Seem to be overlooking Greater Rifts are timed, and while the dot will kill any monster; will it do it in TIME?
Nope.
Well, I guess it depends on a level of Grift. Right now on PTR the highest GRift level for solo wizard is 34, the worst of top 50 is lvl 30. I was @ lvl 31 and the playstyle there looked like this:
If it's a regular mob, just drop 3 Conflag stacks on it and move on.
If it's an elite/champ, nuke it until it's dead.
And it worked just fine - I was well ahead of time before I got DC'd. I guess for 40+ we'll need more firepower to beat the clock, but the point still stands: it doesn't matter if you get full DOT in 2-3 sec or in 10 sec if you have 15 minutes and you can pretty much hit&run through regular mobs.
well, in place of mm/conflag we now get something else with the new changes to epxlosive blast, this mean that a wiz with firebird and wand of woe can get this superdot up with like 2 casts. or mby even one when you take critical hits into account. (infact im wondering if we even need the woe to make the spec work. casting 3 explosive blasts without woe should be enough to get the dot up, and then we can run on to the next elitepack knowing the dot will kill this one eventually.
You don't need WoH to get that superdot in 2 casts. All you need is to drop 3 stacks of MM/Conflag on your target. In fact, you don't even need to worry about the superdot, since even 1 stack of Conflag with eventually kill any monster. Probably will get nerfed before 2.1 hits live servers though.
Hydra is clunky and its inability to proc the new Firebird bonus is likely the nail in the coffin for the build if it's not a bug. Energy Twister is too situationally dependent to be a reliable primary source of damage. Lightning and Cold are still just awful. WoW builds were buffed, but already face significant issues in harder content. Channeling spells were buffed, but face the same issue and being encouraged to stand still for 3+ seconds to take advantage of the new mechanics will certainly not help that.
Exactly my thoughts on the matter.
Like I said earlier, MM isn't dead - I just don't see any reasons to use Mirrorball anymore.
But my biggest concern right now is that all fire spenders are kinda crappy - either low DPS, or clunky mechanics (WTB the ability to spawn ET under the cursor!), and most of them are expensive, hence Cindercoat is almost mandatory. Hydra + fire tornadoes + mirror images build is a perfect example of all that: I know it can deal massive damage, but its playstyle is far from enjoyable.
"Depth Diggers
The damage bonus provided by this item's Legendary Power no longer includes Witch Doctor and Wizard Signature Spells"
There you go.
As for "RIP MM" - I'd rather say RIP Mirrorball. With hydra + MM/conflag + Firebird's there's really no reason to use Mirrorball, since the majority of damage is done via DOTs and Mirrorball doesn't buff any of that. The ability to get 3 stacks of Conflag in one cast is useless, because the monster is eitherfat - hence you'll get off at least 3 casts of MM at it anyway - ornot fat - hence hydras will burn it in a moment, you don't need the Conflag's DOT to deal with such monsters.
I'm okay with this change. I'm not sure that I feel signature spells should be the main damage dealers. That's what AP spenders are for. That's just my opinion though.
Sure. But this is based on the assumption that spenders are somewhat good.
