As for the plan the prime evils might have had. Look at what Izual says when he is killed.
Izual: Tyrael was a fool to have trusted me! You see, it was I who told Diablo and his Brothers about the Soulstones and how to corrupt them. It was I who helped the Prime Evils mastermind their own exile to your world. The plan we set in motion so long ago cannot be stopped by any mortal agency. Hell, itself, is poised to spill forth into your world like a tidal wave of blood and nightmares. You and all your kind... are doomed.
So it was not Azmodan and Baile who overthrew the prime evils, but it was the prime evils' plan to be exiled to the world.
Could it be that their defeat was all part of the plan? Baal tricked Tyrael into destroying the worldstone.
What I don't get, however, is why they waited 20 years to begging their invasion?
hmm
Make demons, make more demons, make more demons. BANG, invade.
The comet carries a dark omen in its fiery being and it calls the heroes of Sanctuary To defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells – And even the failing luminaries of the High Heavens itself."
I believe the comet is Tyrael warning about other angels. I don't think he is corrupted.
The prophecy of the final day has a second part and talked of an omen falling from the Heavens. I suppose Tyrael really is the vessel for a greater evil.
What is the second part ?
