Jethera road along the path with the others listening subtly to their conversations, the bet, Viktor's plea to Kifu to drive better, he was drawn into his tome, but he heard it all."Quicken your pace!"Buliwyf had commanded to the wagon. Jethera popped his head out of the back of the wagon long enough to see the dark haunting smoke rise into the air.Smoke, what could this mean? Hopefully everything is alright.
They came upon the town of Tappas, deviastated. Jethera removed his knapsack and threw his tome down in the wagon and jumped out to help where needed as Buliwyf instructed them to search for any survivors. Jethera followed Buliwyf and Jamis, who had been stirring as they arrived on Tappas, up to the church, which is the only part of the town that had evaded the deviastation that the rest of the town endured. A single body of a priest laid dying on the steps of the church. Buliwyf was quick to question him about the events that had lead to the destruction of Tappas.
"The Riddians. They came down the river. While our best fighters were in the fields, the best from Riddia came down the river and took us by surprise. Most of the towns people did not get away. They hacked us down where we stood, women, children, they slaughtered them all, I saved who I could. They are safe in the chu........" It all makes sense now. It was not the tip of their forces that we fought, it was their destraction. The bastards, how could they? Do they have no shame, no honor, no soul? What fuels the fire between Riddia and Tappas so much that they would have to step this low? Jethera thought to himself as rage and vengence pulsed through his veins. The priest quietly died as Jamis returned with the water Buliwyf had requested.
"They played us all for fools. Riddia will pay for this!" Jethera nodded with agreement to Buliwyf's statment. "Vengence for Tappas," Jethera said with clenched teeth, "Vengence to all who have had to endure such terror from Riddia!"
"what a fine book that is Jethera" Viktor told him exchanging books with him. Jethera quickly thumbed through a couple pages of Viktor's hymm book before giving it back to him as Buliwyf emerged from the medic tent and announced their leave for Tappas. Viktor took his hymm book back and gave back Jethera's tome. Jethera packed up the tomes that he has laid about around the fire and had been reading. He stood up and felt the last bit of the warmth from the fire before pouring his canteen of water over it and stomping the rest out with his boot. We're heading to town, I can always get more water when we arrive. Buliwyf and Ignis mount their steeds, while the rest of the weary gang climb into the wagon for the trip ahead. Jethera, with no horse, climbs into the wagon with the rest of this comrades and sits down next to Viktor, who is saying prayers for Jamis and their trip to Tappas. As Jethera is boarding the wagon, Buti jumps out for a small conversation with Kira who is sitting beside the wagon cleaning her weapons. After they talk, Kira mounts her steed and grabs Jamis' to lead beside her. Jethera notices a small bottle with a note attached to it next to Jamis and picks it up and inspects it. Possibly a healing salve. 'Smear on wounds and under nose' the note reads. I might have to discuss this recipe with whoever left this for I have never seen this before.
Jethera again opens his knapsack, fully loaded with tomes and scrolls, and removes the book he was reading prior to 'The Divine Healer' and read again. Sitting patiently for their departure Jethera mind escapes into his tome as he draws further from reality. Jethera sits now, fully engulfed in the text of his tome as the field which started with the screams and cries of battle now echos with the sounds of horse and wagon alike as the Knights of the Burning Blade depart on their next journey ahead.
Jethera listened as Jamis struggled with his words and ended with the simple request for stitches. Jethera swore under his breath at himself, wishing he could help them more, but Jethera had no physical strength or powerful weapons like the others. He only had his knowledge and text to use as weapons. He felt that he needed to prove himself to his allies and quickly became eager for their next battle. Jethera could then show them his true powers. Jamis was then carried off to the medic tent by Lento and Kira followed them over to get her leg looked at and she was quick to return. It must have been nothing too major. That is a relief.
Jethera watched as Kira tried to make idle conversation with Buti, whose magic was far beyond even Jethera's knowledge. Buti seemed to be able to control her weapons both mentally and physically, which was impressive. After Kira's attempts showed nothing but failure she moved to the wagon's wheel and cleaned her weapons.
Jethera, unlike most others, didn't mind the body parts laying around the group as he had read of battles one hundred times as brutal and witnessed some brutal ones himself. Although he didn't mind them lying around, he did think that Warick had done the group a favor by having Kifu put them back in his pouch for later use. Jethera turned to Kifu after hearing his name mentioned and inspected his paper cut that he hadn't realized was there. "Ha, being an Archivist, paper cuts are one of the frequent wounds that we get," Jethera told him.
One of the newer faces to Jethera was Viktor, who, Jethera thought, would make an excellent addition to the mercenary ranks. Although Jethera could not put his finger on why such a holy man would be aiding a gang of mercenaries on their missions, he figured that his cause was pure, whatever it may be. Viktor pulled out a book that he started to read and it intrigued Jethera. Remembering the tome that he removed from his knapsack her held it out toward Viktor, "Viktor, if I'm not mistaken, out of all the people here, I'd think you would be most interested in this tome here. It's 'The Divine Healer', take a look if you would. And what is that that you're reading there? I might be interested in it myself."
Not many things broke Jethera from his reading as he knew that Jamis would be fine because the others already had been taking care of him. Rather than being another person to be in the way of Jamis, Jethera sat by and read.
Jethera closed his tome that he had been reading in order to listen to Kifu's story for more information of his companions was always an interest to Jethera. He listened intently to his story of the leopard in the jungles. As Kifu turned around with his pause, Jethera was drawn more into the story and startled by the Witch Doctor's mask.
Jethera had noticed people taking interest in Jamis' wounds and their attempts to help him, How can I help him too? I'm not healer or trained in any type of medical assistance Jethera thought to himself watching Kira and Jamis. Then, Jamis answered the question that had even been waiting in Jethera's mind.
"We are fighting for the Tappas for the same reason we fight for anyone. Their grievance was just and their pay was good. We're mercenaries, that's what we do. You all know this," Jamis told the group. What? It all doesn't make sense. The Ridians pillage the Tappans villages and kill their people, but the Ridians forces were weak. I have feelings that this might only be the tip of their forces. Jethera thought to himself before turning his attention back to the matter at hand. Getting their leader up and well again.
That's it! he though again. Jethera turned to his knapsacks and pulled out five books which he stacked off to the side. At last, he pulled out a much larger tome and sat it on his lap. "Friends, I may not be of assistance in healing our injured, but I can provide this," Jethera told them pointing to the large tome, "This here is the tome 'The Divine Healer' written by angels and passed from through the heavens down to us mortals to learn from." Jethera placed his hands upon the book and smiled to his comrades.
"I don't think that I will be in need of any of the same items as you, Kifu, so, search away. If you do find any interesting materials that would benefit me, please, let me know and I will use them appropriately." Jethera told the Witch Doctor as he rumaged through his knapsacks. He pulled out a dark colored rock and gather brush from the surrounding areas and started to make a small fire for warmth and other needs. Jethera, then took a large lether-bound tome and opened it about halfway. He started to read from it turning pages upon their completion.
"Sorry Kifu, I can only walk so fast with so many tomes," Jethera responded to him. "Even though I hadn't helped with this battle, I can ensure you, comrades, that when I am put into battle, the results will be above standards. I'll show you Kifu, someday."
Jethera raised a hand to the villager that he had manipulated and waved him away. The villager turned and walked off.
Jethera walked on to the bloodied field sighing, "I always miss the battles." Jethera walked through the body covered field wincing at the slain villagers. Jethera rolled bodies over with his foot in search of tomes of scrolls for his usage, doubting any new material.
One body rolled over and it was another countless tome of the Sin War. "Bah! I've got the entire collection in my study," Jethera scoffed.
He noticed the congregation of his fellow mercenaries off to the side, though he could not see why through their dense numbers. As he strolled over to regroup with his friends, he noticed a russle in the bushes at the distance. He stood behind Warick watching the bushes as he tapped him on the shoulder, "Do you see that? In the bushes there?" As Jethera finished his speech another villager charged from the bushes armed with an ordinary lumber axe.
Jethera's palms glowed as he conjured a spell to retaliate the charging villager. He shot a yellow bolt of energy from his hands and the villager stopped in his tracks, lowered his weapon and spoke, "Hello there, I have a proposition for you. Care to embark on it?"
Jethera turned to the group, "Don't worry about him. He's just another friendly now."
