I don't like reputation being based from post count or join date. Not just for me, but for other members who I think are still somewhat new, but are very adequate members. Or members worthy of being reconized.
Sorry, I didn't mean that, if that's what you gleaned from my post.
Wow, I never thought this idea would create such debate... anyway, it's quite late in Brazil and I'm pretty tired so I will only adress a few points about this all.
Firstly, I'd like to state that the idea is actually to segregate newcomers from senior members, and so, when I posted this idea, I was aware of how some people who are actually constructive argumenters would be left out because of how new they are. Well put this as a metaphor to life, when you're a child, even though you can be very interested and even slightly educated on some subjects, you simply cannot easily join an adult conversation on that subject. Usually the most you do is sit quiet and listen.
Secondly, date. Why did I choose that. You could take that same metaphor and use it again here, but that wasn't what came in my mind. First of all, I decided not to use post count because of spammers, eventually they would reach the requirement and simply be able to spoil the segregated forum. Also I did not mention the user group, well Elfen said it himself, it would just be too much work for the admins and mods. Anyway, password, yeah that's a possibility but eventually the members would feel like their responsability to invite new people to the forum and things could get messy there, no more needed to say on that. Finally date, why date? Well basically because I find the fairest way of all. When I wrote the 1 month age, I was putting a simbolic number, it could be an year or so, anything. The main idea is, hype spammers normally join only during these teaser times, and so they leave the community for some time. No one seemed to realise my other question was relevant to this. If there is an expiring date for an account, these spammers would be kept outside the forum permanently, given their older accounts have been deleted, on the other hand, the ones who were actually accepted and received by the community will now be more used to the rules and thus able to join on a more organised discussion at the Senior's Forum. This would also elimitate the problem with people who wished to be accepted, they will eventually, but they just need to show commitment to the community. Magistrate's idea on considering post count is good, but maybe that would need the reputation factor added to it, in order to balance out less constructive members from really good ones. Anyway that would be hard to be done though, so I stick with the idea that age is the most effective filter.
Reason for a separate forum: Phrozen has pretty much said it all. I hated this week because I think it would be so much more interesting to see some of the older member's interpretation on the teasers. Also the seniors would not be less involved to the forums. Visibility to the members was something I did not go into because making it a hidden forum would be slightly unfairer to the newer members, afterall they also want to know our ideas. Oh yeah, and of course, some senior member can always take something from the spammed commom forum which can be considered of relevance and post it on the more privative forum and vice-versa.
Well I can't get any more ideas at the moment, too tired, once I get back, I might post more and discuss this better with you.
PS. Damn it feels good to be responsible for a discussion of such proportion and involving so many recognised members...
I don't think handpicking is "too much work". Some people are less busy than others. Let the less busy person do it. Without handpicking, this is completely pointless. Dates are nothing. fbim had been here for ages...
Isn't that the niche of a moderator? To get rid of spam? I mean, if we have ineffective moderation, wouldn't that be something that needs to be addressed.
The problem is that we only have a small number of moderators compared to the average 10 posts per 5 minutes of threads like the Splash page threads (especially during a time like this.) You can't put all the wait on them- not right now, anyway- there just isn't enough of them to combat the spam onslaught. During a normal time without all these pending special events, there are enough moderators, and spam is usually taken care of- but right now, it isn't humanly possible.
And I like the idea of gem quality images being used for reputation. It would be nice if reputation was a larger part of a profile, too. ATM, it seems kind of just like an "Oh, what if we want to gauge someone's reputation? Idea! Let's add green rectangles that accomplish absolutely nothing!"
Would be easier to change how the regular users group works, I don't really want to make another group, I not even sure forum entry can be granted on age, it's post count.
Can't you just extract the value of forum join date and then when it reaches a certain amount of x days, users are automatically transferred to the Senior Member usergroup? You could even make the system more elaborate by incorporating, oh say, post count/reputation like this:
And when the total left side of the equation is equal to 365, they are automatically transferred to said usergroup.
(You'd take 5% of the user's total post count and add it to 10% of their total reputation, rounded to the nearest whole number, and then add it to the number of days since joining- this would allow users to get in to the usergroup sooner depending on their post count (which is diminished greaty in the equation by only taking 5% of it, which can cut back on users getting in for spamming) and a small portion of their reputation.)
Just some elaborated thoughts.
Short answer no.
Forum access if either by group or post count. I can't change that. I can make groups and forums restricted by group easily. maybe make forum "clans" say 7 of them one for each class in LOD, you have a mixed forum for all clans, and you have a dedicated forum for only one. (so that's like 8 in total).
New comers do what they do best, spam and flood areas, and if you want to argue stuff without the threat of spam and flood, use the clan forums.
I might not mind that assuming I was not the only mod/admin at play. Generally you have an "overmod" and a mod in charge of the clans.
But that is a lot of work, but I guess worth it depending on how you view the situation.
Reputation is a silly thing to base things on, since no one uses it. Although I will be famous soon, thanks to all you out there who gave me props.
On this site it is a single green triangle (at least currently), that doesn't change, what does change is the amount of rep, I think I have about 50 points, most people have the default 10. No one uses it anymore, we used to, back when people actually had something to say, not wow check out this pic that has been posted 200 times before in 200 other threads.

Ah, okay. I was just suggesting it, if something of that nature were to be employed. And there are some people who still use reputation (namely, me)
And, like Angellium said, people can't be defined by numbers alone (of course, he said it in many more words .) I had just figured you could alter some base scripts in the vBulletin coding to accomplish said tasks (I know that kind of thing is possible with PHP (and maybe a little JS to keep down on server demand), since I've messed around with it on my own time, but I don't know anything about vBulletin, although I've heard it's better than PHPBB.)
I just have a quick question about the Report Post button.
It may seem silly, but does it even work? I know that I reported at least four threads earlier today (spam, advertising, etc), and they're still there. Granted, none of them are porn bots, but it's still kind of annoying to see.
I just want to add that I wasn't really expecting them to be deleted, but it seems that none of the moderators that were on today took notice.
If this has already been discussed, then I apologize.
Reported threads go to a forum that only mods and admins can see, we actually have to check that forum to see if there are reported posts.

They work, but they require a mod to be on. They are very ehlpful though, so keep using it

And this metaphor is useless, because when you are born you lack the skills needed to argue. New members do not.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

You're looking from the wrong point of view, it's not about ability to argue, it's about respecting others and learning how to join a discussion in the terms given by the people who were there before you, and respecting them.
Anyway if Elfen says the clan forum is the best thing he can do, I support it's creation. It will probably have a slow beginning but in time it will fulfill its potential. Just one reminder for those who will be joining, please try to use this clan forum just for hype-generated threads and news, the worst case scenario is that you'll stop posting on normal forums. Although I trust it won't happen, it's here just in case. ^^

And there in lies it's falicy, or paradox. The new comers do not respect others, they spam and flood, and curse, and flame, make duplicate threads/posts at a whim, with no regard.

That would depend on the entry requirement, which from memory of other sites I am a part of is around 1000 posts. Plus a written application. Hmm actually it might not be 1000, there is one site where it is 1 months active duty (err service, err been there for one month) and 50 posts. We might want to think of steeper requirements, 1 month + 50 posts seems easy. maybe 500, though at 10 posts a day and your almost there in one month (10x30=300). But there is still the written application. Which can be denied if the moderators in charge feel it is unsatisfactory.

sorry for the size just copy and pasted from the homepage. also made a thread to see if someone hacked the homepage. just wondering?
if you want just delete this post if it is no big deal.
Clan forums do not work without a commitee, or council. That is how they work. If we have clan forums we have commitees, it's a default aspect.
Though initially, I may end up hand picking them. However clan forum, a true clan forum (not the SICK one for anyone who is getting confused here), has yet to be made official.

I did. And do we not have members here who's post totals number in the hundreds or even thousands. Surely some of them would make for excellent commitee or council members.
Suppose I (or probably Jetrall) were to make them "Clan Moderators" they would form the commitee of which Murderface spoke. They would fit the requirement of posts, the months activity is more one you do yourself, you wait a month (at least) get your required post count, then make an application, or rather request one be sent to you, as they are generally a series of hyperthetical questions posed by a clan moderator (or leader).
I am trying to figure out how this works as I go, I do not hold any rank of any reall distinction at any forum I am a part of that has forum clans. I hold lowly ranks. Grunt ranks.
So let us propose I make some clan forums here, (easily done, click, click click done (in essence of course)), I then look to some people that are well respected here to form the commitee or council. They would of course have to also fullfill any entry requirement that was proposed, say 1000 posts. (or maybe 500 whatever). Said people would then have their names displayed somewhere along with other clan rules, regulations and requirements, so people would know who to ask to get the application, which they then fill out, then send back to the commitee member for review, if it is good, they are in, if it is bad, they have one more chance to try again, or they do not join. That seems to be a constant rule of forum clans.
Clan membership is usually denoted by a banner, often above or below the avatar.
If we were to institute clan forums, we could as a collective decide upon what ever requirements we felt were best, though it would primarily be based on a post count, the month activity is more safe gurad aganst super spammers. 10 posts a day is not overly hard for some. 100 posts, hell they could knock that out in a little over a week at that rate.

I think we should, if we go the route of forum clans, start with just the one (more can be made later as numbers swell), I don't think we have quite enough people for much more than 3 clans, based on the fact forums are neglected enough as it is.
So we need a commitee or council (and probably a name), some requirements, and a clan banner.
