It's not free to play. The unlimited trail is nothing at all, you can't play past level 20. Some people will find it fun, for a while, but they are just stuck with such a little part of the content.
Another thing that's interesting is that all Vanilla WoW Accounts are now autamatically upgraded to BC and some veteran players got a free Vanilla WoW CD key.
And usually huge patches like 4.2 tend to bring players back to WoW... that's the case with me too.
Ultimately though the problem is that Blizzard has not been able to think outside the box enough to invent new and compelling *kinds* of content, and their players are increasingly unimpressed with the same cycle of leveling/raiding
Actually that is sooo wrong. Cata has so much new mechanics even in 5-man heroics and the raid heroics are a totally different game...
In the end people compain no matter what. A big chunk of the fan base wanted a return to the roots (Vanilla) and were very nostalgic about old raids and dungeons, well we got them and now they QQ about it (I even remember the time when people said we were killing nobodies, not actual villains from past games, and when we got to kill someone significant a new wave of nerd rage emerged). Truth is that actually more people have started playing WoW post-Vanilla and didn't experience those raids/dungeons as part of the end game and those people got to see that content as a level 85 experience.
