lol that sounds over the top, how about a function where if someone tries starting a new thread and it has the same relevance to an already existing thread you cant create it, i.e " WD nerf" and " not sure about WD nerf" or any other variation of that sort, i dont think you should penalize people for wanting to create discussion after all this is a forum.
Something tells me it would be a huge time investment to scratch up code for this.
The problem is that a good majority of these random, duplicate threads are being created by people who used to 'just browse' these forums and now they're scrambling to get their hands on a beta key.
I would love too see the sites traffic history over the past few weeks compaired to the last few days.
I somewhat agree with the op. you do not have to start topic to post something constructive. I've yet to find the need to start any new topic and there are often enough threads that I can reply to. 40ish post is also not an unreasonable amount so If you really do want to start a topic that hasnt been started you can within 2-3 days. It will cut down on the amount of duplicate thread and spam on the forums.
PS i already got into betas so this is not a post to up my count =]

oh im sure the code would suck, but im sure these guys/girls are intelligent people, and without a doubt could do it, not saying they need to but just a suggestion
Forum conversations like this get me excited. My story is I have been accessing this site for along time without creating an account. Then I create an account almost two years back, make a few posts, and now when I want to contribute informative replies in forum post topics already made due to being on the verge of a Diablo 3 release date, I can't find my account information to save my life. So I go ahead and create a new one this morning which makes me look like a new member that joins just for the beta key contest.
I am one of the unfortunate few much like the few in this post that still don't have a beta key and have owned and contributed to beta invites with Blizzard games since the dawn of time. The beta key contests are random and thats the way it is. Do I hope to get an invite in this contest Diablofans is doing....sure. If I don't then I will continue to be part of this site to meet people and enhance my Diablo 3 gaming experience come release and beyond.
I didn't see any reason why new members need to make a brand new forum posts to even contribute into the beta contest. I might be one of the few that actually search for subject matter before making a forum post topic and even then, that is what moderators are for.
Sounds to me like another pooly designed beta key giveaway thing. Seen a whole bunch of them these past days. Most of these fansites just don't seem to care a lot about the userbase, new or old. Fansites just seem to be after increased traffic, ad revenue, bigger user numbers and whatnot. I speak as a new user, long time reader of news here but that had never read the forums before. I'm here for the keys only and probably will never return after the contest is over. This is why I'm doing my best not to disturb the content, creating topics and such. I'm just doing the bare minimum to be eligible and leave the house as tidy as possible for the real users of the forums. My advice to the site's admins: next time just design a better contest, preferably one that doesnt't affect your current loyal userbase.
Even a 10 post minimum would be sufficient. Like I said, many people register on impulse cause they want to create a thread. As far as regulating behavior, mods really can't do that. Or at least, usually people are gonna do whatever they want. Some people learn their lessons, but most don't even stick around long enough for it to even matter.
And yeah, overall we do have a lot less spam and flaming than there used to be. Before D3 was announced people didn't have that to occupy themselves. Of course, there were shitloads of D3 announcement conjecture threads and that definitely got annoying but it was nothing compared to the kind of duplicate threads we have no. Especially with all this nauseating beta crap. I mean, I've played the beta and I wish I could express just how underwhelming it is. I've tried anyway. People really, really aren't missing anything. Some may think that's just easy for me to say since I've played it. I've written a lot about how I feel about the beta though and I'm not gonna reiterate it all here.
Heh, my biggest concern from the start was the absolutely horrible spam that would arise. Now I simply ignore all topics that are questions. I really can't believe some people.
"What was your favorite class in Diablo 2"
"How do you feel about the rune changes"
"How do you feel about the skill changes"
"How do you feel about the Beta contests"
Really? From a quality perspective on a scale to 100 10 days ago Diablofans was 98 and now it's 15.
Things to learn for the next contests!
Nah, people keep attributing it to the beta contest. It was before then even. Just browse the D3 section at any given time. Look at older threads and newer threads in that section.
"Who is the first NPC you will talk to?"
"Will you go left or right when you first start the game? Discuss!"
"How many monsters will you kill in the first ten minutes of the game?"
"Do you think my mustache tickles women when I kiss them?"

Shit like that....
Ah yes, but! Back then moderators moderated such things! And now they simply don't have enough time distributing it among exploring the Beta and files, running the contests and just trying to hold on to the site so it doesn't lag off to oblivion. Not to mention most of the staff isn't on call as they aren't really paid for this. Sadly. :]
Well, back then Moderators had a rule list they could use to moderate such things. Do we even have a rule list for Moderators to enforce?
Anyway, as for the limit, people will spam other threads until they get to 10 or 50 or whatever and then they will make the useless threads. We tried the post limit thing (for avatars I think? Or was it signatures? I don't remember) a while back and it was just bad.
You are asking Siaynoq about 14k posts? What about your 6k+ count?
On topic: Perhaps not exactly a cheerful thought for some but... Isn't this rather a preview for when Diablo III gets released - heh - and we'll have a flood of newcomers then, anyway? If a person can't adapt with having the DF community becoming much larger (and less experienced accordingly), then... I don't know if anything could satisfy said person.

That's your standard for satisfaction? Whether one can adapt to the DF community becoming much larger (and less experienced accordingly)?
Adaptation is fine and good. But you don't have to accept everything that sucks purely on the tenets of adaptation. What was proposed as a solution is perfectly sensible. Merely deny new users the ability to post new threads unless they've achieved a certain number of posts. Even as low as 10 or 20 would make a huge difference.

I didn't say it was a "be-all, end-all" for satisfaction. I was only trying to point out that it plays a part in determining a web user's experience and I hadn't seen anyone mention that.
I also did not mean to come across as "well, surrender and get used to it". Rather, that there needs to be some give and take as this website is determining -- or careening into, take your pick -- its direction. I think this sort of discussion is a necessary debate, and perhaps we could use more of in the future.
Well I think a lot of people have gotten used to things just fine. And putting this restriction on new users would simply improve things. The D3 discussion area would become a lot less inundated since that's where almost all new users post their threads. Accepting the fact that we're likely to get a flood of newcomers at the release of D3, as you've stated, is all the more reason to implement this kind of measure.
I have a feeling the traffic on the site may drop considerably once the game is out. Not just because we'll all be off playing the game, but also because you don't need to theorycraft when you've got the practicalcraft at your fingertips. I could be way off, but one thing's for sure all the people here simply for the contest will be gone.
I originally began posting for the contest but have been here a very long time lurking. Never created my own thread though.
Anyways, seems to be an awful lot of hate. This is one of the most civil general discussion forums I've been to.

I didn't reply because I had nothing to say about it really. We're not gonna cap it because the contests will be over relatively soon. I'd rather people remember us as a busy and perhaps spammy place during the competition than "That place that wouldn't let me make a post."
All of this will settle down soon and things will return to normal.
So I'm a noob to this site, and a noob to forums. I've started 3 topics so far. The Intro, and 2 about the co-op. I feel the co-op topics are pretty good. There are alot of good points being brought up in both of them. I'm not even sure if it is a dupe topic. To be quiet honest I didnt even check to see if there was one already. I signed up afew days ago because I've been having so many problems posting on Blizzard's Diablo III forum. One day I can post, then I wont be able to post for 2-3 weeks. Why? No one can tell. But its all good. I'm here now and trying to add my own flare to the forum.

I'd rather this site be remembered as a site that didn't let idiots post then a site that had fifty "OMG LOOK @ ME MAKING DIABLO RELATED POSTS - NOW GIMME BETA NAO!!1!1!!!oneone" threads.
It's fine to let people make posts if they want. It's great for the site to be busy. But there is good busy, and there is bad busy. When people post whatever garbage they can while praying to get a Beta, that's bad busy. And yes, 50% of it is garbage.
Edit: You deleted Siay's post?
While not exactly as diplomatic as I might hope, he does have a point.
