The only kind I really prefer is the co-op kind where you and a friend just go against a tough computer opponent. But going against a human makes me sweat nervously. It's not like in Halo where you just kill each other, respawn and kill each other again. It feels like there's more at stake in RTS game and just simple mistakes can turn the whole game against you. I could maybe give pvp another chance, but it would have to be with people I'm at least acquainted with, say, you guys.
I can agree with you somewhat here. During beta I almost exclusively played co-op with some friends, it's much more fun when you play it with someone you know. And losing not really that bad, especially when it mostly happens to rushes and is over in 10 minutes anyway
3) Overall RTS games lack any long term investment value. I do believe SC2 is introducing some new game mechanics to change some of this. But when you just play a map, kill everything, and then it's over, what do you do next?
It's always been one of my largest gripes with RTS games as well, but SC2 is just fun. I like playing a game, trying out new openings figuring out how to evolve my gameplay. It's a game where the progress isn't archived in in-game material, but in game knowledge.
And I'm not an exceptional player, we played gold so I'm in the middle segment of the population. That's the great part: you can play with people who suck just as much as yourself
Depending on what race you play will determine how much micro you need. If you play Protoss your looking at almost the same micro required of wc3 if you want to win.
That's just not true. WC3 raped me so hard when it came to spell micro in battles.
For competitive play sure in SC2, but in around 70 games I rarely built High Templars, because I don't want to use storm. Of course I play co-op with another race, so that gives us a little more leeway in terms of how to counter unit compositions. But the game will put you in an approrpaite level, and with the millions who will be playing this after release, there should be plenty of bronze-level players around depending on how seriously one wants to play.
Well yeah I'll try it too. In that I will try Starcraft 2. I wanna do the campaign at first though. Oh, can you actually play campaign in multiplayer? That would be something.

But you understand what my problem with it is, right? In the first Starcraft as you played the campaign you gradually gained access to new units. It was a fun way to play as the game became more strategically complex with each mission. But when you play multiplayer, or just against the computer in a skirmish game you can by default build every possible unit. I guess what I'm saying is once I play a multiplayer game or skirmish game, I'll see all the units the game has to offer instead of being gradually exposed to them as I experience the campaign. And I'm actually surprised no one seems to care about that.
I thought the same when I played SC1. Of course, at the time I neither had the patience or the skill to actually complete the damn campaigns, so I ended up playing skirming anyway. Which I lost (I always thought the AI was good in SC1, but it turns out they just do one rush. Survive that, and the computer just breaks down and doesn't do anything threatening.)
But it's not going to be the same in SC2. Not entirely at least. Lots of units and abilities that were cut from the multiplayer part of the game that might be included in the campaign. Units like the Firebat, Purifier, and larger queens. The battlecruiser also had a different special ability at one point that could be gotten instead of Yamato Cannon, which has also been removed. And with some 30 or whatever that the campaign will span, I think there will be some campaign-specific units in there as well.

Rts's just dont work for me, I like mmorpg's and rpg's because I feel like I get rewards for play time, in the form of items and levels. In warcraft 3 I always felt like I was starting from scratch every night I played.
But u can collectz new avatats and achievments n stuff!
Seriously. I like getting my win rate up so I can get that High Templar etc. That's a sort of progress, though it probably doesn't compare to the feeling of an RPG.

I thought this first release we'd only be able to play as Terrans. Or what that only for the campaign. It seems weird to me to play the other races before playing their campaigns first. I always liked having the different units introduced to me as I played along the campaign.
So that's Terran for Siaynoq then.
But yes, the campaign is terran only upon release. Multiplayer has all three races, otherwise it would have been a pretty one-sided experience to play online

I hate region locking.

It would indeed. I don't think we can though.
