I refuse to pay for FRAPS unless it's ABSOLUTELY necessary, but I'd like to start documenting some of my runs, as I think some may benefit from it.
What do you guys use to record?
I've tried CamStudio, but I couldnt get it to work for shit.. I've got a decent machine at home, so I'm not worried about it bogging down my computer, and I'd like to record in HD.
I used FRAPS for a long time, it's probably the most stable and records quickly. The downside is, of course, the large files sizes.
If you want something with smaller files sizes, try Bandicam. Trebis recommended it to me and it's been great for recording high quailty while keeping file size down. It does compression on the fly so if your system is fiarly good you shouldn't have a problem. it will record in any aspect ratio you tell it regardles of what your system is putting out and you can even record just segments of your screen if you want. The other great thing is it can record two audio streams so if you do editing in, say vagas, you can take the microphone audio and edit it sperately from the game audio. There should be a demo version on their website.
I have been recording for a while. I have been using Bandicam this whole time and I really like it. The reason I use it is because it saves the AVI as a smaller file which in turn yields quicker upload time.

Seconded, I like bandicam a lot. It has really good performance too. I was able to do full 1080p captures without any dropped frames or noticeable lag.
