Honestly, the crafting system was one of the best aspects of WoW. As uneasy as I am with some of the other 'borrowed' aspects, this is one I am certain will prove rewarding. I like the idea of every item you drop having some value other than gold, which in Diablo 2 was almost useless.
While I have no doubt I wont be standing around watching my hero crafting in twon, I fear I'll be spending way too much opening the salvage window and deconstructing every piece of junk I come across. Maybe it's too exploitable, but I was hoping the crafting system would just be entirely gold related. I hope this doesn't turn into anything like Torchlight where my entire inventory was just filled with odd levels of gems to be combined and upgraded.
Basically anything would provide grinding issues. That's what Diablo is - recycling the game over and over again by grinding. You can't sit and play the game for more than 15 total hours if you aren't grinding. Crafting in every game is grinding. Its real-world counterparts are grinding. Fetch the stuff you need, make some more so you're better at your trade, sell them, rinse and repeat. That's just how it works. If you don't like that, you're either not going to like crafting in any game, or you're being hypocritical when judging Diablo's crafting system. That's how I see it.
Ooooooo! now I just came up with an achievement you can get! use the weapon that you began with throughout the game, but you can upgrade the item to make it easier
You know people have to program these things right =P

I'm going to stray off-topic right now and put my two-cents on why the graphics might not be to everyone's delight in the video.
They probably toned down detail to reduce lag. If they didn't do that, we'd have a whole bunch of people saying "it's laggy as fuck!" and "holy shit, Blizz has bad comps, mayne!".

I hate the way you cling to ignorance and pass it off as innocence
In wow, you had to put alot of effort in your crafting...lots of time went in there so I'm glad this system is totally diablo-related.
I think you'll still need to put a lot of effort in to crafting in Diablo III to get top-end gear or items of worth in end-game.

I'm honestly not noticing a difference and I watched videos for New Tristram, older and current, in HD. I think people are just getting paranoid about the graphics and are seeing things as terrible because they want or fear them to be so.

Either that or people are just being pessimistic for the sake of being pessimistic. You can't have realists nowadays, there always has to be a negative spin on everything.
And yeah, they probably didn't watch it in HD. I too didn't see any difference in graphics quality, maybe there was a bit more definition in everything though.

I remember Jay Wilson saying that people have to choose between selling items and salvaging them, because what gold can do is so much more important than crafting an item. Until we know what gold does, we can't really judge how long we will spend salvaging goods for crafting.
Also, from what I can gather, the recipies that are item drops are what we are going to be aiming for. Sure, it will be fun to upgrade basic weapons at the beginning, but once you find a decent weapon/armor, you'll probably use that for a while and not focus on crafting at all.
