It appears that there is no difference whether you are playing multi-player or single-player as far as drop rates go per individual player. You will not be at an advantage or disadvantage based upon how you want to play the game (excluding the fact that each player can share their drops in multi-player).
Hmmm. Not quite.
Official Blizzard Quote:
The fact that you're killing faster (which you will) in a group means more items in less amount of time, means we don't need to provide other incentives.

Also, I'm curious, when other players kill monsters, does our Magic Find apply to those monsters or does it get to zero for those?
How is that not quite? That's exactly what it's saying. ONE MORE TIME GUYS:
The drop rate per character is IDENTICAL in single and multi-player.
Those words need to be printed in very large letters on the front page of this website.
There are other advantages to multiplayer because of item trading and rate of monster killing, but that's NOT changing the drop rate PER CHARACTER.
Jesus calm down. I understand what it means, but Scyber said "You will not be at an advantage or disadvantage based upon how you want to play the game (excluding the fact that each player can share their drops in multi-player)." which is not ~quite~ true.
You WILL be at a slight advantage because you will be killing more monsters.

You're wording wounded me psychologically, but that is *technically* true. I think it was implied though.

Your MF will be applied to your drops. If a monster drops for you, regardless of whether or not you killed it, it drop rate is dependent on your gear and attributes.
So, theoretically, I could twink 3 barbarians and give them the most magic find the game offers each, and stick them in a corner while my main takes out the boss?

So...does this news story mean that co-op will get less drops per player?
You're trolling right?
Please tell me your trolling.
...
Not quite. Either A ) you get less drops per player or B ) you get equal/more drops per player. Less drops would mean that co-op would be at a disadvantage, equal or more drops would mean co-op would be at a severe advantage.
I guess I just am not following the news story very well.
So...does this mean that when I'm playing offline will I still get that like increased chance of finding better stuff cause I'm offline and have no way of trading or anything?

I think it just means everyone has the same chance of finding items either single player or multi. Yes co op there will be a advantage via trading items but everyone will be on the same playing field with chance i assume.

It's confusing because a lot of things have been said, but in the end it's quite simple.
You get equal drops per player. You kill faster stuff in multiplayer. Therefore, you get stuff faster in comparison to single player.
Whether you're in a single player or a multiplayer game, the drops you see will always be your drops, and they are always calculated in the same manner: the amount of players in the game doesn't affect your drop rates. It just affects killing speed, so indirectly it affects the amount of items you're going to get per time unit.
The amount of players does not increase the chances of you getting a particular item.

So then Co-Op is at an advantage, due to the speed that they can go at, and due to the fact that a wizard can give a barbarian an axe he picks up and vice versa with the barbarian giving the wizard a wand he picks up.
I cant believe this bickering hasn stopped and this is (I think) the third thread about it...common people this is the Diablo community not the...OTHER..community.

This gives Link a sad.
Why does it give you a sad? How would you rather have it done? Don't you want co-op to have reasonable advantages over single player?
The Barbarian/Wiz situation you described sounds pretty peachy to me...

I'm not bickering nor am I angry, I'm telling other people how they're wrong.
(that's a joke, btw)
In all seriousness, I take the subject pretty seriously because I was a MF hoarder in D2 and probably will be again in d3 eventually.
I don't get why people are complaining about co op advantages.... I really think blizzard wanted people to play with each other . I just didn't want a % increase with loot drops because of coop and there will not be so i am glad.
I honestly don't care who gets what and how much of it I get or how good it is.
As long as I get something from a group kill i'm happy because, there is nothing I can do about the % of rarity I get from loot and since I know that i'll gladly move on.
Man, that's not how I see it at all. I love doing all the calculations and theorycrafting when it comes to loot. Did you not do that in diablo 2?
Edit: rephrase
Well I normally let the big brains take that job because, I enjoy the playing the game not calculating it but we all enjoy things differently.
LOL, fair enough. Though I wouldn't consider myself 'big brains' by any means. I definitely will be enjoying the playthrough the first couple times I go through it. Then after I get a better grasp on the game mechanics, I'll probably delve into the finer points and analyzing them. Thankfully, there are plans to make a new Arreat Summit for D3 which will give us help on the matter. I doubt that the new site will ever be as in-depth as the old Arreat Summit, though.
I might get interested in it later like you will be but I don't like planning my future in a game it makes me think about it too much. :|
Meh, guess your right. Only problem would be to get people to work together and share and not horde everything. Lol.
Sure! The only disadvantage I'd see with this would be multiplayer being too good... meaning that you would get 3 friends and within a short amount of time, you'd get every item you needed because of the sheer amount of item drops; considering it's 3 friends, you wouldn't need to hoard the items for yourself and you'd freely give each other what you needed.
Only problem would be to get people to work together and share and not horde everything. Lol.
The thing is, you don't necessarily have to trade items right then and there. Presumably, Blizzard is going to have some sort of trading system so that you can put your items into a larger market than just the three other people in a game.

The fact that your killing monsters faster in co-op would technically increase drop rate over time...just not per monster.
