For pete's sake it's just a web page design update. Don't try to put every little thing they do into such philosophical arguments.

LMAO! I use to think I knew what normal that was, but then I moved to Piedmont (next door to Berkeley) for about 10 years. I don't think I want to know what normal is again, living among freaks is so much more fun.
I took this update as a sign. In my opinion it means that Tyrael is corrupted.
And since they havent updated the storyline yet for D3, I'm thinking Tyrael is going
to be the villain/boss. Because remember when in D1 the champion gets corrupted to
become Diablo in D2, well in the cinematic at the end of D2:LOD, you see Tyrael throwing
a sword into the giant soulstone and possibly getting corrupted from doing so. The new wings look more demonic and ''bat like,'' and he seems to have gotten a bit darker.
This is just my personal opinion, but I took this update as a clear sign for D3.
Tyrael (or the angel on the front page) does have an ominous look about him, which was never a vibe I got from the original Tyrael. I hope that he doesn't become an evil force, because he was always such a cool character to have on your side. However, Blizzard does have a tendency to write stories where character 'x' goes crazy and becomes evil.
I think a more likely scenario is one in which Tyrael has lost his standing with the High Heavens and thus lost his powers (and perhaps his wings), and now the High Heavens (or at least Imperius) are at war with Sanctuary. Without Tyrael to defend them, the humans will need to fight back. This would lend some credence to the grimness of the splash page.
As for the debate on the concept art, I would suggest that we focus our attention on two places in the drawing: one, the shoulders (where the wings aught to be) and two, the sword. Notice how the sword fades into nothing at the angel's side. This denotes that the rest of the sword exists, but that it is not necessary to the particular piece of artwork (as it is most likely a representation of the armor details). Now look at the shoulders where the wings should be. They do not extend and fade. They stop and are capped by lines all the way across the shoulders. I can't say that this means Tyrael will lose his wings, but it does seem an odd coincidence that we have this piece of art and a new wing style on the front page that seems to have them deteriorating.
Just my thoughts. At any rate, the D3 site is incredible in its detail and use of flash.

Yes! Those were my exact thoughts, to a T. Honestly. It makes the most sense to me. It seems like his wings were stripped or something, of their power, perhaps.
But, what that does not explain, is why we are still fighting demons and monsters. Maybe a pact between the Hells and High Heavens? I don't know if it works or not.
finally someone who understands me!
i agree entirel with your post..its not defined truth, but a nicely argumented speculation..
I thought you might appreciate that part of the comment. But on this matter of the Hells and High Heavens joining forces against Sanctuary, is it a possibility? I'm afraid my knowledge of the lore is a bit shallow to say one way or the other.

What do you mean? Why wouldn't we be fighting demons?

If the High Heavens are at war with Sanctuary, they wouldn't be demons. We would be fighting servants of heaven instead. So, if we are still fighting demons, then the war cannot be with anyone other than hell. Unless there is a pact between the two which doesn't really make sense. What I'm saying is that I'm not sure my theory actually works in its current state. It does forward the debate on the different splash page wings though.

Sorry, I think in my previous posts I butchered what I meant. Heaven has typically been ruled by an isolationist mindset- staying out of the affairs of humanity. Some powerful angels, however, like Imperius or Inarius, have tried to harm humanity. So, what I mean is, perhaps with the barrier gone, Imperius would try again to destroy humanity. Not necessarily war against Heaven, just against a renegade angel.
However, your first statement is incorrect, I think. Humanity is the mid-ground. Sanctuary is the mid-ground. With the barriers gone, demons would definitely be surging in to Sanctuary. And, of course, Heaven would not want them conquering Sanctuary, because then they'd have a huge advantage. So they would counter attack.
What I mean is, in Diablo, Heaven isn't "good" and Hell isn't "evil". They're just two different groups of beings. Hell favors chaos, whereas Heaven does order. That's what drove some of the angels to hate humans- they weren't orderly enough. It's much more complex than that, of course, but that's the general idea. And Hell, of course, wants to spread chaos. So you have two bodies of beings trying to impose their ideas of perfection on Sanctuary. Just because you're at war with Hell doesn't mean you can't be with Heaven, though. Humanity isn't fighting for the ideals of Heaven or Hell, they're fighting for their own existence and life, so they're with whoever will help them achieve that.
In that sense, Tyrael is the only angel on their side, because he wants to help humans (he was originally on Inarius' side, but that changed at some point). He completely went against the isolationism dictates of the Angiris Council to aid Sanctuary. So, he's not in good standings with Heaven. Or with Hell, since he tried to defeat the Three.
Given, I don't think Tyrael, at first, helped humanity because of this- he probably realized that everything is connected- Heaven, Hell, and Sanctuary- so what affects one affects the other two, be it positive or negative.
But maybe you're right. Those are just my thoughts.
