Just for the sake of argument, let's say the Beta lasts 2 months. Is not possible that they will still have a lot work to do after the beta? Including all the feedback they get from testers, and whatever tweaks they need to make to polish it off? That could easily push the game to early 2012.
I mean, just because the beta may only take 2 months, doesn't necessarily mean..they will be able to release it within a month or two afterward. I would hate to think for this to happen, but the thought is always itching at the back of my head. I still hope they are able to keep to their goal, I really do.
It's pleasing to know that they don't need much time to test. I just can't completely assume that means it will be out when they intend. I certainly welcome anyone to positively change my opinion to reassure that I shouldn't worry this much. It's just in my nature unfortunately.

If I recall correctly, they said the Beta's primary purpose will be to test their hardware and their client-server infrastructure. They're going to see how well the game will work under heavy pressure. I also remember them saying that they need to tweak the game's interactions with BNet2. These two things will probably only undergo quick changes, perhaps leading to daily updates of the beta client. Won't hold them back after beta ends.
Also, since the company-wide testing has been going for a while (from what we've heard) and knowing what little content will be in the Beta, I think it's safe to assume that they don't need us in the Beta to help with itemization, skill testing or balance, like most Beta phases are used for. Nah, the team seems confident with their number crunching.
My guess? Unless they run into some major problems like "Oops, our graphical engine absolutelty crashes half the GPUs out there", Beta should be short and sweet and not require much work once it's done. I could see a last-minute polishing phase happening, but nothing too long. Gameplay should already be spot-on for the Beta. If all goes well, release has no reason to be that late after it ends. If all goes well, that is. Fingers crossed!

When they told us that they just started alpha test 3 months ago, maybe their just saying that. Maybe they're alpha testing it for years now that they don't need as much public testing.
On a different note, I love blizzard but their when it's done attitude will be gone soon especially in this age where a lot of developers are catching up with high quality games and they know it. They will be releasing games much sooner now but this doesn't mean they will be rushing their games out. It will only be a much lesser development cycle. But thats just me.

I haven't once complained in all this time, I usually don't mind. But the thing here is, it's getting silly. How much longer are you gonna delay a game and expect people to wait like little children on christmas. I'm about to give up, cause honestly I'm not that excited anymore. Yes I believe it to be a good game, but that's all. When there's not even a date even if I would be excited, I wouldn't care cause the time of being all "omg can't wait" is over like 50 years ago. There's no "can't wait" anymore, cause we all know we'll have to wait. Forever maybe, who knows. I have lots to keep me busy IRL for a change, and if anything I'm more excited about other MMO's that will hit in the 2012 times. It's just that, as a Diablo fan I should be more excited about that, not other MMO's. But honestly they look as good, and being a Diablo fan doesn't matter much when it never releases.
I'm at the stage where I'm annoyed, just RELEASE, the F'IN, GAME. I bet people would rather just have the game than wait forever for perfection. There was a time when I was like "let them take their time", that was like 5 years ago lol. When it doesn't look that great anyway why would I wait for perfection? I just want something to play, D3 won't be my next game to devote much time to anyway, so I might as well get a time-killer now.
On top of that they've made some changes that, personally I don't mind too much, but many seem to. Fill me in on the plan here, killing your game BEFORE it releases ? If you have any clue you'll know there will be better games in the near future, that do something different, that are on a different scale, and that we haven't waited for since the dawn of time. Guild Wars 2 is an example. Can't wait for that. Blade and Soul doesn't look bad, neither does The Secret World. Project Titan although far away might be good. If anything this game will be to pass my time casually, and at that for maybe some months tops. It's sad, as it is Diablo. I was so EXCITE, now I so DISAPOINT.
I wouldn't blame blizzard on taking so long to develop the game. Most games take several years to design and implement. I'd blame the politics in the gaming corporations behind the dev team. The public isn't pr-ivied to a lot of information the big game corporations are. It's all about generating income and crushing the competition. Just be patient, we'll have the beta soon enough, Hopefully the game as well. I speculate Diablo 3 is blizzards secret weapon against SWTOR.
Considering a lot of the videos that were released during the media events, and the vagueness of a lot of blue post comments, we should have seen this coming a mile away. When they talk "specifics" and all they have to say is "We're currently analyzing that.." or some similar statement, that's a dead giveaway that there's still a LOT of stuff to add into the game. I'd say if anything Beta will be out on the last day in September.
Good news is, it just means the game will be that much better. Their best full-game release time would be right before Christmas, and I know they want a short beta time. If they did SC2 beta in April-June with a release in July, I think doing a d3 beta release in sept/oct. with a full-game release in Dec. is totally doable.
