That was my own experience with the game, exactly like that. I got initiated by a friend, and suddenly I was playing it nonstop (always wanting to see "what's next", I need that ore type, I need that upgraded armor!), addicted to the very palpable and concrete sense of progression.
A progression that didn't get planned by a developer (for me to follow a preset path), but rather one that happened naturally in an very random manner (random world and items), and also different than most games out there today.
Let me know what you think of Forced Bagstone, I'm thinking of buying it as well. Let us know if it actually works well in coop (or if there are connection issues, etc.).
And Terraria seem like really bland and boring at first...
... digging through Dirt, feeling the weakest being alive (well, at least stronger than those Dragon Quest Slimes :P), scavenging pots and hidden chests for any survival tools you can find, surviving the night, and mining ore at the speed of a snail....
... but with some persistence, the pace starts picking up, you start finding these awesome items, you start equipping yourself and dealing with things you woulnd't imagine facing before, insanely hard tasks suddenly become very easy (like mining big Underground chasms or going into the Corruption), you stop hiding and you start hunting...
... and then you find out there's still things out there that scare the shit out of you (underground Jungle, Dungeon, hardmode...)... and that's what keeps you moving, discovering things, digging and exploring, and every now and then just relaxing and building whatever you wanna build at that time.
Hopefully this sparks your curiosity so you give it another shot (I don't know how much you played it :P).
