Or, going back to the shield idea, give the actual gloves weapon stats...
Then remove weapons for Monks but give them a skill that ups there stats a little bit due to the loss of the weapons, thus not allowing monks to be underpowered vs other classes.

that'd work well also. That's how kick attacks worked with assassins I believe. Boots decided damage.
Gloves with studded knuckles, brass knuckles, spiked gloves. Things like that. I just wouldn't want to see claws or katar typed because that is Assassin based.
Martial Arts or Staff/Spear fighting is what I'd like to see melee wise.
Actually for fist weapon types I think it'd be cool to see prayer beads or something. They could wrap them around their fist and it grant them holy power to enhance their hand to hand capabilities.
Something like this:
The polearm, the prayer beads, the rope tightly clenched in his fist carrying his jug I guess.
Ya I'd kind of like to see monks use spears AND staves. Definitely wield them different than other classes though. In D2 characters just swung staffs like they were squishing bugs.
Knuckle weapons would be good... Or even just use there fists and have the weapons as buffs... Like you know how Paladins get the shield dmg on there shields? Give a special monk thing on items kinda like that... Idk...
Yeah that'd be kind of neat, maybe they could get their damage from some variable on rings or something.
Well to be fair monks are ascetic. Which means in practical terms that they foolishly believe that the pleasures of this life are irrelevant and useless, and the most devoted of them wouldn't care one whit if this entire planet was destroyed tomorrow. They'll be "attaining nirvana" or some shit in the afterlife anyway.
Ya except Nirvana is a Buddhist concept. We're talking fantasy monks.
We're discussing FANTASY monks, who study to obtain complete perfection of mind, body, and spirit. Who worship whatever god the fantasy setting allows.
Such as DnD monks who had the quivering palm technique and could stop someones heart with it.
It's not like there were ACTUAL martial arts assassins in real life either.
Very nice a video showing how monks should be on Diablo's side.... but not on ours.
If you're not going to provide a valid logical reason as to why this idea wouldn't work, you can feel free to leave this discussion at any time and just say you don't like the idea.
Monks - don't - fight (Monks are peaceful and against violence- sorry to you bullet proof monk fans out there) and any game that has a monk class ( guildwars) usually is boring. and Diablo3 isn't going to be boring.
I don't think you're getting it, this is a fantasy game. Like Magistrate said monks have been used in many fantasy games. Even DnD. If you find them boring, then that's your style. You must not have liked assassins either because they used Martial Arts.
Whats the point of a monk when you a have a paladin or a crusader ( a highly god fearing class MADE for fighting).
Sorry guys but lets think here. Monks (nor Buddha) fight.ever. now stop trying to contradict their relgions
What are you on about? Monks fight in many fantasy games.
This has nothing to do with Buddhism, that was a different thread. I'm not trying to contradict anything. Martial arts is for self defense, and if the world is in danger of eminent undead and demonic Armageddon why WOULDN'T the monks that worship whatever faith stand up and fight?
And monk rather than Paladin to mix things up a bit, we've already had a holy shield class.
And people doubted me and said the idea was stupid.
When I mentioned healing I meant very small amount of healing. Like a pallys holy bolt, or the holy bolts from Fist of the Heavens.
Think more of them as a martial arts user.

With auras maybe and such?

Well Asian monks practice martial arts and staff fighting. So maybe think of the Asian influenced ones instead.
Not that there is an Asia or Catholic church in Sanctuary anyway.

Not all monks are peaceful, especially in games.

What other names would be suitable?
Ya i looked for it but couldn't find it on first 3 pages, and it's over 3 months old probably so I just made a new one.
