WCIII Patch is Up- Diablo II Patch 1.13 Soon to Follow?).

    UPDATE (10/01/09):

It would seem that Bashiok is on a reply spree for 1.13 today. It is confirmed that two of the three top requests for patch 1.13 will not be met:

    Official Blizzard Quote:

Higher resolution, which we unfortunately just can't do because it would fundamentally change the game and require a huge development investment to have the game/servers spawn enemies farther out, have them aggro from farther out, and even then it increases travel time to the player... it's just a mess. Apparently increasing the resolution in LoD was this gigantic issue so I think the idea of increasing it again makes some of the old time programmers want to curl up in a fetal position.

And new end game content, which we do want to continue adding, but just wasn't possible for this patch.

So far, the following has been confirmed:

    1. Increased stash size, which is the cause of the current delay as they take hardware and server considerations in to thought, is so far essentially confirmed.
    2. No increased resolution- it would require "fundamental change" to the game and would have to account for faster player traveling issues (like being able to Teleport or Jump farther), spawning monsters on a larger scale around the player, and monster aggro would have to be taken in to account.
    3. No new end-game content. Bashiok noted that with this patch it would not be possible to add it, although there was no inkling of whether or not it would or would not be included with any future patch.
Thanks goes to D3luxe for finding this first (see his thread here).

    UPDATE (10/14/09):

    Official Blizzard Quote:

    Update - 10/14

The decision on whether or not to include the enlarged stash size has been slightly delayed. As mentioned previously it would require some additional weeks of development and would remove one of the most requested features were we unable to include it. If it were to be included the concern is that it could render Diablo II unplayable, and repairing the issue after the fact would draw heavily on development resources. Which is also something we obviously want to avoid.

We hope to be able to reach a conclusion and decision soon on the future of the 1.13 patch, and we?ll keep you updated as it develops.

No real news, just a rehashing of the previous statement made a week ago, except now he is not alluding to a dated announcement.

posted a message on In response to FORUM RULE ARE A JOKE
The policies on flaming and trolling do not in any way limit opinions. They only limit how they are represented.

    For instance:

    LOL stfu nub GTFO LOlZLZLoL!!Z!11!
    Flame.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about. You're wrong. You must be some immature brat who sits in his basement all day.
    Trolling.

I disagree on [topic] because of these reasons [reasons].
Acceptable unless said reasons are trolling or flaming.

Opinions are not squelched. You are perfectly within your rights to disagree or agree with anything so long as how you say it fits within the forum rules. The only things we limit discussion-wise are things that minors are not legally supposed to see/be in to.

At the same time, when you registered for this site, however, you agreed to the following part EULA:

By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws.

The owners of DiabloFans.com reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason.
So, although you have the privilege to discuss, your privilege of posting here is provided free of charge, so long as you obey any laws that may be applicable to you in a specific region or the place the data is stored and the precepts that we, as the staff, are allowed to set (covered under the latter clause) to maintain a civil, friendly, productive, and cohesive social environment.

Now, what does this mean for you and how we will respond to objections? We will not squelch any disagreement so long as it abides by the forum rules (which do not limit opinion but how it is represented). Now, if you want the most efficacious thread, a bit of cordiality and respect can go a long way, not only with staff but with other members, as well. If you haven't learned this already, you might do very poorly in the real world.

(For instance, calling the forum rules we have labored for years to create- yes, years, often including month-long heated arguments in the staff forums- a joke will not bode well for the impression that would be most effective.)

posted a message on @ Wow haters, regarding its influence
Well, unfortunately it appears that many users posting in this thread decided not to heed my warning. The thread will now be closed for an extreme number of violations of the following rules:

    Quote from Revised Rules - July 19, 2009 »
    1A - Flaming

'Flaming' refers to any deliberate attempt to insult or demean other users, staff, people, or groups of people (on or off the boards). This includes racial, sexual, and religious slurs as well as derogatory statements regarding people of lesser fortune / ability. Flame can be contained in posts, user titles, thread titles, names, avatars, signatures, private messages, and the reputation system (among others). Outside the forum is your business. Anything on the forums is our business, and we will deal with it accordingly.

Max Punishment: Permanent Ban (Dependent On Severity)

    1B - Trolling

'Trolling' refers to any deliberate attempt at provoking argument or flame. It may, at times, also pertain to an easily-misconstrued statement that, based on previous experience, is likely to lead to argument or flame. This decision will be made on staff discretion. Deliberately posting controversial viewpoints with the intent of inciting conflict is a serious offense and will be treated as such.

Max Punishment: Permanent Ban (Dependent On Severity)

    1C - Arguing

'Arguing' is not Debate. The two are different, and it is important to understand the difference between them. Debate is the free discussion of numerous differing opinions employing the use of logic, evidence, and civil disagreement. Arguing is a conflict between numerous differing opinions wrought with illogical and/or irrelevant exchange, a lack of proper evidence, and innapropriate or impolite animosity. The difference is usually very clear but, in a case that proves hard to distinguish, a decision will be made at staff discretion.

Max Punishment: Permanent Ban (Dependent On Severity)

    1D - Spam

'Spam' refers to any posts in a thread (or any thread) that is or contains unsolicited or irrelevant material including, but not limited to; advertisements, links un-related to the thread topic, youtube videos (not directly related to Diablo or another topic at-hand), internet memes, random gibberish, double posts, and single-word / single-image posts. Please do not respond to spam posts. If you wish to help cut down on forum spam, report the post instead and let the staff take care of it appropriately.

Max Punishment: Permanent Ban (Dependent On Infraction)

    1E - Off Topic

The term 'Off Topic' is used to refer to posts with very little to no relevancy to the thread's original subject or question. If you feel the need to discuss a new topic, create a new thread (or, alternatively, search to see if you can locate and existing thread on the same subject).

Max Punishment: Infraction, Deletion of Post (Dependent On Number of Infractions)

    3B - Etiquette

The Administrators and Moderators of this site are here to maintain peace and order. As the enforcers of the rules that protect and guide the users of the forums, they expect a reasonable amount of respect and cooperation on your part. It should be expected that staff decisions will be accepted and followed. Should there be a conflict involving one or more of the staff, please bring it up with other and/or more senior staff members. Please do this politely and privately. Posting complaints about the staff or their decisions in the main forum body is not permitted, to ensure the dignity and fairness to all parties involved. This said, we can't be everywhere all the time, so we appreciate any help you can give us. If you see someone breaking a rule, use the Report Post button to let us know about it.

Max Punishment: Permanent Ban (Dependent On Infraction)

If anyone has any questions, please refer to the board rules, located here or at the top of every thread listing of every forum, and then please PM myself or another moderator or administrator and we will be happy to help you in any way that we can, so long as the PM is polite, respectful, coherent, and non-inflammatory.

To whom it may apply, please grow up.

    Scornfully,
    Seth

posted a message on Knights of the Burning Blade - Story Thread
The blazing orange sphere of the sun began to sink below the cloud level of a sky quickening to dusk. The clouds were a mix of dark, cold hues contrasted starkly with the iridescent flaming outline cast on them from the setting sun.

Thick masses of pines twisted with small vines and shrubs were left behind as the wagon and the rest of the Knights of the Burning Blade entered Desolation, a humble but (previously) growing town of thatched roofs and stone walls, all bearing previous traces of fine ivy playing along the grooves and cracks and small wildflowers bursting through the scattered bits of foliage that crowded between masses of barrels, crates, wagon wheels, and farming equipment.

High pillars of smoke held up the blazing sky, as if preventing the heavens from crashing to Sanctuary and blotting out all the remainders of the bloody slaughter and destruction of the hamlet. Sinking window frames had been smashed through, scorch marks bordering their absence, partially-dried blood stained the walls and padded, earthen roads. The nature-made rooftops were occasionally missing whole chunks of material, some were even still smoldering in leu of the attack.

Bits of ash floated on a slight breeze putrid with the distinct and loathsome aroma of death. About the base of the demolished buildings were the mangled and oddly-bent remains of men (scarcely), women, and children who had remained behind in the hour of war, perhaps for their own futile and ignorant protection.

Buliwyf and Jamis, as well as a few others, headed toward a small hillock occupied by the only still-inhabitable structure left in Tappas, a huge, ancient, stone-block church that rose with the columns of smoke, emissary of mortal man against the inevitibility of death and loss. A man was crumpled against the wall adjoining the front door, a heavyset wooden portal, beaten and tired. He mumbled a few words to Buliwyf before falling to sleep eternal.

As Buliwyf stood back to his feet, Mordwythe could distinctly make out the man's detesting and anger-laden voice struggle to allow the words to form from his mouth. "They played us all for fools. Riddia will pay for this!"

It makes one wonder, Mordwythe thought, how mankind can allow itself to consume itself when we stand alone against our mortal weakness and in the face of the eternal demons and angels of old. How could this have happened? How could we have let the Riddians pass us by without notice to wreak havoc against the weak and helpless?

The thought was, admittedly, less of a caring so much as a statement of disbelief. Mordwythe had never been particularly fond of his parents in any way, although they had been, he supposed, homely enough. Even of his master Drognan he had never felt a fondness. Perhaps that emptiness was his payment for his ambition.

He shuffled his boot against a frail, lifeless, and bloody arm of a small child. So many futures, so many hopes... The progression of mankind is once more stymied.

He dusted bits of ash and nature from his robe and headed for the church.

posted a message on Gamescon Reveals Desert and More!
Well, the BlizzCon starts in roughly two days, and I am glad to see how excited everyone is getting about this pending Blizzard event. This year's is planned to be bigger and better than ever before, but it looks like fans have gotten a bit of a taste of what will come before it has even started in the form of the Gamescon that transpired in Germany (see here for the announcement about this event).

Just looking at some of the reports linked to by fans here, I've seen that there is a good bit of information that was released at the Gamescon, and though this report may not cover all of it, it will hopefully "wet your whistle", as they say around here, for the pleasures BlizzCon '09 is sure to bring.

A report at Kotaku by Michael McWhertor (here) gives a nice run-down of what the writer experienced with a demo play of Diablo III at the Gamescon. It would seem that, while there were no additional characters able to be played besides the already-announced Barbarian, Wizard, and Witch Doctor, demo players were able to pick a character and start off in the new and previously-not-covered desert area, Sundered Pass, which apparently was very reminiscent of the deserts of Lut Gholein in Diablo II. As for how awesomely-desertesque this area was, well, perhaps Michael said it better than I could:

    Quote from name="Michael McWhertor" »
Of course, the deserts in Diablo III look far better than those featured in the previous game, with visible winds carrying clouds of sand across the plains, dust storms kicking up around us. The land is similarly populated with tiny desert creatures, snakes and insects that get trampled underfoot.

Did you see that last little sentence? More squish-ables! Hurray!

Furthermore, he went on to elaborate that one of the main quest of this area of Diablo III was issued by Asheara to head to a town called Alcarnus and see what the raving is all about, perhaps related, quite obviously, again, to the Lord of Terror's return to Sanctuary. Whether or not this Asheara is related to or is, in fact, the same as the Asheara of Diablo II's Act III was not revealed (you can read more about the Asheara of Diablo II here in our Wiki).

However, it would seem that they never actually reached this precipice of the desert area's quest, but instead stumbled upon several side quests that, from the limited input we can gather, was quite entertaining, involving a certain Husam and his bounty:

    Quote from name="Michael McWhertor" »
...we ran into a few side quests. One sent us after the bounty of a man named Husam. The price on his head was high, so we took his head. It really only took one good whack from the maces we were dual-wielding. After some backtalk from Husam, we bludgeoned him until his head popped off.

And, even more, later in his write-up he mentions a few more of the quests:

    Quote from Michael McWhertor »
The demo offered a few side quests on our way to Alcarnus. We ran into a "Crazed Miner," who offered us the quest, "A Miner's Gold." All we had to do was defend the miner while he raised a treasure chest via a pulley system. When he started, swarms of Fallen came after him. If we were successful in defending the miner from the swarm, we'd get half the gold. It really wasn't a challenge for the Barbarian, as Ground Stomp made that defense quest a simple task.

To me it seems that this last one, "A Miner's Gold", will be fallible. Meaning, you can fail it if you do not accomplish the required ends. This could be a good turn in the questing system for the Diablo series, since in Diablo II and Diablo I I believe that the only way you failed a quest was if you died doing it, at which point you would just come back from the dead and start again on it. This new way of handling quests, if my assumptions are correct, would provide a far heavier challenge than the previous installments did.

He then elaborated on the new inventory system some more, a 28-slot backpack called, officially, the Adventurer's Backpack (how creative). Items will react similarly to many new games, specifically MMO's come to mind (I remember this function in Runes of Magic):

    Quote from name="Michael McWhertor" »
...the newest version is far more streamlined. When hovering over unequipped items in your inventory, you'll see a pop up window with that item's vital statistics and the item you currently have equipped in that slot.

And there we have it, more evidence of developers mixing in the best of the old with the best of the new- being able to compare items without having to dance your mouse pointer around the screen between various items and instead being able to to it instantaneously by simply hovering your mouse over one item and seeing it compared against your current equipment. That seems like a welcome and useful change to Diablo II's archaic equipment system.

Now, of what he meant by this, I am not quite so sure:

    Quote from name="Michael McWhertor" »
That made it a lot easier to see if the leather pants we picked up at one point were better than the "lucky" leather pants we started out with. They were. A right click equipped them, draining our character's luck, but upping her armor.

This could literally mean that we have a new (or renamed) stat or modifier called "luck" or "lucky". I have no idea what it would do, and it could be very well that he was just being sarcastic here or something. If anyone has any better ideas on that, please save my skin and post them.

It appears, if it was that I missed this in previous declarations, that skills will once again be hotkey-able to the number row, as evidenced by this short splurge on the Barbarian's skill usage, and that Battle Cry, as in Diablo II, will be a party-boosting skill as well as a player-boosting one:

    Quote from name="Michael Whertor" »
We were also equipped with two Barbarian skills, Ground Stomp and Battle Cry. The former was hot-keyed to the "2" and, when enabled, stunned everything around the Barbarian. Helpful, when Fallen are surrounding you and Fallen Shamen are tossing fireballs your way. The Battle Cry, on the "1" key, increased our armor class temporarily. If we were playing a multiplayer game, that Battle Cry effect would have been passed on to our party members. But we were doing this quest solo.

There was also a short heads-up on a few of the new monsters to come with this new desert area:

    Quote from Michael McWhertor »
surrounded by Fallen and Sand Wasps. Those Sand Wasps really suck, by the way, ejecting a quartet of mini-Wasps at our hero. Nasty.

We ran into a few other nasty things in the desert, the most annoying of which was the Desert Dervish, a spinning tornado of a beast with a strong knock-back attack.

From there, he made his closing comments, which should hopefully give some of you more faith in the unfinished game:

    Quote from name="Michael McWhertor" »
From graphics to gameplay to interface adjustments, Blizzard seems to have delivered with Diablo III. The game looks fantastic, dripping with atmospheric detail and gorgeous visual effects. But honestly, it's the user interface changes that are most exciting. Blizzard has made the process of looting and equipping much more efficient, letting the player focus on the action.

Whether or not all of that is true, though, remains to be seen until we all have our own hands on the game.

To wrap this up, you can see some of the screen shots taken during the event here: http://www.diablo-3.net/gamescom-gallerie (thanks to popez), and here are two YouTube videos (compliments of Mackan and Tech):

If you happen to stumble across any of those lovely gentlemen (or ladies), please be sure to give them a good positive rep point for some truly awesome finds! I know I will. And, Bashiok is providing a thread on the Battle.net forums (viewed via our Developer Tracker here) with links to reviews about the Gamescon coverage, so keep checking that around the clock today for even more articles on this wonderful event.

You can see the original thread created by m0n0x1d3 here with many good information contributions by other posters.

posted a message on Skill Respecs Confirmed for D2
    Quote from "nickm83" »
Then how else do you beat the game without some degree of rushing?

Rushing is taking advantage of the game in unintended ways.

If your not doing every quest and searching every side area,

I never said you had to do every single quest, but okay. If the game was designed better, then the quests should be advantageous or fun enough to make you want to do them. Since they obviously weren't made that way, respeccing should be an option to avoid having to do this kind of crap all over again when you don't really want to, or you wouldn't be rushing (skipping huge parts of the game, long series of quests or areas).

    your rushing,

No, my definition of rushing is skipping through large parts of the game (quests and/or areas) using glitches., or things that are not supposed to happen in the game which should be patched, if you really want to know.

therefore your not playing the game as it was designed according to your logic.

    Nice extreme there.

And you said my point was irrelevant.

Want to know why? Because I'm doing exactly what you're doing to everyone with a fair argument. I'm ignoring your good points.

Respecs are going to kill the game.

Right. If there was some way of betting you on it with the forum, I would gladly do it, because that is a lie.

I see people in the other thread listed a lot of the same valid reasons I listed in this thread,

Yes, and people that are appreciative of this type of upgrade in some form have managed to counter every one of them.

yet the only support still remains QQ why should I have to remake a character I screwed up on.

Acutally, there were way more, but, as I said, there's no point in rehashing the arguments to you because you are blind to anything you cannot accept.

This isnt D2, this is Pokeland!

Where's that? A place where they play Polka all the time? That's not even an argument, you're just making fun of other people's ideals. The only reason you would be winning anyone over with any of your arguments is because of personal attacks.
