• published the article Blizzard Reveals Patch 1.13's Delayer
In reply to the weeks-long rabid desires of Diablo fans everywhere, Bashiok has posted on the Battle.net board about the long-anticipated and prolonged release of patch 1.13:

"Many of you are wondering what's up with the patch and the ladder reset. While I've sprinkled some information around, it's about time it was all mashed up in one easy-to-read location.

    The Story -
Once upon a time our internal legacy development teams wanted to put some much needed love into Diablo II. Diablo II doesn't have tournaments with millions of dollars swirling about them, so it generally took a back seat to the patch development time of our other legacy titles. But one day the planets aligned, and it was finally time to give the old girl a new coat of paint and break a bottle of champagne over her bow with the release of a patch. This went well. Meetings were held, the community was involved and polled, and an extremely long list of ideas and changes was created. That list was then cut down to changes felt to be either necessary changes, or easily implemented to ensure development time was efficient. This also went well.

Not long after, the alarm bells sounded. The patch was progressing quickly, and the release was potentially imminent. Early on it was decided, and somewhat of a no-brainer, that a ladder reset with coincide with the patch release. With the patch progressing well, a potential release of two weeks was estimated, and as always this is the exact amount of forewarning given to players and the community before a ladder reset. An announcement was made quickly and immediately to ensure a full two week notice was given. There are many reasons for this standard two-week notice, not the least of which is that most players don't understand the meaning of ladder and non-ladder, and how a reset affects their characters. Following any reset our support departments are flooded with issues related to the change of their characters, so we attempt to inform beforehand and avoid any unnecessary confusion.

This was all well and good, the community was excited, and the developers were having fun and enjoying being able to work on Diablo II again. Then, as it tends to do, reality struck. (http://forums.battle.net/thread.html?topicId=16888549346&sid=3000) Work had to be swiftly and immediately realigned and has and continues to be focused on addressing issues for a different title to resolve a very serious issue.

    The Now -
The Warcraft III patch is now on the Public Test Realm (PTR) and testing is progressing. Once that patch is released work can shift back to Diablo II and the 1.13 patch, and we'll be working to getting that patch up on its own PTR as soon as possible. This could be a matter of weeks. Once it's up and in a testing state for all of you, it's then going to be a matter of ensuring the features are good and it's a solid patch. The more people we have testing the patch and providing valid feedback, the better the patch will be, and hopefully the quicker it will be released. So that's my challenge to you. You've been waiting a long time, you want an awesome patch, you want a reset. To get all that, we need good solid testing and feedback, reproduction steps for bugs, detailed descriptions of issues or errors, etc. So once this goes live on the PTR, I expect some crazed-youruinedtheeconomy-testing."
    (Source.)

As previously predicted here, the other higher priority issue that was prolonging work on the patch was, indeed, the Warcraft III patch, which is now entering its final testing stage. As noted, Bashiok has said that we will most likely be seeing Diablo II's patch in a PTR (Public Testing Realm) in as little as a few weeks- a short amount of time in light of how long we have been waiting. Whether this can be trusted like his previous post about the patch being released as early as the end of April is yet to be proven.

On a similar note, suspicion continues to rise among fans as a previously-held stickied thread by Bashiok on the official Diablo II forum on the Battle.net board here was unstickied- one that was clearly labeled by Bashiok as the official patch information thread. Whether this will doll out to become a fact of significance only time will tell.

Credit goes to Lethal_Weapon and Variance for the tip-offs- be sure to give the two some rep points if you get the chance. Also, necronergal has another thread for this in the Diablo II forum here.

For some time since the announcement of patch 1.13 for Diablo II in late April, we have heard scant nothing of progress and have seldom had an update. Now Bashiok, a Blizzard representative on their Battle.net online board, has replied to the inquiry of a poster about the progress of the patch:

    Quote from "Bashiok" »
Work on the patch was put on hold for a while due to higher priority issues, but it commences, and it is nearing.

    (Source.)

The reply is short and to the point, which is more than we can say of many of Blizzard's revelations. Apparently, the patch had been put on hold in light of more pressing matters, but now they're back in business and its release is imminent.

I, myself, am somewhat dissappointed in their lack of an announcement when they suspended work on it, something many had suspected in Diablo-based forums around the internet. However, now that we have a definite confirmation of its progress, something that would have been nice a month or two ago, I can say that some of that is relieved.

Being one of the very few responses from Bashiok of late, this reply may be something of consequence. Can we be expecting the patch before the month of June is out? Many ladder resets and a few patches have been released in the month of June, so this only continues to add to the speculation.

Credit goes out to pvp_fire for PMing me about this little tidbit. Hand the man a rep point if you have a moment :)

    EDIT~

Some speculation about the "higher priority" that has been going around is that they just released their 1.23b beta Warcraft III patch yesterday on their servers. This may, in fact, be what Bashiok had been alluding to.

As per an interview with MedievalDragon a few days ago on BlizzPlanet.com, it can be nearly definitively discerned that Battle.net 2.0, as fans and users have dubbed the impending new in-game interface of the Battle.net online client, is, in fact, subscription fee-free.

The kick line was apparently delivered from a speech file from TeamLiquid, which said the following:

    Quote from "Blizzard" »
what I will say is that a player who goes to retail and buys the Starcraft 2 box at retail will have the full Starcraft 2 game included in the box and they will have the ability to play on battlenet with no additional fee.

It shouldn't be much of a stretch to say this same feature extends to Diablo III, as both Starcraft II and Diablo III will be running on the same Battle.net. Also, as noted by many over the years, Battle.net has always been and still is a free gift from Blizzard.

However, it may still be possible that complimentary features, like name changes, may still be royalty services that require a little moola. That might be a small price to pay for the ultimate ARPG gaming experience available for free play.

This was actually tipped-off to me on June 1 I believe, but I neglected to post it until now. Sorry about that. All the credit goes to Svetopolk who found it first. The first thread on this article can be found here. Pop him some rep points if any of you get the chance, he deserves for finding this for our community as well as dealing with bothersome staff members, like myself.

Could this be a definitive declaration that Battle.net will be free for Diablo III as well? Would players be willing to pay for extended services if they are implemented? Does this increase the appeal of buying and playing Diablo III on Battle.net for fans?

  • published the article Diablo III Bestiary Update- Return of the Fallen!
As first noted here on Diablofans by Pjanoo, the Fallen Ones of Diablo II (you can read more about them here in our Wiki) have returned for Diablo III! I'm sure many, if not all of you are familiar with the impish little devils - running away the instant one of their comrades have fallen. And I'm sure we can all recall fighting their leader in Act I, Rakanishu, whose name they chant incessantly, and probably having been slain, ourselves, at some point by his Lightning Enchantment.

Well, as per a post in our Dev Tracker, the creatures have made their official comeback:

    Quote from Bashiok »
"The Diablo III bestiary has been updated with a demon family you may recognize - The Fallen Ones!

"When unleashed upon our realm by their master, Azmodan, these impish terrors display a tendency to swarm like flesh-hungry locusts, and they have been known to tear apart a sleeping village in minutes. Small of stature and simian in appearance, these creatures possess surprising strength and unnatural agility. Other than feasting on human flesh, the only act that gives these unspeakable horrors pleasure is breeding; hence the tendency to encounter them in large packs."

Visit http://www.Diablo3.com for the full bestiary update, including concept art, screen shots, and video!"
There are now 5 different kinds of Fallen Ones:
Imps - These are the commonest of the fallen family of demons. They are the stereotypical fallen ones in look and behavior: small, red, swarming, bloodthirsty, and cowardly.

Shaman - Fallen shaman priests lead camps of fallen. I have also heard it rumored that they possess the ability to raise imps from the dead!

Lunatic - These enraged, oversized fallen creatures are bloated seemingly to the point of bursting, an impression buttressed by the fact that these insane demons rush their intended victims and then stab themselves until they explode. A more fitting name could not be found for these maniacal beings.

Overseer - The fallen overseer drives his smaller impish charges into a frenzy with his ape-like leaping and growling. An overseer among a group of fallen is a dangerous thing, as the cowardice that usually characterizes them is overwhelmed by fear of their much larger brethren.

Hounds - These slobbering abominations are commonly found among groups of the fallen and are utilized as guard animals, beasts of burden, or even food by their demonic masters. These beasts are loyal to a fault, regardless of the abuse heaped upon them.
You can see their glorious new page on the official Diablo III site here: http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/world/bestiary/thefallen.xml. There's tons of new artwork and lore crammed in there- I'd encourage everyone to check it out!

How does everyone feel about these things returning in the world of Diablo again? It does make sense since there were so many of them in Diablo II. I'd wager they'll probably multiply like bunnies. Thoughts? Comments?

(And I'd pass a rep point or two to Pjanoo for posting this first!)

  • published the article Diablo II, Battle.net, and Cheating- An Iron Fist or Empty Promise?
Today, Blizzard has recently posted on the online client for Diablo II a blatant charge against cheaters and hackers of all types and sizes, promising higher standards and a scrutiny to out-do what in years past has been nothing but a laughable, vague shell of enforcement:

    Quote from Blizzard »
    Wednesday, May 20, 2009
Blizzard Entertainment feels very strongly about cheating over Battle.net. We Believe that multiplayer cheats and hacks undermine the basic rules of fair play and weaken ansy sense of true competition and online gaming enjoyment. We would like to remind everybody that the use of any third-party software in conjunction with the game to modify Battle.net and/or change game play may result in account closures and a possible suspension of access to Battle.net. Third-party software may include, but is not limited to any program that allows you to run multiple instances of the game at the same time, cheats, hacks, and/or bots. To continue our agressive stance on cheats/hacks, we will be monitoring Custom games as well as Ladder games on Battle.net.

Some important questions arise from this. In light of the recent announcement of patch 1.13 for Diablo II and the fact that one of the main focuses of the patch is player input, something on the top of every player's mind is Battle.net cheating, hacking, and security. For many years, most of us have done nothing but laugh at Battle.net and Blizzard's meager attempts at establishing any form of control over their free internet play client. Now, it seems, things may be taking a turn for the better.

Does anyone believe that this may, in fact, be something more than an announcement in light of current goings-on? Could something of value in this respect be coming with the impending patch 1.13?

It would make a lot of sense, seeing as Blizzard has announced also that the patch would be tested on a private testing realm:

    Quote from "Bashiok »
Some exciting news - and it also may be some comfort - due to the types of changes we're making we will be offering the Diablo II 1.13 patch for testing and feedback on a [color=red]test realm[/color'] before its release. We'll have more information about how you'll be able to help test it in the coming weeks.

    (Source: http://www.diablofans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18744.)

Something of this nature would be best done in such a way, especially if they are wanting to clean up players' acts on Diablo II and want to effectively cover as much ground as possible to stop hacking and cheating.

What are everyone else's thoughts on this? Could this really be Blizzard taking the first real stance in their fight against cheaters in nearly a decade or is this just another blast of hot air? Will this be something to be implemented in patch 1.13?

  • published the article The Unannounced MMO
In a recent news cast at Shack News, it's been absolutely confirmed that the new, unannounced MMO in development by the World of Warcraft team is not in any way related to any of the current three Blizzard franchises:

    Quote from Nick Breckon »
The unannounced MMO in development by World of Warcraft creative studio Blizzard will not be based on one of its established franchises, a representative iterated today.
"We've already stated it'll be a brand new franchise, which means the lore, art, and game play are being developed entirely from scratch," said Blizzard community manager Zarhym on the World of Warcraft forums, in a post noticed by Worldofwar.net

Zerhym referred to the new MMO as a "shell of a game thus far." Blizzard has previously said that the title is being developed using the World of Warcraft engine for testing purposes.

"It's an overwhelming process, but a process through which we excel," added Zerhym. "Our track record supports this."
So, for any of you who were hoping for World of Sanctuary (the pet name we've all given to a hypothetical MMO installment in the Diablo series), this won't be it.

While not particularly Diablo-related, it is in Blizzard's realm. I'm curious to see what will come out of this MMO- if it will be a reliving of WoW or something new and fresh. I wouldn't put it past Blizzard to make good on this opportunity for an MMO with better graphics, better questing, and just about anything else.

They've also explicitly stated some things that they are going to be working on with the new project- particularly the lore of whatever game this might be, artwork, and gameplay. It will be interesting to see how they are going to redo the age-old MMO gameplay style.

    Thoughts?

As first reported by one of our own users, sssupply, here, Bashiok has recently replied to a thread on the Battle.net Diablo II General forum regarding information on patch 1.13:

It's coming along. We're still in the process of refining and testing the changes going into the patch. Work is progressing, we haven't stopped working on it or anything like that.

As far as information of what's being changed in the patch, almost anything we're working on now could be removed. Testing could deem any change unworkable and we'd have to remove it. By releasing any information on possible changes we'd be raising expectations that the change is guaranteed to make it in, no matter how many disclaimers we place on it. That said, one change we're planning is to increase the stash size to 12x10. As I said it is in no way a guaranteed change. Any number of reasons could mean it will not make it into the final patch. But enjoy the breadcrumb maybe?
Please note that he also said explicitly that it is not a guarantee! Don't get your hopes too high yet, folks!

Thoughts? Comments? I'd love more inventory space, personally. Cuts down on mules :D

Bashiok has recently revealed via the Battle.net forums (viewable as per our Blue Tracker here http://www.diablofans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18834) that synergies are most likely not going to happen:

    Quote from Bashiok »
Synergies aren't being planned for nor are they expected.

It's sort of a funny question, because broken down you're essentially asking "Are the skill trees in Diablo III going to be boring and require incentive to spend points in skills no one wants?"

Ideally the answer to that is no. Smiley
There are some other things going on too that make sure synergies even less of a necessity. Clear separation of active and passive skills, respecs, ... and MORE!

I personally felt that synergies fixed more than they broke but, as we all know, Diablo II has had a long history of bad balancing and cookie-cutter builds. Perhaps in light of how Diablo fans reacted to synergies in Diablo II, the Diablo III team is deciding against such an implementation.

This quote actually also led to some speculation by one of our own members here (http://www.diablofans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18838), DarkMagicc, about the viability of respeccing, if anyone wants to go and check that out.

I'd say we're actually getting a decent flow of updates if you know what to look for. Comments? Ideas? Trolling that I can delete to raise my moderation score?

As first reported here by one of our own users, there is not going to be a World Wide Invitational 2009. However, it seems that we will still have the privilege of a nice, big BlizzCon 2009, as per the following quote from http://davidluong.net/, a website owned by a Diablo III cinematic developer:

"BlizzCon 2009 has also been announced, bigger, and better than the previous, this round it will take up the entire Anaheim Convention center! August 21-22, save the dates! Tickets will be on sale soon, buy them fast, they go record breakingly quick. There will be no Worldwide Invitational this year, as it will be combined with Blizzcon, so there will be even bigger tournaments and competitions this year."
A special thanks goes out to minsc&boo for chancing upon this jewel and posting it on our forums!

Recently, in view of the imminent release of patch 1.13, and for some months, many users have been concerned about the legitimacy of a Diablo II patch since many are wanting only Diablo III, thinking that any work on Diablo II would push off the release of Diablo III. In a recent reply in our Dev Tracker (http://www.diablofans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18554), Bashiok noted that the legacy team behind patching and working on Diablo II is separate from Diablo III and will not affect the latter's release:

As noted by our own member rrock54 here, Bashiok has announced on the Battle.net forums that the new patch will be coming with a ladder reset, and he also said that it could all happen as early as the end of this April:

We're preparing for a Diablo II ladder reset to coincide with the release of the 1.13 patch that's currently in development. We don?t have a final release date for the patch yet, but we're providing early warning as a reset could occur as early as the end of April. We'll be providing updates with more certain dates once the patch is closer to release.

Please be aware that with a ladder reset all ladder characters are moved to non-ladder. This means that your characters will still be accessible but will no longer have access to ladder-only features and games. In order to play in the new ladder season after the reset you will need to make new ladder characters.

This thread will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
