ok this thread was originally about being emailed about responses to threads we're subscribed to.
but i found another thread on the subject (apparently it's a known issue), and so this thread should be deleted. but i can't deleted it.
so, here's a suggestion, let us delete threads that we make. you can only delete posts in a pre existing thread, i guess, and not the original post. i think you should be able to delete any post you make.
additionally, zoltrix or whoever.. i'd like to be subscribed to the threads i post in so that i can view them on the site (by choosing 'list subscriptions'). i just don't want to receive email notification. is there anyway you can fix it so that we can auto subscribe but not get emails about responses?

thanks pryda, i'll try that.
i hope they can fix the problem. ( i did like the subscription feature, just not the barrage of emails)

Pretty sure you can't give people the ability to delete their own threads as the ability to delete threads is applied globally to the forum or sub forums. If you can delete your's you can delete other people's too.
While your intentions are clearly understandable and most would probably do the same, delete pointless thread they made themselves, some people would delete threads made by other people. And the mods and admins wouldn't want that to happen.
But I could be wrong.

nah you can do session checks (like how you can edit your posts and not other peoples)
it does say you can delete posts and if you delete the original post it should delete the thread, but you can't delete that post
Yeah not sure if you can delete a thread while you are viewing it, which is what your talking about there with going to edit post.
Threads are generally deleted by checked the check-box in the forum.
Would have to see if it's because of your status, i.e member rather than moderator that would allow you to delete the opening post like you say, but probably not since at best all it would do is move the first reply to fill the spot left by the opening post being deleted.
I don't think the coding allows for the entire thread to be deleted if the opening post is deleted. Which can be done by a moderator (or higher) via check boxes in the thread.
I've deleted opening posts in threads before, and yeah all it achieved was the first reply became the opening post.

Yes, I just tested it and it appears that even soft deleting the OP of a thread will soft delete the whole thread. As far as I have seen, no one in the past has ever messed with the vBulletin code. In this case, it could potentially be a very huge security issue if it's not absolutely perfect, which a large and active website like this can't stand for. We do have people now starting to do some more serious stuff from the Curse network, though, so maybe it will be done.
In all reality, I don't see the point of only deleting the OP of a thread, anyway. Users are allowed to respond to anything in the OP, so if the OP is bad, the whole thread is bad, essentially. There could be, of course, special cases, as there always are.
If you need a thread or post deleted, just PM, VM, or IM a moderator or administrator. Actually, just Report the post with the Report a Post function- it will show up for any moderation-or-higher staff member to see, so it will likely be done with quickly.
what about allowing deletion of an original post before anyone responds?
or allowing deletion in that short period right after a post is posted when you can still edit it without it showing up as edited.
anyway not a huge deal just would be nice.
btw i miss subscriptions

If we allow people to edit without a history attached to it, first off, we're going to have a bunch of empty (and thereby, useless) spaces in the databases associated with posts, and secondly, it will bring in to account accountability, which I'm sure you don't need me to explain to you
Like I said, if you want it deleted, just report the post/thread to a staff member (moderation or higher) and it should be taken care of very quickly, since there is nearly always someone on.
i think you misunderstood what i was saying.
but anyway, it's fine not a big deal. will pm a mod if i want my original post deleted.

for some reason all my subscriptions had email notification.
i changed the subscription mode to 'no email notification' but kept getting emails. (i assume now, that it didn't apply to my old subscriptions.)
when that didn't work, and i kept getting emails, i changed it to no subscription and deleted all of my existing subscriptions.
now i think i understand that the mode is only for new subscriptions and i would have had to edit the notification for my old subscriptions (if you can even edit that?) in order to alter them from being 'email notification' and prevent myself from being spammed by the site.
anyway, now i have 'no email notification' and and hoping that will work.
but i still have lost all my old subscriptions and haven't replied to any threads since then besides this one.

No, if I did, by all means, please try to re-explain it  As far as I have seen, I have addressed 1) deleting threads, 2) deleting original posts, and 3) editing posts without it showing up with a history, the first two of which were specifically stated in your title and the last of which was stated in the post before my last response. I may not have addressed everything (and hence why I didn't bother closing the thread since there are still a question or two to be addressed, like subscriptions, which I don't bother with), but I certainly addressed those.
i agree that you addressed all 3 of those points, however only 2 of those were points i was making.
you misread or misunderstood the post that you replied to before this last post:

i understood that deletion of a post with responses was not a good option, but i was venturing that maybe we could be allowed to delete a post that had not yet received responses.
if that still would not be possible, i was hoping that we could be allowed to delete our original post if we did so within a short amount of time after it was posted.
if you are not aware, there is a short amount of time after a post is posted that you can edit it without it showing up as edited.
i never get a post right the first time, so i am quite familiar with editing. i am always pleased when i can get my editing done in the short interval before it shows up as edited. it is during this period that i was hoping that a post could be deleted if no one else had responded.

Say, a five-minute window? I think that would be reasonable. We have to take in to account there are plenty of threads that don't get posted in for a while, but tons of people view them, anyway. What if that post contained flame or trolling, and then the maker just deleted it so that it wouldn't be tracked?
I think what would make it viable, though, is the type of deletion. If it was only soft deletion, so that moderators and administrators could see it even after it's been deleted, then yes, I would agree, since it would still allow us to do our jobs. Is that the kind of deleting you are talking about?
if you are not aware, there is a short amount of time after a post is posted that you can edit it without it showing up as edited.
Yeah, I actually noticed that just recently, ironically enough.
i never get a post right the first time, so i am quite familiar with editing.
Me either. I frequently find myself editing in credit or links after I post a news post
it is during this period that i was hoping that a post could be deleted if no one else had responded.
I would say it's reasonable if this is as far as it goes, as in, we don't see this idea expanding in the future so users can just delete their own threads whenever, like if an argument isn't going the way they like or something immature like that, and as long as this only includes soft deleting.
So we have quite a lengthy discussion on this topic over the last few days in the moderator forum and unfortunately there is a few problems that we don't think we will be able to solve in order to get this to work correctly.
1) We can't seem to find a plug-in that would allow this
2) Even if we were able to find a plug in there would need to be a lot of changes in the web site code in order to accept a change like this.
3) There is possibly a lot of problems that are caused from a change like this here is just a fast example:
Someone posts about how they hate "Insert race here" and there is no mods/admins on line they leave it active till there is about 30 seconds before the cut off time is before they can delete their own post. they delete it, we have a bunch of angry forum members and we have no official record on what was in the tread. Because the person decided to hard delete it so no one can see it after the fact.
Thank you for the suggestion tho, and if we are able to find a good way to implement this we could look back into it in the future, but for now just continue to report a post if you made a double post etc.
i am not familiar with forum plug-ins or coding, but i can understand that allowing us to delete our original posts/threads would probably cause more problems than it would solve.
thanks anyway for looking into it.
maybe you could just change the wording under the report post function, so that it included original posts/threads that you wanted to delete.
as it is now, the text suggests that it would not be appropriate to report a post for that purpose:
[Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts. ]
